So far my conclusion is that everyone is upset over the 4S who were expecting an iPhone 5. When in reality the iPhone 4S is the 5 but people can't accept it. So they're still waiting for it when Apple is alreading moving on

You do realize people don't give a toss about it being called an iphone 5. If you think people are upset and where waiting for an iphone 5 because of the name, you are being silly.

They wanted a redesigned iphone, which if there where to have been one instead of the iphone 4S, would have been called an iphone 5, because they wouldn't release a completely redesigned iphone and call it an iphone 4S.

Do you really believe that people aren't happy with the iphone 4S because its not called the iphone 5?

If you really believe people where upset because of the name, then you my friend, are being extremely short sighted.

I cant believe i even have to explain this ?...

Apple has decided not to celebrate New Year 2012, but instead, introduce a lesser version called 2011S.

oh no your gonna start the op off, next hel be saying i dont know why people are saying happy new year 2012 when its actually happy new year 100034328792837498723.. lol

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that the next iPhone is going to be called iPhone 5. This will be the 6th iPhone to be released. If anything it will be called iPhone 6. iPhone 4S is the 5th.

You ought to be kidding, because ANY normal person would expect the names pattern to go like this: 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7, 7s and so on. There's no logic at all in what you're saying.

Calling it the iPhone 6 would confuse people and make people think the missed a version of the iPhone.

By your logic should the original iPhone be called the iPhone 1? and the second generation (3GS) be called the iPhone 2?

Its either going to be the iPhone 5 or 4G.

The original iPhone didn't need anything after it as it was the first one and the 3G, 3GS, and 4S are irrelevant in a conversation in which it is being discussed whether the next iPhone will be iPhone 5 or 6. The only iPhone that had a single digit number after it went by the generation. Apple clearly had no problem going from the first iPhone to iPhone 3G. They won't have any problem going from iPhone 4S to iPhone 6. People who think the next iPhone will have a 5 after it need to think logically and look at Apple's name reasonings and previous steps. Going from 4S to 6 won't be any more confusing than going from the first iPhone to the iPhone 3G. If the next iPhone has a single digit number after it, it will be a 6.

seriously just stop it now.

That's because you haven't been paying attention. 6th iPhone != iPhone 6. Where's the iPhone 2? The iPhone 3?

How many times does this topic need to be rehashed? What different outcome are you expecting and why? Based on your word? If you have an inside source trump card that would be a different matter. Instead, you've just created yet another one of these threads using the same old argument from the prior threads.

That's the thing thats bugging me is that everuone
is so set on it being called iPhone 5.
Your counter argument is just as pointless. Why does it bother you anyway? The announcement of the next model will provide a definitive answer.

It's definitely not worth fighting over that's for sure
Then why start yet another pointless thread on this topic?

I'm just saying why everyone has blindly accepted the next iPhone to be called iPhone 5.
They're not blindly accepting it. It's the current release/naming scheme:

model "X"
model "Xs"
model "Y"
model "Ys"

The 3G was an anomaly.

I have it on good authority that starting with the next iPhone, they are going to be naming them in order from the periodic table of elements.

The next iPhone will be iPhone H, then iPhone He, then iPhone Li until we reach iPhone Uuo. After that iPhones will be obsolete.

IN order for the next one to be called a 5 that would suggest the 4s is the same generation as the 4. If that's the case then the 3GS would be the same generation as the 3G, in that case they're both second generation iPhones.
So, with that logic the iPhone 4 should have been called an iPhone 3.

This thread makes my head hurts.

First of all, the iPhone 4 was named iPhone 4 because it was the 4th gen iPhone. Go back to Jobs unveiling it. Jobs mentions it being the 4th gen iPhone after unveiling the name and the marketing after the unveiling also heavily referenced it being the 4th gen iPhone. If Apple names the next iPhone after its generation like they did with the 4, then it will be 6. But, who knows what Apple will call it. They could go back to naming it after the cell technology that is in it( iPhone LTE?)like they did with the iPhone 3G. We have no idea what Apple will do.

Second of all, all of you are obsessed with this, " iPhone 5" name because of the rumors this past summer. You are saying it will be called iPhone 5 because of the iPhone 5 name being hyped up. Could they call it the iPhone 5? Sure because it would mark a total redesign of the iPhone like the 4 represented a total redesign.

Stop arguing over what the next iPhone will be called. We have no idea what it will be called. As proven many times, RUMORS are often wrong and they were 100% wrong when it came to an, " iPhone 5" despite pictures of the 4S components leaking on the internet. So stop harping on this, " iPhone 5" name saying it will happen, etc because you don't know if the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5. Believing into these rumors sets you up for massive disappointment.

The only thing Apple has remained consistent on with its iPhone naming is the S name representing a speed bump of the iPhone's specs in the same design. Besides that S name, they haven't remained consistent to say there is a naming pattern here. Who knows if they will stick with numbers for the next iPhone. We don't know and history can't tell us anything.

Wow my head is really aching too. Doesn't 5 come after 4??????????????????

Even if they named it iPhone 8 people would still call it the iPhone 5. :D

I'd like to officially nominate this as the Dumbest Thread Ever!!

Lucky thing this has never been discussed before, otherwise it might indicate that a Search wasn't done.

And that would mean that this thread is totally redundant.

Redundant, as in the-designation-of the-next-iteration-of-the-iPhone-has-been-discussed-on-a-dozen-other-threads.

But, luckily, this has never been discussed before.

I am guessing you never watch reruns or sitcoms where the basic premise of the show is only slightly tweaked each week! :)

Come on. Let the kids have their fun. If you don't want to read more of the same, simply don't click on the link. It's not like the title was misleading.

Whatever the next iPhone is called it better have a bigger screen the tiny display is starting to drive me nuts after using 4.3 inch phones prior to 4s.

OP, I have thought this from the beginning. It is going to be the 6th iPhone running iOS 6. I'm almost positive it will not be called the iPhone 5, if anything It will be iPhone 4G or it could be iPhone LTE, assuming it gets the LTE chipset due at the end of Q2 or early Q3 for October launch.
