Steve Jobs worked on iPhone 5 - link

Steve wasn't stupid. A larger screen was coming and even larger. Apple/Steve wasn't going to ignore all the trends. Apple sales would be in the gutter if they hadn't gone bigger. iPhone 6 and 6+ are outselling every previous generation of iPhone. Apple has a product road map that projects out 4-5 years. If Steve was around he would have sold it as the perfect size NOW due to the thinness and the double tap to slide the screen downwards.

They've had prototype larger screen phones in the labs for years I'm sure- Tim said on Charlie Rose they could have done it years ago.

--The iPad mini is a perfect example. Steve himself said Eddie Cue hounded him until he finally greenlit an iPad mini. Yet Steve had publicly said previously that any smaller than the iPad screen was too small to use comfortably (he was right too, the mini is much harder to type on, it's awkward).

--iPod w/ video is another one- Jobs publicly said no one wanted to watch video on such a small screen then the iPod 5.5 w/ video came out less than a year later.

--iTunes on Windows. Jobs said his team harassed him for 6 months until he said okay- he had already said he'd NEVER make iTunes available for Windows users.

Don't think Steve couldn't change his mind or would reveal everything. He said what he needed to say at the time.

I've adjusted to a iPhone 6 much easier than I thought I would- and I bet most people are. But I don't have some massive Otterbox case on it. I use something more reasonable. Spigen Capsule and it's good protection with not much bulk.

Totally agree that should still offer the 4 inch phone. There seems to be a demand for it.

Yup, he went back on his word a lot, which is good. Times and the needs of people change. It's good someone can accept that and move on and make what's best for the customers, regardless of past opinions.

It's more likely the iPhone 5s will become the iPhone 6c. They may not even call it a iPhone 6c and just keep the 5s name.

I don't see Apple taking a step backwards in size. The iPhone 6 has been their most popular phone.

i am very much up for the 4 inch..
even smaller - as i'm thinking the 3.5. was really cool

i'm not much into the -> my phone is a device to watch a movie on - stuff
i'd like to have a thing that fits in my pocket, and works fine as a phone, a texing device (whatever messenger it might be) and to look up stuff on the interweb or order a pizza on amazon.
certainly i'd like to have a state of the art phone, apple for sure, and with fast LTE and the newest charging cable.

lets go 4 inch!
come on apple!

and please no sleep-wakebutton on the right side. top hand is fine - it even works on the even larger ipad; who put it on the side?

cheers
floling

I still have my old iPhone 5 with a broken screen. Compared to my 6, it does feel like a toy and I cant imagine going back.

This....and for all of those who think the 6 is too big, now they might have an option. Win win.

I think they are going to skip it and go to the 7, Tim cook said the 6 will stay around for a little longer

You are only allowed to buy the base storage amount? I never understood people's complaints about the base storage. Buy the bigger phone if you need it!

People who use smart phones primarily for business do not need 32GB! We don't need to keep our entire music libraries, keep our collection of 5,000 selfies, watch any random back episode of Community at will or have a choice of 25 different games to play on our phones. Small storage= lower price= better for business use.

Your comments are just shallow white washing and have little substance as a defense for the stagnant storage of the iPhone.

My criticisms were also directed at the upcoming flagship (spare no expense) model or did you not realize the iPhone doesn't cater to penny pinchers at $650 base (US)? If you need to save a buck (for business or w/e) go buy an iPhone C or last year's model.

16gb as a base option has been the standard since the iPhone 5. This is long overdue for an update given just about everything else on the phone since the 5 has been upgraded. What's your counterargument? You prefer an option that's 3yrs old? You believe yesterday's tech at today's prices are a good value? Not very business minded of you.

It's also worth noting that iOS has updated the max size of its apps to 4gb (https://www.macrumors.com/2015/02/12/apple-increases-maximum-app-size/) guaranteeing your apps will squeeze more of your space more than before.

As for your nonsense straw man about trying to fit entire music libraries, 5k pics, etc, I have 24 albums on my phone which uses about 8gb of space along with a handful of podcasts - that's hardly a massive amount - let alone an entire library. Having just two games on my phone Infinity Blade 2 (1.2gb) and Monument Valley (500mb) take up a sizable chunk with essential apps like Flipboard, Pocket and others approaching 200mb. The OS itself is now over a gig.

It's great you get by on simply checking your mail or whatever monastic existence your "business" use requires. I don't - but that's not even relevant or to the point.

