Apple: Art of the Upsell

I remember long ago when the 8GB iPod Touch was $229

But for only $299 you could get the 32GB version.

$70 more for 4 TIMES the storage? Uh yeah...

And here we are again with the iPhone: an extra $100 gets you 4 times the storage. I know which one I'd pick...

I get the marketing, as slimy as it is. What I don't get is why anyone would buy an $800 phone with 16GB when you could get a 64GB for $100 more. The explanation is that they don't "need" the space. Well, if you ever start actually using the features of the phone 16GB fills up really quickly and at that point, you can't just upgrade. Even if you never use the space, if you want to give it to someone else or sell it, you aren't very likely to find someone who only needs 16GB. Hey if it was half the price of the 64, I could understand. Hell, if you are on AT&T Next or something similar, we are talking about two fewer Starbucks coffees per month. To me that is just penny wise/pound foolish.

Why is there a hatred against 16GB version?

I'm planning to get a 16GB one;

- I'm streaming music over Spotify.
- Not playing any games, mostly work related / communication apps.
- I watch stuff, streaming..
- I take a moderate amount of photos and videos, but iCloud Photo Library is here for that, right?

My 16GB 5S has 6.5GB of free space right now.. Never needed much. Why would I get a 64GB model?

Wait until iOS 9 comes out and you don't have enough free space to do an OTA update. Not everyone uses iTunes.

Phil Schiller's middle name is upsell. :D

Went to a Verizon store yesterday. I overheard from a salesman who said to another customer they had only one iPhone 6 left, but about 6-7 Plus units in stock. The customer of course went for the remaining base model. Demands seems to be all over the place.

Hope everyone who has been waiting for so long will finally get their 6 Plus soon.

I agree with the consensus from most folks that the 16gb is now impractical for purchase. I always have at least 3-4 movies on my phone now and with the size of iTunes HD that makes a 16gb capacity moot.

I saw a coworker's Gold Plus and am sorry I did not wait to get one. I am reminded when a new Apple product arrives to wait a 3 months after launch to simply pick one up. Now if I can just stick to that, great. Will try to ignore iPhone rumors until I am ready to upgrade again in a couple of years.

Ordered through At&t I have no other choice unless I buy the phone out right, I'm upgrading my 5s that was on a NEXT plan to the 6 plus on a NEXT plan and no one honors this but At&t 9/19 128gb Sg 6+ 11/9-11/27 still no phone!

AT&T's online Premier system being screwed up. The Premier Online Store didn't have the iPhones in it until I yelled at customer service (for several weeks.) There were several tickets opened and multiple calls and online chats placed before they wised up to the problem, fixed it, and finally resolved the issue of letting me order the phone. Pre-ordering wasn't an option until a month after the phone had already been out. :p

Oh that sucks. Yeah, it's terrible when the carrier's issues prevent the customer from making a legitimate purchase. Well you'll appreciate it much more when you finally receive it. :)

They should have dropped the 16 gig version and kept the 32 gig! It made no sense what so ever to drop the 32 gig! Has anyone heard of the reason for them doing this? They would have sold the heck out of the 32 gig...just saying.

It has zero sense for apple (happy customers don't count) - they are getting much more revenue now, with 32 gig base model many current 64 gig customers would pay less - who would want it (customers don't count again here)?

Shameless plug for my site that has a list of all the current ship times

Not sure where your site is scraping its data from, but I ordered by Space Grey 6+ 128GB from an AT&T store on 9/28 and it still today shows as "backordered"....

If they are quoting 3 to 4 weeks? They flat out lie.

Every other report by this website is contradicting of each other in regards to iPhone 6 plus demand

Just because the 6 outsells plus 3:1 or whatever BS number they come up with, that doesn't equal demand when it's still very hard to get a 6 plus and people just settle with the 6

Ha. So have we. Premier is AT&T's business division. We're a Houston company that's been with them since 1987. I was just curious about whether or not you were a Premier customer because troves of them got royally screwed in that same exact manner. I haven't been cancelled (yet) but at this point, nothing would surprise me. I was trying to upgrade my line because I had the 2 year upgrade available. However, Premier failed to put the iPhone 6 in the online store for my account and I wasn't able to actually complete the transaction until 10/22. When I discovered the ship date of 12/2-12/11, I complained to high heaven to the "support" team and you wouldn't believe what they tried to offer me... A FREE iPHONE 6 PLUS CASE.

Lucky you. I have not been able to order yet (internal issues) but then my company tells me after order its on backorder indefinitely. This thing is also my pager and on my 5 the battery starts to die. Wondering I should just wait for 6s at the moment. That will be out before I get the 6...

And since does demand = settle?. The wait is not that long, look of you ordered a plus as launch and really wanted one, you would have it.

I call BS on the settle theory cause if you really wanted one, three weeks is not that long. And people who really wanted one would have ordered one at launch and all those have been delivered a long time ago.

I do not know a single person who gave up waiting and settled for a plus, everyone i meet confirms they are happy they choose the 6 over the plus.

You must hang with rich people who can throw that much money at a device.... But really wanted another one . In the apple world, 3 weeks wait time for a new device is the norm

Something I don't get: why did people bother to order iPhone from the carriers? I've been with ATT for years and I never once ordered the phone through ATT but Apple.com. Go straight to the source. It's easy to cancel, change or even return the phone. I order 2 iPhone 6+ and both of them were shipped within 2-3 weeks in Oct.

----------

T-Mobile's 0% financing over 24 months.

I ordered all my iPhone through Apple. I have ATT Next and it's 24-month financing too. What's your point?

I agree. People whine too much just for waiting for 3 weeks like a 3 year-old kid. I ordered my first gold iPhone 6+ on Sep 12, shipped on Sep 26. My wife didn't like its size, so I used it until Oct 16 and returned it at Apple store for iPhone 6. At the same time, I order my Grey 6+ on Oct 3 and it's shipped on Oct 24. I just don't get why people cannot wait for 3 weeks.

Something I don't get: why did people bother to order iPhone from the carriers?

I ordered a 64 GB Space Gray 6 Plus directly from Verizon on 9/27. Stock showed as backordered until 11/7, but it shipped 10/28. I would have bought from Apple, but Verizon was offering a $200 gift card as trade-in credit for my iPhone 4S if I ordered before the end of September. Trading my old phone to Apple or any of the cash services (Gazelle, et al) would have netted roughly 60% of that. Getting rid of my old phone this way is far less hassle than having to deal with fleBay, Craigslist, or selling it privately. I will use the gift card toward my bill, which basically amounts to a free month of service for all the lines connected to my account.

A 128GB iPhone 6 Plus is selling for $8,099 on ebay:eek:
