"A new 4-inch iPhone was also rumored in December 2014, with a report claiming that the device would be aimed toward female users. However, even if a new 4-inch iPhone isn't introduced, Apple will presumably*have the iPhone 5s to offer for free on a two-year contract once the current models slide down."

Must be a blow to so many males that want a 4" iPhone.

Hopefully they avoid the SKU-creep trap w/ the iPhone that they fell into with the iPad.

And my wife has an iPhone5 and it really is a nice form-factor for day-to-day use if you don't have man-pants and can't carry a purse / backpack / fannypack / holster for whatever reason (e.g. work-related constraints).

4 inch would be great :) i hope no low cost iphone like 5 c

4 inch Display with energy saving 14nm Chip from Samsung sounds good :apple:

Because iPhone 6 is really to big :p

I like the C name :) The C stands for color and if they plan to release a color iPhone6 model it makes perfect sense to keep it. It's the S that always stands for something different every time it's released.

What will S be for this time?

Stability? The rumored focus of iOS 9. That might not be a hardware feature, but neither was the 4S's Siri.

I'm happy with my 5C in every way. I think the only thing that would tempt me to upgrade is another colored 4" iPhone. But it would also have to have the finger print scanner with Apple Pay. And at least iPhone 6 performance. 5S performance would not be good enough to temp me; that'd be two generations behind the new flagships. I don't think a larger screen iPhone could lure me from my 5C until it's so old its battery won't hold a reasonable charge.

It only came out in September of 2014.

It's a Five Year Old Design.

The iPhone 4 debuted with this design. All Apple did was enlarge it and round off the flat edges. Changes so minor the average person doesn't notice.

For all the design awards J. Ive has received, he can certainly do better than a flat slab in a very plain shape. There's no style to the iPhones appearance. Bland, buggy and unreliable I'm very eager to buy the next model, odds alone suggest it cannot possibly be as bad as these current models.

Good to see MR is environmentally friendly and continues to recycle these rumours every year.

A 6S....... Who saw that coming :)

Yeah.. just no. If the SIMPLE 6 is too big for you you CAN'T palm a basketball. Cmon man, i can palm one and i can easily use the 6 PLUS one-handed. What are you talking about.... There are basically no more 4" inches phones. And that's for a reason.

Regardless, there are a lot of people who prefer smaller phones. The iPhone 6 is next to useless for me as I can't use it one handed. (One handed = me getting my thumb to the top of the screen for interactive notifications, notifications centre and the top row of icons). Many have no need for a larger screen as 4 inches is more than enough.

Thus I support Apple offering 3 sizes of the iPhone (with an updated 4 inch with a newer processor). That suits everyone.

Agreed. I don't care if they act like they are soooo generous for giving us all that, or calling it something "only apple can do": Just give my a 32GB baseline. You know, like others did in late 2013

The phone is even less value than ever when you consider that contracts may have better data allowances these days, but the contract duration has gone from 18 to 24 months to cover the cost of the phone too. It needs to be better value for money.

Eh. This female loves her 6+. Daughter is coveting it, so I'm sure I'll upgrade to the new 6s+ and give her the 6+.

In other news, iPhone 7 rumored for a 2016 release.

Sources say it will feature a completely new designe and will be offered in varying sizes.

I like the 5/5S form factor. If they can dump the 6 specs into that smaller body, then they'll have my money. If it's only going to be a colored version of the 5S, then I'll stick with my 5S another year.

if:

no 4in screen with the same specs as a 6s + the same 16gb base storage + (un-flush) pimple cam = no reason to upgrade.

You are only allowed to buy the base storage amount? I never understood people's complaints about the base storage. Buy the bigger phone if you need it!

People who use smart phones primarily for business do not need 32GB! We don't need to keep our entire music libraries, keep our collection of 5,000 selfies, watch any random back episode of Community at will or have a choice of 25 different games to play on our phones. Small storage= lower price= better for business use.

