Here we go again. People moaning about apple making a bigger screen phone. It's getting old now. Every phone maker has increased their phone size for a reason and not just a gimmick. Consumers want a bigger screen because their mobile phones are now their main device for web browsing, checking emails and watching cat videos. Those things are much easier on a bigger screen.

4.7 or 5.0 is an excellent size to do all of those things. Screen size is a huge reason why people are staying away from apple. The current iphone feels and looks like a toy or a phone for toddlers.

I can't wait for a bump in iphone size. Kinda wish they were releasing before September though.

Apple doesn't need the biggest screen on the market because they'll make sure it's the BEST screen on the market. If they want to really win against Samsung and beat the Note 3?.

You're wrongly assuming the note 3 with awful amoled screens are the best on the market..... Wrong.. imagine the current iPhone screen.. IPS LCD with better colour reproduction, more pixels.. sharper. Better viewing angles... Bigger. I give you the HTC ONE ... That's the boy to compare with..

Comments like this drive crazy. A few years ago people were claiming Apple would NEVER release a phone with a screen larger than 3.5" ... and then reality set in, and market demand spoke. People want larger phones, and limiting consumer option doesn't make any sense. How the hell would a larger screen ruin the Apple experience? There isn't one logical answer to that question. People have different hand sizes, eye issues. Some business people would welcome the larger screen for on-the-go work but don't have the space to carry a second large device (iPad Mini). A large screen phone is a great "all-in-one" device.

A phone larger than 4.7" will come, if it's not this launch, then next one. Apple seems to lag behind literally every other phone maker in screen size (and most other features these days) so worst case we'll have a screen larger than 4.7" by 2016.

There are about 2 design constraints on something like a phone, and one important consideration.

The constraints are that the thing has to be both pocketable and palmable.

The design consideration its that the thing should have an aspect ratio that makes it user friendly in both portrait and landscape

Apple could increase the area of its phone's surface (the nominal screensize) while satisfying the pockeablitiy and palmability constraints, but would need an aspect ratio of 5:2 or higher, that would look fine in landscape, to be completely useless in portrait, unless it were letterboxed back to around 1:2, which would problably give an efective screen size of around 4 in anyways.

I'm due to upgrade this year BUT if the 6 doesn't come with a 4" screen, I'll be buying a 5s prior to the 6 available date.

I will pay more for a smaller screen.

3.5 inch display isn't enough for the last 7 years?

What is wrong with you and all the others that rage against bigger displays? Go back to a flip out cell phone from the early 2000's. So glad those are almost extinct.

Apple is the only one I know that will deliver a product that will not sit in your pocket like a brick while maintaing a larger display.

The iPhone has been in need of a larger display since it launched. What are you supposed to do with tiny Safari web browser that is almost unusable?

That's what I had to deal with for the longest time with the 3G, and 4 model. Screw that.

You should speak for yourself. Not everyone feels they need to keep a super large cell phone to play Angry Birds or watch YouTube. I think choice is the key. Apple should offer multiple sizes with the same tech specs for the most part. That would shut everyone up and we won't have tweeners every year online raging for Apple to launch and even larger phone.

It's because they can't make a phone as powerful and feature rich as the iPhone. It's why Samsung started making their phones bigger. They need the space for the battery and other components because they don't have the raw hardware talent that Apple does. They just happen to stumble upon a shift in consumer perception in which they think they are getting more for their money if it's bigger. I'll take smaller anyday.

You didn't quote enough of my post. I said that Apple doesn't have to have the biggest screen on the market, they will definitely try to have the best, ala retina display, most ppi, etc. I didn't say the note 3 had the best screen, I said if Apple wants to beat the Note 3, throw in a stylus and an easy to use stylus interface like Samsung has done in all of their S-Pen enabled devices.

Please. Read carefully before criticizing. I'm glad you like your HTC one. It's a sweet rig. Too big for me to not have a stylus. Believe it or not I don't really want another phablet without one.

4.7" won't be big enough to lure people back from Android - but I'm sure Apple's going to pull another one of those half-a***d stunts and go with a screen that's STILL too small for another 2 years.

No way in h*** is there going to be a 5.5" version. Why make many people happy if you can somehow turn this into the next big "innovation" in two years?

Actually the 3GS base model was already 16GB at launch. The 8GB version was introduced later on. Makes it even more pathetic.

i feel like I've seen this article 2 or 3 times before.

There hasn't been much in the way of substantive announcements or leaks recently. I'm getting tired of these "analyst reports" though, as it's my experience that analysts often make laughably poor predictions.

It's possible. They know they get hit in the marketplace on screen size now, so they make some kind of 450+ PPI new "standard" resolution in the 4.7 inch phone (that requires reworking apps) and a 5.5 inch version in the same resolution (but with lower PPI obviously, think high 300's) that can use the same reworked apps with no modification. Then Apple says "choose which one you want."

They get hit by whom, exactly? How many units does Apple forgo selling due to phablets? I would say a meaningless number. Don't forget that the market for phablets has been proving itself consistently small, and no number of large phones has been able to change that.

If by "getting hit" you mean that lots of competitors try to compete with Apple by putting several large models on the market, that is irrelevant, since the market is not responding by actually BUYING these devices.

We have one thing in common... Neither of us has a clue what you're talking about.
