Have you really looked at an iPad Mini? Even a note 3 is nowhere even approaching the size of an iPad Mini, so I think you're getting too worked up about it.

/phone nerd

Yes, I did have a look at iPad mini.

Here is a one of the phones I meant. The dimensions are getting close to mini.

So, you may think its fine to have a phone this size to use as a phone and thats ok. I just said that for me its crazy and that I don't understand the race for huge screens in the phone market. The phone above will not fit in many pockets in your wardrobe so that was one of many issues I have with it.
If I use my "phone" mainly for browsing etc, then why would i want a phone and not a tablet? Small and compact phone for daily stuff and ipad mini in my briefcase for browsing. Or you really fit that phone in your jeans pocket?

I can see that this issue is dividing people into two categories. Those who don't like the idea of getting bigger and those who are crazy about it and want as big as they can get. I'm in first you are in second. I don't understand second category, you do. Well, lets hope that Apple will give us the option to decide.

I hope 4,5" at 720x1280 so the same 326ppi and screen area expanded. With this size and smaller bezels they can make a slightly larger phone with a respectable screen size that can raplace entirely 4" iphones. Pixel density would be the same and extra battery can be used for more battery life. I prefer 2 hours of battery than a non visible 100ppi increase.
Another way (if they go to 4,8") is to expand screen area to 720p, display at @3x retina 1080p. So a little bigger elements, a little more pixel density and a little more screen real estate!

while agree the phone you linked is too big, this has nothing to do with a rumored 4.8" iPhone. 4.8" isn't coming close to a phablet sized phone like the xperia or the Samsung Galaxy Mega. Compare this Sony to a Moto X (4.7" screen)(see link below)... huge difference in size. the Moto X is easily pocketable, the Xperia? not so much.

for everyone else reading... 4.8" does not equal "OMG that thing is a phablet, how will you fit that in your pants pocket!!!!111eleven". Go to your local cell phone store and hold onto a Moto X. You'll see that not only will it fit in any pants pocket, but that it is quite comfortable to hold and not the huge monstrosity that you are making it out to be.

At the end of the day, it just comes down to personal preference. Some people love having the Galaxy Note sized phones (and bigger) and some prefer to stay at the iPhone 4S size and quite a bit of people (it seems) wants an iPhone somewhere in between.

EDIT: here's that link from above.

They better start production in the summer, because they'll sell 70-90 million in the first quarter. There are tens of millions waiting for a large-screen iPhone.

To be honest even the galaxy Note 3 fits into most jeans, the problem comes when you sit down and it shows (atleast it did when i tried it out with one of my buddies phone)..Haven't tried it out with formal trousers and chinos where i feel it may show a bit more. 4.8 inches is not going to be significantly bigger than your current iphone and i dont think the iP6 would be a iPhone 5 minus the bezel. I think it would be a clean sheet design by Jony Ive and co and would be much different, slimmer and more optimized for the screen size. The thickness of the phone plays a large role in my opinion on the FELL IN THE POCKET and oen can easily try that out by using a regular iphone 5 and then trying out an Iphone 5 with a protective case on (I use a Slim Armor)...

You do not understand anything at all if you think there are just two kinds of people, those who want a 4 inch screen and those who want a 6.7 inch screen. And besides, in the real world, most people are comfortable with around a ~5 inch screen using current technology (that is, narrower bezels than Apple uses on the iPhone). The fanboys who proclaim 4" as the best are only doing that because it's all they can get right now. We see this every time Apple offers another form factor (see also iPad Mini). I almost feel bad for the people who are so tightly constrained in their box that they can't see outside it. There's an interesting world out there, you know ;).

Agreed, the Note 3 is pocketable but it pushes the boundaries a little and not everyone would be comfortable with it.

On the flip side, the iPhone is so small that it won't stay upright in my pocket, it falls down sideways and then bulges out and becomes uncomfortable. Just slightly larger actually fits better because it fills just enough more space to stabilize.

