ugh same here ordered on 9/12 for my 64GB gold and it's still on backorder 10/2-10/13. I actually found it at 3 different apple stores in my area over the weekend when checking apple's online status however; at&t won't let me cancel. only orders I see shipping for plus have been mostly premier accounts.
Don't take "you can't cancel now" for an answer! I was in your shoes (128, gold, 6+, stuck on 10/2-13, 877-backordered). I found LOTS of 6+'s in Apple stores in my area (NY) and called AT&T. The rep started to say I couldn't cancel. I cut the guy off and told him not to lie to me, that I *knew* I could cancel because I've seen scads of people doing it in forums.
And poof, inside of a minute he said 'ok you're all set, cancelled.' I asked him how long it'd be for my upgrade eligibility to kick back in and he said immediately. I checked online while on the phone and he was right. Boom.
Drove to the nearest Apple store, waited about an hour (shocked that there were still so many scalpers doing laps on the line) and got precisely the phone I wanted.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you all check local Apple phone stock. It's easy to do - go to store.apple.com, click Buy for the iPhone you want, configure with color, memory and carrier, then all the way at the bottom there'll be a link to check local stock for pickup. Enter your zip and voila.
(BTW the reason I had to wait on line at the store and purchase it there is because Apple's website STILL won't let me do AT&T Next online. If you're doing a new 2-year contract, or perhaps dealing with a different carrier, then you should be able to purchase it online for pickup, which then means you don't have to wait on line when you get to the store).
Enough out of me. Got my 6+ on Wednesday and couldn't be happier.
