iPhone 6+ with polarized sunglasses = junk

The iPhone 6's have a different polarizer just for this reason, to be better with most polarized sunglasses. See the details about the display on the website. My iPhone 6 Plus looks fine with my Maui Jim's and my 5s sucked.

I'd say this is a sample defect.

My iPhone 5 looked odd with my polarized lenses (discolored wavy lines), but my iPhone 6 looks completely normal with them. Stoked about that.

Yeah they improved the screen use with polarized lenses. I have 3 pairs of Maui's that work fine on my 6 Plus. The screen temp gets a little warmer when in portrait mode but is clear.

I just tried two of my polarized Oakleys and the screen looks normal, where did you get your glasses from?

Mine looked exactly like that when I had one of the wet install screen protectors on it. I switched to a glass protector and now it looks normal again.

Oh boy....

Well, this isn't as "no big deal" as you might think.
But, so far with my 6 it's not been a real problem.

I had LASIK back in December. It's great but one of the side effects you can experience is that bright sunlight seems that might brighter (it makes stargazing amazing, I can see night sky stuff I only dreamed of before).

So, in the car I wear sunglasses.

I have a set of Bolle cycling glasses with 4 sets of interchangeable polarized lenses and it once had an Rx insert (no longer needed!)
I have a set of Foster Grant ironman polarized sunglasses (for driving and cycling)
And I have a set of no-branded sunglasses the laser eye clinic gave me after the surgery.

So far I haven't had problems in the car BUT I tend to NOT try to use my phone while driving or in the car. If I have to do it I pull over and usually take the sunglasses off to interact with the phone since bright sunlight tends to wash out any LCD display of any device.

I'll pay closer attention to this tomorrow and take all 3 sets of glasses and see what I experience.

Tumi Zeiss and Persol polarized lenses here, no issues with either.

I have a hunch it has to do with the differences in polarizers and how the polarizers interact though, as my Tumi's don't have any issues with the factory Lexus tint but the Persol's do (spots/waves).

The Zeiss Tumi's are the only glasses I'll buy going forward anyway. Hella awesome

Is this thread for real? As if polarization is a new idea.

I think the problem is the wrinkles in the polarizer or whatever it is that has the wrinkles. That doesn't look normal.

I can understand not seeing it well, but why is it all bubbly and look like rolling hills. Its like I am seeing the defects or problems on the filter below the screen. iPhone 5 has no problems. :(

Yeah, that seems weird to me too. I would not expect that.

That's completely normal. I first noticed this 30 some years ago in the hatchback of my car while wearing polarized sunglasses. The ripples are a normal artifact. It just shocks me that not only would this be new to someone, but that they think they are somehow seeing a defect with their "x-ray" specs.

of course

Anyone else seen this with polarized sunglasses. I have Oakley biking glasses and thought my screen was broken when I had them on. Found out it only looks like this with the sunglasses on.

I am not very happy at all about this. Going to Apple store and check demo units. This along with buggy IOS 8 does not make a happy camper right now. Battery life and screen without sunglasses is what I am most impressed with.

Look at pictures. I took without sunglasses and everything is normal. Then I put sunglasses over camera and this is what I am seeing when wearing my Oakley polarized sunglasses.

This device is almost $1000. This is unacceptable to me. We'll see if its just my phone or what Apple wants to do about it.

It is how LCD works, through the polarization of light. Your shades or any external polarizers will screw it up. If different phones have different effects like wrinkles... I would blame the phone... Especially if the 5 appeared OK. Weird.

It's normal to see a moire or rainbow pattern due to the interference pattern between the polarization grids of the screen and the glasses. It's also normal to have the display become brighter / dimmer (to the point of being completely obscured) depending on the relative angle of rotation between the polarization filters in the glasses and the screen -- that's the point of the polarization and how the glasses filter out light and how the LCD controls brightness of a pixel.

The ripples or scrunching of the screen looks like an improperly applied sheet of film to me. I don't consider that normal.

If you can show me a physical explanation for how this effect could be considered normal that would help to change my opinion.

When wearing my oakley black iridium polarized lens my iPhone 6 screen looks good much better than 5s.

I fly planes. This is why you don't wear polarized sunglasses at the controls of a glass/lcd plane. It's normal the way the glass is layered.

Exchange your phone for sure. That is not right. I have 2 different pairs of polarized Oakley sunglasses, one prescription, and neither cause any issue like what is seen in your pictures. I can see the screens clearly.

Any screen you look at, depending on the angle, is going to wash out. That's how polarized sunglasses work. :p

Is this thread for real?
Could the OP understand how polarized lenses are working?

This forum amuses me every day a little more. I'm waiting for the thread "I'm blind and I can't see my iPhone 6 very well, shame on you Apple!".

Guys, look at his photos. It is not that the screen is just darkening. That should be expected at certain angles. His phone screen is showing some very strange irregular wavy lines which would indicate some abnormalities in the glass layers most likely. Not right.

Here is my 6+ with some polarized prescription Oakleys. As you can see, no funny distortion even at different angles.

That article is about the polarizer filter of the display. What the OP is seeing is the combined effect of two filters: the display's and the sunglasses'.
You can't blame Apple on this issue.

I have polarized oakleys too. My first 5s and I saw the same weird lines wearing mine. Replaced my phone and no lines when wearing my glasses.

There are 6+ screens out there without this problem
So you replaced a perfectly working iPhone because of your sunglasses???
And Apple allowed that return?!?

True, it could be that his lenses themselves are not polarized correctly.

That looks defective. I can see my screen perfectly with polarized glasses

Your sunglasses aren't identical to his.

Polarized glasses and LCD screens don't get along. This is nothing new and it has exactly nothing to do with iPhones beyond the fact that iPhones have LCD screens. Don't like it? Don't wear polarized sun glasses.

----------

You can get polarized shades that are just as dark as non polarized ones. Personally I like polarization. Cuts down on glare and makes skies look more blue. But I take them off when I look at an LCD. Because they don't play nice with LCDs or other polarized things.

Exactly this.
Do you know what? I can't wear polarized sunglasses on my aircraft because under some tilt displays are just invisible. Do you want to sue Boeing for that?
Another ridiculous thread...
Now I can see Mr users checking iPhones with Oakley sunglasses and keep returning working units until they find the one compatible with their sunglasses.

----------

Wrong. The effect differs depending on how the two polarizations interact. If one has wider gaps between the lines for example or if one has less uniform polarization. There's really nothing unusual about what you're seeing here. LCDs and polarized lenses don't get along. Period. That's not a flaw with your phone.

At least someone seem to know what polarization is...