You know what, looking at that phone I think that would actually still work. It looks small enough to be in a pocket and I'm sure that Apple will make it even better. So that one would be ok for me too I guess. :))
The only issue I had before was that the rumours talked about even bigger sizes than this one so that is mainly what I referred to. :)
But you are right, that size could work :)

Just think of all the resources Apple put into that 5C nonsense when it could have gone to make a better 5S.

But for me personally, 128GB model or I'm done.

Actually I didn't talk about sizes. I said two types of people. 1) those that prefer small factor (that means reasonable screen size for them) and 2) those that want bigger factor (big screen)

That's what I meant

thanks for being open minded about it ;) I think the big issue with this story/thread is that the mockup in the OP looks ridiculously large. People see that, immediately think that 4.8" screen iphone = size of a Galaxy Mega... which just isn't true.

I do hope that Apple has multiple sizes though, more choice is good for me... maybe a 4" and 4.8"... or 4.3" and 5"... not sure, but I don't really want it to be 5" or bigger... I guess we'll see!

Sure but as I said - great make 2 sizes of iPhone 6 but the specs need to be the same... apart form battery life.

Don't go down the S4 mini route - which was such a con. Utterly different to an s4

I totally agree. Not everyone wants a larger phone. I can understand that.

The specs do need to be identical. We don't need either one being a dumbed down or 'C' version. Give them identical specs and let the market decide.

Choice is good :)

personally, I prefer the 5C. I had too many issue with the 5S and the 64-bit "issues" (touch ID respringing the phone 6 out of 10 times when I had "reduce motion" turned on for starters...). The 5C feels very nice in hand and I can actually use it naked without having "scuffgate" issues (my iPhone 5 was really bad with this!)

but yes, they need to up the storage... start with 32GB at the base and work up from there.

3.5" is a joke........Looks like a toy....... 4.8" to 5" is perfect.

I see people with those 5-inch things every day. They look ridiculous holding those things. And they are far too big and clunky to use comfortably...I've tried.

3 months ago, I switched from iPhone 5 to Moto X. The form factor of Moto X is perfect and I mean PERFECT for average size hands. As someone commented above, android just didn't do it for me either... switched back to iPhone 5 for iOS. I really miss the extra real estate and awesone form factor ofMoto X. I wish i6 comes close to that kinda form factor.

If you speak about Moto X, I'm with you.
If you speak about Samsung huge monsters .....

I had a Galaxy Nexus that had a 4.6' screen and that felt like a good sized screen. If this 4.8' screen rumor is true i think it'll be a good thing for Apple. I think people fear of a change. It's not like Apple's quality is going to fade away from a new iPhone design.

Bigger Really Is Better!

I was scared to leave Apple's familar tiny screen size when I jumped ship over to the WindowsPhone (wow what a better phone) but I got used to it very quickly and now after holding an iPhone 5s I can't believe how tiny it as an I can't understand how I used to type on it. Change is hard and difficult, but change is always for the better.

I don't see massive resources having been needed to get the 5c out of the door. What I see is apple re-use their historic practice of selling the last gen phone 100$ cheaper then the current phone but instead of doing the usual stuff they made the iPhone5 out of plastic, introduced color and made it cheaper to produce. Not only did this increase profit margins from the device compared to a alluminum unibody it also gave them something to MARKET to a consumer base, and it appears the 5C by itself did pretty well given that it ranked in the top 3 most popular handsets in the US.

I don't really see the 5c development taking anything away from the 5s effort.

No, they are not. They do not look ridiculous, they are not too big and they are not uncomfy. You see, the reason that you see them every day is that those are the phones that people want. They aren't being forced at gunpoint to buy those phones...

He specifically noted having smaller bezels so it could be used with one hand. And showed the thumb scrolling.

Larger bezels would make it easier to hold.

Uhh, no actually. The iPad mini can be held in one hand, because it is smaller, and perhaps most importantly, lighter.

..and people are idiots too. More isn't always better.
