Aside from the bone head move by a now former Apple employee leaving the iPhone 4 at a bar, were there this many leaks of that phone? Was Apple better off having the phones made by Samsung? Is there a way for Apple to design AND build a working finished product in-house at HQ, announce it to the world early in the year and then have it sent to the manufacturer to be mass produced?

Samsung never made iPhones.

does anyone still prefer the 4" factor over the current 4.7?

I owe a 5s and my gf has a 6s and everytime she asks me to carry the phone for her in my pocket.. feels weird. While the 4" its a amazing one hand phone. Anyone agree?

Having a 5s has been just fine. I figure by the time the 7c (or whatever it's called), comes out, we will be at ios10 and that will probably call for me to update at that time. I was happy with my 4s, but when Apple had their trade up deal, all it cost me was tax to upgrade to the 5s.
I can't understand why so many thought the 5c was such a failure. I didn't necessarily care for the 'plastic, but the concept was OK
I think now Apple has revisited the idea and will improve and also keep some market share, where, as I and perhaps other, do not care for the larger phones,

I would buy a 6c. The c line is one of apples best products.

Cant tell if you're serious...
The 5c is by far the worst iphone (plastic build, screen pops out, batteries swell, incorrect time board failure)...
Next to the original 6 plus (Bends, Blurry camera, Flickering and flashing unresponsive displays...)

For God's sake, Apple, stop dumbing down the C line! Give me a top tier phone in a 4 inch form factor! Hopefully, the term "base storage" means there'll be other options. I can live without 3D Touch; I just need the fingerprint sensor for Apple Pay. Give me that, the same camera at the iPhone 6 and at least 32 gb of storage and you've got a sale.

It will not be 32gb I guarantee it...
If it happens (and it might not) it will be with the 7 in September.

Yep. While I don't have any issues operating the 6 one-handed, I still prefer the 5 form factor primarily because of better "pocketability" (and because it's less slippery). The 6 sometimes bothers me when carrying it in jeans pockets (and no, I don't wear "skinny jeans"). With the 5 you barely notice it's there. I don't watch videos or do a lot of browsing on my phone, so I don't really have a use for the bigger screen.

I'm not looking for a budget phone. What I'd like is a compact premium phone, i.e, something like a 5S with updated specs and Apple Pay. Looks like the 6c or whatever it's called might deliver that.

people, its just a compact phone. It aint no flagship, no cheap, just compact.
This time, C will probably stand for compact.
As a compact phone, it needs a relatively larger battery. it got it.
Cost-wise, it will not get 3D touch, Pencil sensors, or OIS.
That doesn't make it bad, its just another sort of phone.
Its perfect as companion phone, schoolchildren phone, phone for elderly, phone for youth and sports.
Its not for flashing off at company meetings, Starbucks or expensive restaurants.
Its a normal workhorse phone and it would be a great addition.

Yes there are. My 18 year old daughter is 5'1 with tiny hands. She had a 5c forever and is holding up/saving money waiting for a 6c. She tried the bigger model, but didn't feel like she could operate it with one hand.

Every time a thread like this comes up, people come out of the woodwork saying the prefer the smaller form factor. I don't think it should be an 'either or' option. People who prefer smaller phones aren't saying there shouldn't be bigger phones - they would just like the choice.

There, I fixed it for ya.
Count me in when that happens.

I couldn't disagree more. I am an adult power user who works in the tech industry (and even develops apps). I usually buy at the high end, but am physically incapable of tapping the far side of the screen (let alone the top) of the iPhone 6/6s while holding it securely in the same hand -- something I do dozens of times per day with my 5s, and frequently have no choice but to do.

I've been anxiously awaiting a way to get more powerful hardware in a package small enough for me to use. When the rumors about this new phone first surfaced, I had been about to start researching what it would take to switch to Android.

Small screen and low-end are separate markets, and I hope Apple addresses them separately.

I use an iPhone 6 Plus and as expected, I can't reach the far end of the screen either. Apple has addressed this in two ways. UI changes and gestures that allow you to rarely have to reach in the top corner. An example of this is the slide from left gesture to go back which would usually be a button in the top corner. Many devs have increasingly taken advantage of this. Failing that, double tapping the home button brings the screen down within reach. Screen size is becoming less of an issue for one handed use.

That said, I understand that some people may want a small phone but given the poor sales of the 5C, it's clear that this is a niche market. The iPhone 6 isn't much larger than the iPhone 5. A slimmer and shorter iPhone 7 with a smaller volume while maintaining the large screen size would address this niche. People in this niche don't really want a small screen, just a small phone overall. There is on the other hand, a big demand for lower priced devices as seen by the persistent demand for the iPod touch, despite years of neglect. I expect that an iPhone priced competitive with the iPod touch would sell to that market of parents buying their teens an entry level price iOS device.

LOL...Fine fine. I get that you like being ripped off, that is good for you. I got my iPhone 6S for half price through work, that is hpw much I am willing to pay. If I have pay for myself, Nexus 6P or Moto X Pure. They both kick iPhone's butt.. LOL..

By the way, there is alternative section in this website, so MacRumor is not for Apple fans only...

Nobody said that.

Yes, those phones kick the iPhone's butt... mate...

iPhone 6S Plus vs. Nexus 6P vs. Lumia 950 XL Speed Test

I have my doubts about the A9. It might use a package similar to the A8 found in the Apple TV 2 and iPad Mini 4, which has 2GB of RAM, but down-clocked. Of course I'd love to see an A9, but that would make likely make this not a "c" product but an iPhone Mini or something. Hopefully it gets a decent camera and the new Touch ID. 3D Touch I think most people could live without. I've got it and mostly only use it for positioning the keyboard cursor and multitasking. I always forget icon and app shortcuts. Sometimes I'll peek a text from my mom so she won't see that I read it and bug me for a response—giving me time to think about it.

I really hope this rumor is true. I personally know a lot of people who would be happy about this. I know SO MANY girls who are hanging onto iPhone 5 and 5s models because they're upset about the giant phones, including my wife, and even a few guys at work.

I think they'll move to a two storage size model like the iPad Pro, e.g.:

iPhone 6c:
16GB: $599 64GB: $699

iPhone 7:
32GB: $699 128GB: $849

iPhone 7 Plus:
32GB: $799 128GB: $949

Also, people complaining about the base model starting at 16GB should wait until we know the actual prices... As long as higher storage tiers are offered (which is 99% likely), complaining about the 16GB model is equivalent to wishing it was $100 cheaper, which makes no sense until we know the price.

That would do lots of good things, get folks to pay $50 more to buy into a 7 or 7 plus, for those too used to 64GB, would be forced to spend $100 more to move to 128GB, plus, it would cut 1/3 of the SKUs out there. Would make for much more efficient supply chain and inventory management.

4'' 2gb ram and A9 sounds damn nice to me. I hope the start at 599, the lower the better but I doubt anything below that

A9, 2gb, bigger battery then 5s. What could go wrong? Well only capacitus of 16 & 64. I want a 128gb model. To be honest ill wait aswell for the 7 event, if no 7 4 incher comes out, will buy this 6c

Does it strike anyone else as bizarre that this apparently cheap, low end budget iPhone will be quicker than the two thirds of the iPad line? I know iPad sales are in decline, but leaving the line languishing with last year's chips is hardly going to help.
