It is entirely possible that Apple can allocate memory from the flash storage as additional ram when needed. This may be possible with IOS 8. It could allow energy conservation when not using much ram and additional ram when needed.

No version of iOS supports extending virtual memory to flash memory. If the OS runs out, it will kill apps instead.

Raise your hand if the RAM size is what you were waiting for to decide whether to get an iPhone 6/6+ vs an Android phone...

...anyone?

At this time I have a beautiful but hateful Galaxy and mine has 2 gb or ram and a 4 core processor and it crash every day at least once. It shuts itself down and I hate this. My beautiful iPad with 1 gb of ram has never failed not even froze and it doesn't shut itself down aaaannnd the battery life is excellent not like my phone that its so hungry that I have to charge sometimes twice in a day and its on standby. So I guess 1gb for a good phone is more than Okay I don't see the bad thing here.

the main reason I am going back to apple, my galaxy crashes all the time and reboots it self all the time, I will miss some things about android but I will much

They don't run iOS though.

you arent really thinking of the future when buying a 700-900€ device are you?

remember when 512mb was enough on iOS? now it cant even run iOS7.

its just a principal that i wont buy a 800€ device in 2014 when they could have easily added another GB for a few bucks to make it "future" proof just as i wouldnt have bought a rMBP if it had only 4GB of ram instead of 8

I don't see the big deal...I've never had a problem with the amount of RAM on my iPhone 5 and I multitask.

Sure, Apple could of ponied up and increased the RAM to 1gb and the minimum memory to 32gb, it's not that big of a deal.

Are you saying you don't have any LowMemory logs in the list at:

Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostics & Usage Data

?

I don't know why anyone finds this surprising if true. Apple will ride out minimum specs possible and squeeze out every bit of performance before upgrading to the next thing, per usual.

Disappointing, but I won't get worked up about it. The iPhone runs well. It's the iPad where more memory is badly needed. I think people tend to use them more intensity than iPhones.

Why does this matter? Apple doesn't even advertise this spec for the phone. All it serves is spec junkies who like to smile at spec sheets regardless of real world benefit or performance. iOS on the latest model iPhone is as good as it gets on mobile for stability, fit, and finish. Don't need to be able to tell my friends my phone has 2GB of RAM.

Apple rarely competes on specs. They compete on design, polish, and "feel" for the user. It's the reason why no Android manufacturer can match the awe around iPhone launches. All they can do is pump out product after product throughout the year at times when Apple is quiet and hope something sticks. They have no true brand loyalty or brand presence. Bigger iPhone is the nail in the coffin for Android handset popularity. 1GB of RAM or not.

Here's an idea. Stop worrying about making it unnecessarily thin and put a larger battery and more ram in it. Problem solved.

I actually rarely do. In fact, I have more crash reports then low memory. Most of the crashes are 3rd party apps too. Rarely an stock app. Makes me wonder the apps crashing is due to bad programming by the developers.

Furthermore, I don't have this infamous safari tab reload on my iPad Mini, Original, with 512MB ram. Unless I'm viewing a webpage with a lot of content, it doesn't reload or need to.

Lol strokes 5S knowing i made the right decision not going for either the 6 or 6 Plus this year.:D

I feel come end of this week once benchmarks and reviews are out a few people that bought the 6 Plus thinking it was going to be better, are going to be really disappointed.

Looks like Apple saving all the goodies for the 6S and 6S plus, like open NFC and 2GB of ram & maybe a quad core A9.

The amount of RAM has little to no impact on battery life.

THIS!

RAM uses so little power compared to the display and the CPU/GPU that more RAM would not have any impact. Where RAM does have an impact is in stand-by time (everything else powers down, but the RAM continues to draw power). However, for a phone that needs to be charged every night, stand-by time is mostly irrelevant.

That being said, I personally don't have a huge problem with only 1 Gig of RAM on my 5S. The only time it really seems to impact me is in Safari where I *HATE* the fact that I usually can't have two tabs in memory at once.

Really Safari ... do you need 500mb per open tab? I wouldn't care about extra memory if Apple could at least keep a couple of Safari tabs in memory at once. Or maybe even figure a way to page the tabs to disk as needed. Or something!

<end rant>

For the nay-sayers and haters...

You guys forget that Apple created a freaking awesome OS on 128K (!!!) FOR A COMPUTER! What makes you think that Apple will drop the ball this far out?

The benchmarks won't show anything wrong because of the RAM. It is the real world usage that will show problems (especially Safari and its bloody reloading tabs).