What's relevant are the experiences of most moderate users which a premium product like the iPhone is aimed at and if you've read these forums even somewhat you'll see 16gb is increasingly a problem for them.

If all I cared about were gimmicks like a bigger screen I could buy a Samsung. Apple has typically differentiated themselves by a better complete experience for a slightly higher price than their competition. That experience is now increasingly hamstrung by a cheapness on their part for the base model of a flagship product.

My wife has a 6 and I don't consider her a clown.... I have the 6+ and don't consider myself a clown..... Oh... I fixed your quote for you.

Perhaps not a clown per se...

-Just bad taste- ;)

But you're in rich company if it makes you feel better...

I share your desire for a fresh new design. Currently it's as though J. Ive has been sitting back waiting for the next gushing praise, award, or other accolades based on past work. It's as though merely having his name on the roster is enough. How long will Apple milk this old iPhone style?

Back to a tiny iPhone, I'm not surprised. Jobs alone spent a very long time programming the faithful that it's all they'd ever need. A massive group of the Apple faithful bought that story hook, line and sinker.

I'm not an Apple faithful I just won't but a large phone period. When Apple went to the iPhone 5 I went away it was to long thin and now the phones are just big and ugly. I don't want to surf the web, play games, or read books I just want to check my mail, whatsapp, and call people.

It would be great to see them keep a smaller version in the updated line. My wife just isn't willing to go bigger than about iPhone 5 size.

Hmmmmm.... guess we have a very different definition of "humor"..... for it to be funny others have to agree that it's funny.

Humor has nothing to do with agreement. It's not a necessary condition. Just like sadness, happiness or any other emotion you may experience. It's personal to you or me. Can you enjoy my posts without someone's agreement? By your definition apparently not - which is nonsense. Feel free to enjoy them without anyone's agreement.

But, if you're so easily offended or enraged by a picture of Liberace deriding your prized consumer product or the other poster describing it as clownish, a public forum seems an odd thing for you to engage with - hurt feelings are not our job to mend.

Ok time to move on...I suggest you do the same.

Perhaps you can lead by example... :)

You are Missing The Point!!!!

Why would Apple increase their base size from 16GB? You want them also to throw in 4GB's or Memory?... OK,,,, why buy another or upgrade ever again..

It costs Apple a quarter to increase 16GB to 32GB,,, and another quarter to put more Memory in for that matter (they want you to upgrade,, they could put that in whenever they want).. They are not going to do that,,, you want the phone 32GB,, you'll have to purchase the 64GB,,, Apple wins HUGE and barely pay anything for the increase. They are dangling a carrot.. Personally,,, I don't care,,, everything I have is uploaded to a cloud,,, pics, docs, videos, songs,,, and am not a gamer.

You're right - I'm missing the point if you mean your disorder:

Couldn't agree more. Everything about the 6 design is out of sorts with the tapered appearance of the MacBooks and iMac. The rounded edges are reminiscent of the first iPhone, a regressive move that doesn't move the aesthetic of the design forward.

Personally I would have liked to see something embracing the tapering aesthetic of the MacBooks or the hand fit of the 4. While not perfect something in this general direction:

Hmmm. This kinda reinforces my prediction.

In September:

6s and 6s Plus as new flagships.
6 and 6 Plus discontinued, much like the 5
6c also announced for "mid tier". Has 4 inch screen, but with as many of 6's internals as possible. (Perhaps a 4.7 inch version as well for $50 more? May be a bit confusing)
5s goes down to the "low end" tier.

IF this were true, Apple might keep creating "c" models every other year to keep refreshing a 4-inch device for the midrange iPhone. Seems unlikely, but anything's possible, really.

Look forward to 6S. 6S Plus is likely not my cup of tea assuming it is the same form factor as 6 Plus. Still awkward to use in one hand no matter how many times I played with it in the Apple Store.

:(

The 4.7" is, however, as comfortable as 5S in my hands, and typing is actually more accurate than my 5S due to the wider keys, yet still feeling natural. The same applies to tapping UI controls and swiping gestures, like the Swipe Right to Go Backward and Swipe to Archive. Probably because my thumbs can still comfortably reach the pointing edges on the 6, but not on the 6 Plus. Moreover, in my experience, the longer width also makes some "swipe-able" UI elements harder to complete if you use it with just one hand. YMMV.
