Apple made it all confusing by insisting on keeping a number instead of just calling it the "new iPhone." The 4S name does not make since because the iPhone 4 referred to generation rather than features. It implies that the 5th generation phone is somehow still a 4th generation phone. There was never an iPhone 2 so the assumption shouldn't be that there MUST be an iPhone with a 5 in the name. The truth is that at this point both iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 would be confusing in their own ways. Apple, please just call it the 2012 iPhone.
You said 4 come after 5. After 4 came 4S. That was the 5th one. Now that that ship has sailed why would it be called iPhone 5? It doesn't add up. Wouldn't you agree that this next one will be different? I'm not saying its gonna be called iPhone 6 though thats more logical than 5. But I doubt it will be called iPhone 5 like everyone has already blindly accepted

That makes no sense. Basic math is 6 = 6
Regardless of which generation the iPhone is, I think going from iPhone 4S to iPhone 6 would be a hell of a lot more confusing to the consumer than going from iPhone 4S to iPhone 5.

I dont really understand why the 2nd iPhone was called iPhone 3G. By your too-good logic it should've been iPhone 2, 3GS was supposed to called iPhone 3.
Apple only do the name & right numbering with original iPhone (it was never called iPhone 2G by Apple, okay?) and iPhone 4.
But then again what's the matter with the numbers? I'd stick with iPhone 5 though if I were Apple. 4S basically is a spec bump, nothing major. Thus it's still iPhone 4 with Steroid. That's what 4S stands for me . Still nice though.

It's not about calling them by the order of their release. it's about the way Apple has named the iPhones in the past. They called the iPhone 4 because it was the 4th one obviously and it came after the 3GS. Now the 4S is out and if they're going to release it going by the past on not rumors they would call iPhone 6. Personally though, like I've said many times that the phone will be called something new. Most likely based on what feature they're going to want to use as the main selling point.

I don't buy the "iPhone 6 is confusing so that's why they'll call it iPhone 5." iPhone 5 is confusing as well making everyone think it's the 5th iphone therefore not as advanced as it should be.
Everyone was crying because they didn't get the iphone 5. Well you did get the iphone 5 but it was called iPhone 4S. So accept it and move on. A better iphone will come out soon. And no it won't be called iPhone 5
I agree. We don't know. That's the thing thats bugging me is that everuone is so set on it being called iPhone 5. It's definitely not worth fighting over that's for sure

The iPhone 5 does not exist. It was a name derived from rumors leading up to the iPhone 4S release to indicate a redesign of the fifth generation iPhone.
Since there was no redesign when the new iPhone was released last October the 'iPhone 5' became the iPhone 4S.
Remember the days before iPhone 4 where we would refer to the fourth generation iPhone as 'iPhone 4G' because people believed that 'G' stood for 'generation'?
This is like that concept. The iPhone 6 refers to the 6th generation iPhone.
Personally I believe that it would neither be iPhone 5 or 6 as it would be too cliche for Apple to use it.
'iPhone LTE' seems to be the only plausible name as the previous 3G iPhone was named 'iPhone 3G' and with LTE technology rapidly developing, I see Apple integrating it into their future phones.

What in apples history actually tells you they name phones based on the amount of iphones released ? Im really struggling to work it out..
You say the logic behind calling the iphone 4 is because it was the fourth phone. Maybe, just maybe, it was purely because 4 came after 3 !!!!

If you read this thread better you would know that I'm not arguing over it being called iPhone 6. I'm just saying why everyone has blindly accepted the next iPhone to be called iPhone 5.
So far my conclusion is that everyone is upset over the 4S who were expecting an iPhone 5. When in reality the iPhone 4S is the 5 but people can't accept it. So they're still waiting for it when Apple is alreading moving on

I don't care what it's called. I'm simply looking for it to be better than the iPhone 4 and 4S models. It's time for Apple to focus and deliver a well built, high functioning, iPhone.

I would argue that both the 4 and 4s are well built and high functioning.... but maybe that's just me.
How about if they release the next phone and the next OS at the same time....IOS6 = iphone6.....
