There are currently only two different sizes a developer designs for on the iPhone: 480x320, and 568x320. (The changes with the latter can be handled with AutoLayout.) The OS handles everything else.**** no! The designs would just go screwy. So you want to draw something with a hairline, do you use 1 pixel? 2? or make it the full fat 3? If you design stuff for 3x Retina, then scale to 2x retina, the edges will all go blurry. So then designers have to build everything at 6x so they have a common divisor. As if PSDs aren't big enough already... No way is that going to happen.
I would just suggest that if they go for a larger screen, they'll just scale up the pixels. Apple will still say Retina because you will be using the device further away from your eyes.
EDIT: Ah may have misunderstood what you were saying. Nevertheless I don't think working at 6x will be such an issue?
