This is why I went with the 6. My main concern was fitting it in my pocket comfortably, even though I take it out and put it on the passenger seat when driving, since it's hooked up to the aux port of my car.
But I could see this happening.

Now keeping a phone this large, that is made of aluminum, in your pocket for four hours one way, then hours at a wedding, and then four hours home, may not have been the best idea.
That's how may hours of slowly applied pressure?
I'm not saying that the OP is wrong in his consternation, but it's not strictly a design flaw in and of itself.

I wouldn't keep my MBP in my bag under a ton of heavy school textbooks either. Much less, say, a MBA.

And that's the draw back for thinness.

I posted 2 links to 2 samsung phones that broke in a pocket!!

Saw that. Never owned an S4. Had an S3 for a year. Carried in front and back pocket, sat (oh the horror) on it multiple times a day. No issues at all.

I have a feeling it wouldn't bend if we broke our normal habit of pointing the screen towards our thigh. If the screen (glass side) was pointing away from the thigh, then it wouldn't bend.

This is funny. People go on and praise the iPhone for its aluminum build. But every launch we see it scratches, bends, scuffs etc. These things don't happen to the "cheap" plastic Samsung's I've owned. And then you people are recommending to put the phones in a plastic or leather case. A thousand dollar phone, bending like a soda can.

Maybe there comes a point when a device is too thin.

Good post.

The irony being that we all keep the screen facing in to protect it from bumping into things.

This could turn out to be true.

I don't handle my crappy plastic samsung note any differently than any phone I have ever owned. No problems in front or back pocket. Sitting on it, etc.

And more than likely a 6+ would not bend for you either. That said the people I've known with Notes have not generally carried them in their pants pocket.

To think that a device this much bigger and thinner than what people are used to won't require ANY change in handling is kind of astounding really.

Some arguments are getting ridiculous, like people saying stuff like "how can you leave your phone in your pocket while you drive/eat"... Its too stupid for words, just defending for defending apple sake...

Piece of advice: Switch on that thing that sits between your ears!

If that doesn't help, here is your god (steve jobs) pulling out and putting back the first gen iphone in his (jeans) pocket!

A (smart-)phone is designed to wear primarily in your pockets and should also be able to do so. While the new iphone 6+ might be a little uncomfortable to wear in your pockets because of its size, it should NOT bend/break!

I'm also someone that usually keeps the phone in my pocket... Even while I drive, because I have something that is called hands-free in my car... Also with upcoming devices like the Apple Watch, there is even less reason to take out your phone out of the pocket!

So for christ sake folks, stop trying so painfully defend Apple in this case, while its very obvious that this is a quality issue or a case of bad structural design!

Like I said before already if this would be happening to a Samsung phone (or any other brand), all the Apple defenders would be the first to tell us all, that Samsung is *****ty and this is the reason why we all should buy Apple!

Before anybody says that I'm an Apple hater, I use Apple products already for more then 10 years and my iphone6 is on order, but there needs to also be room to criticise the product if there is something seriously wrong or there is room for improvements.

Nobody is perfect, but trying to silence critic and being ignorant is not helping to strive perfection and last time I checked Apple is striving for these values!

In spite of my earlier post, I will agree that, at the end of the day, on the 6 plus, yes, the aluminum is probably too thin, especially with area of the phone itself.

If this does to turn into a widespread issue, it was poorly thought design at the least.

2010 - Antennagate - "You are holding it wrong™"
2014 - Bendgate - "You are pocketing it wrong™"
2018 - ?

I preordered the 6+ which will make it my first iPhone (long time android user). Threads like this and the ones about the screen cracking so easily are making me second guess my decision.

The people who are actually defending the fact that the 6+ bends easily by saying people shouldn't put it in their pockets is laughable and does not help convince someone like me that I should not cancel my preorder. My pocket is my primary place where I keep my phone and I usually only take it out of my pocket to use it or charge it. Not being able to keep it in my pocket most the time would be an instant deal breaker.

When I started reading this thread I was laughing at people saying you can't carry it in your pocket. But as the thread progressed its starting to look like you people are serious......where the hell do you expect us to to carry a 6" freakin phone? I'm not wearing a fanny pack or carrying a purse. I bought both an apple leather case and a cheap hard plastic clear case from Amazon. Might return the leather case for the better protection of the hard plastic case so this doesn't happen to me......all my jeans are pants are super loose but I'm still worried now.

Seriously?
Use some common sense people. It's a large, thin piece of aluminum. It will bend when enough force is applied. That's not a "defect", that is simple science. Apple doesn't have some magical way of making things indestructible. These things are too big to go in your pocket while sitting down.

Was the iPhone 5 too big to be put in a pocket when a person sat down? There were various threads about this issue 2 years ago for the same problem

What size dude?

Just because steve jobs showed you on a video (a much Smaller and thicker phone) it is designed for a pocket?

and you want us to "Switch on that thing that sits between your ears"

I had some of the earliest smart phones going back to windows phone's, ect.. and I never ever put a smart phone in my pocket most of the time, yes I do sometimes with dress pants, but never jeans, and I posted 2 links to 2 samsung phones that broke in pockets.

Also this is only ONE case so far, and we don't know if the OP bumped into something (very very likely) but as someone else stated

"So while it may technically fit in your pocket, I'd say you do so at your own risk."

on one of the links samsung refused to support it also. So what's your opinion on samsung?

Well add at least one UK phone to the bendy-gate list, pretty much the same situation, not been in my pocket that much at all and is now slightly bent :( . Going to try taking it back this week when I get a chance, we will see what happens.

Apple should really get over their aluminium fetish

I second that.

I will never understand why a material that is cheap enough to be used in the production of millions of soda cans every hour, every day, year round all over the world, is considered as being premium. It is in fact a very cheap type of material. It looks nice and shiny though, that is probably the key.

Modern polycarbonate and carbon variations are not only better suited to this type of use , but also protects the devices better since there is a certain amount of flex in them that at least absorbs the shock a bit if you drop it. And even more important: You can add texture to the surface so you don't have to add a casing to keep the phone from slipping out of your hands.

I am really surprised at this bending-issue - none of the phones I have had (including some large ones) have had that happening to them. And I always keep them in my right front pocket.

this is not a phone you are used to, it is a phablet.

I knew at the announcement this would happen, lots of people scrambling to get the 6+ when everyone that I knew made fun of my note 2 and HTC one MAX for the size, then apple comes out with one and BAM "I gotta have one" from all over, not knowing what they are getting into.

But we don't know if the OP accidentally bumped something or ? So this thread could just be biased on one post!

I prefer stainless steel myself, and don't mind the added weight. In fact heavier phones feel better.

Three or four people have posted in this same thread that their phones are bent too.

If that is the case
1. the 6 plus is not for pocket use
2. return and get a 6 not a plus

I don't see any other resolution, Maybe a good case maybe?

BUT Samsung phones also did this s3 and S4 that I posted from a quick search so this is not nothing new but maybe new to apple products now.