I will throw my 2 cents. I can also palm a basketball, but find the 6 too big for one handed use. Also I find the feel in pocket to be too big. I do regret switching for my iphone 5. In all fairness I do not consume a lot of media on my phone so a smaller screen does not affect me that much. I would prefer a smaller size to handle and pocket. For those who question the one hand usage it is about multitasking for me. Sometimes I need to be writing, on a land line and getting info off my cell at the same time.

no iPhone 7 name......

too early huh ? if there is a 5s there must be a 6s and some others otherwise there won't be a patten, and Tim will slide.

We can't have that now can we.

Why won't they just call the 4 inch iPhone "mini"

iPhone 6S
iPhone 6S Plus
iPhone 6S Mini

In a perfect world... that makes the most sense.

All models would have the same guts inside... so you just have to choose a size. Simple.

That's kinda what they did with the iPad last generation. The same iPad... but in two different sizes.

The problem I see is with pricing. Apple's flagship model has always started firmly at $649

So would the current generation 4" model start there? Or at $549?

That might wreck Apple's ASP

So Apple might offer a 4" phone... but it might not have ALL the features of its bigger siblings. They will limit it some way to push you towards the more expensive model.

The new 4" model might get TouchID, ApplePay and the latest processor to keep the platform humming along for the next few years... but it might be lacking other things like a better camera.

Apple is no stranger to lowering prices in their other product lines. The 13" Macbook Air started life at $1800... but now you can get one for $1000. (and the 11" model is $900)

I just wonder if they would radically change their cash-cow iPhone lineup.

I'm having a hard time imagining Apple offering any sort of "current" iPhone at $549

And they certainly wouldn't start selling a 4" iPhone for $649 after they offered the 4.7" model at that price.

I'm excited for the possibility of a new 4" phone... but it might not be exactly what we think it will be.

I just pray they keep good specs in the 4 inch display!

I have large hands, I can palm a basketball easily, and I think the iPhone 6 display is simply to big.

When Steve Jobs said the 4 inch display was the perfect size because your thumb could easily manage the corner of the device, he couldn't have been more correct.

Agree x1000000!

I really hope Apple gonna release a NORMAL size iPhone, not just these ugly oversized freakphones.

Highest switchover rate from Android users. I'd say that the 6/6+ have been a resounding success, despite all the complaints from MR users that the screen would be too big. I've had a similar sized phone for almost a year now and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I don't think it's too big at all. It now seems like the right size, even for regular things like web browsing. Watching video and using full screen apps is a much more pleasant experience.

But with the 6/6+ being not much more than the 5S in a bigger size, I wonder if we will see some better innovation on the internals and screen in the 6S or if we will have to wait until the 7. Apple has obviously won over a lot of the large screen users, but they need the technology inside to support the larger screen and the apps that will take advantage of that. More RAM, more storage space, higher resolution screen, etc. They have the opportunity to really pull in a lot of market share with the failure that has been Android 5.0 Lollipop. People are looking for a better experience, and Apple can offer that and woo away even more Android users. Unless Cyanogen is successful in making Lollipop everything that it should have been, and gets users to switch to their OS, and gets their OS baked in to phones.

I will never understand this obsession with one handed use of an iPhone.

You're assuming people actually want to use their phone one handed. I can do every task 2-5 times faster by using both hands. Even with my work iPhone 5s, which is so incredibly tiny, I can type and maneuver faster using two hands. Using one hand is extremely slow.

On my personal 6+, two handed is basically required, but for people like me that prefer using our phones two handed and can't understand the obsession with one handed use, it just makes sense.

The point here is that people use their phones differently, have different hand sizes, etc. so multiple sizes (choice) is a good thing.

You've never used your phone walking down the street? Used it while holding on to a subway pole? While carrying something? There are tons of reasons one-handed use is necessary.

Besides, it's not just about one-handed use. The smaller phone size allows for a stronger, tighter grip. I don't want a giant phone I have to baby and cradle in my hand; I want a phone I can grip securely when I use it on the go.

Posting this from my 4s while I wait for my crappy 3 year contract to be up later this year, and I can't wait to get my hands on the 6s Plus. To me, the bigger the screen, the better, so long as the body doesn't get any bigger than it is now. Hopefully the option of a 4" model does return for those who want it, but I have no interest in ever using a phone this small again.
