Meanwhile I ordered two phones a few days after launch and they arrive tomorrow morning.

Thanks T-Mobile.

I guess I'm getting old, I just can't do this kind of thing anymore. I pre-order the thing in my underwear at midnight and get it delivered to me (ideally again in my underwear) while a lot of these guys are probably still waiting in line, or at home frustrated because they ran out of the model they wanted.

I get it for the first few years but this is the 9th iPhone release day. People say they line up for the experience. I don't get it at this point, but it doesn't hurt me so queue up everyone :D
By the iPhone 12 the day will be as big as the Super Bowl with 1000's of people lined up at each store to get a phone. That's just kinda how it is in America. We worship violence and brash consumerism!

I don't know why anybody would do this. I also don't get why people go to concerts when the music sounds better recorded, can be played anywhere at any time, and costs less than live performances.

I cannot imagine this being enjoyable ergo it cannot be.

:p

Haha, yep. Tis that time of the year, let's cue the I don't understand (or this is so uncool) comments.

I don't understand why its fun for two teams to run at each other with a odd shape, ball? If you can even call it that. Knowingly suffer brain damage. Also the people who pay up to $200 per game, while paying $10 for crappy beer and over priced hot dog. Wait, what that's actually considered cool and not lame? But waiting for a phone in a non-violent way is?

All of these people need to be told you can preorder online and never put on pants yet still get an iPhone 6s. I'd say they need to get a life as well but I'd probably take a lot of heat for that so I'll refrain.

I might go check out the store tomorrow to see if I can qualify for Apple's upgrade program (don't have exactly stellar credit) but I'm definitely not lining up.

I will be doing this soon, as I haven't got the time to wait in for a delivery as I won't be in during the afternoon, plus i have tonight off so I might as well :) I just enjoy the atmosphere of doing this instead of waiting indoors all day :p

I can maybe understanding queuing up years ago when the iPhone's were in short supply for months after launch.

But they make so many of them now that's there's plenty of stock everywhere, even the carriers have enough to go around.

Ordered mine from Apple last week, comes tomorrow. By post.

Never queued for a phone, but I did for the iPad 2.

Was pretty cool, only at a local reseller, not an Apple store.

Might drop by the Bullring tomorrow to see how queues are doing at 7am :D

I don't understand why anyone would do this.

I stood in-line last year to get 6 plus. My contract with AT&T was not over yet on the pre-order date. I was not eligible to upgrade with sub until after pre-order date. I had to stay inline to get the phone on the release date.

think out side of the box. not everyone is the same.

Someone didn't realise one can preorder. I'll be getting mine tomorrow morning courtesy of UPS.

I know someone who met his wife at one of these things. Now, they don't all do that to get a wife eventually (especially as I suspect that most of those people are men anyway), but the point is that it's just a thing people do together. It might not be a useful or reasonable thing to do, but most things are not. People watch football and drink alcohol. That doesn't make any sense. They could just wait till the game is over and look up the result and do something useful instead. Also they could drink water, which is a lot healthier.

I guess the reason why people do this kind of stuff is to get an excuse to socialise. And the reason why they need an excuse for that is simply because life is kind of boring when you live in America in 2015. Nothing much out of the ordinary really happens, so people make a big deal out of waiting for the next thing to happen. Not everything needs to be productive and 100% reasonable.

You do you bro.

Nothing wrong with people doing what they want. Wait in line, pre-order online, hold for pickup, take a day off, whatever it is, their choice. It doesn't bother you and you might not agree with it but choice is AWESOME!

:)

Personally... I think it's great some people want to do this. I would suspect it's fun event to be part of... silly I know, but heck, I've waited in lines for silly things and had a blast doing so myself. So I can see the appeal.

Besides... like you point out... to each their own and I hope they all have a great time at the launch!

I've never waited outside a store overnight, but I did get to an O2 store at 5am on launch day for the iPhone 3G. And also about the same time at an Apple store for iPhone 4.

Its a lot of fun waiting in line and chatting with other people who are just really excited that there is a new phone due. This year I've ordered online and thats sort of easier but not as fun.

Lots of crapping here about Apple geeks waiting in line. Quick story:

I was an assistant manager at an Apple Store and was scheduled to be opener for our grand opening. Get things prepped, start preparing everything for the big day. I had also camped out for opening of every Apple Store in our state so far with a collection of T-shirts they used to give out. I showed up at my store at midnight, got in line (4th place) and had a great time talking to other Mac lovers, chatting, talking about software and just ultimately having a nice time. One of the guys was from my MUG (Mac User Group for you young people).

Then at 7:30AM, I got up, unlocked the doors and started my duties. The guys were surprised but they understood what it means to wait for a store opening. I've camped out overnight for every Steve-Note at Macworld in NY, Boston and SF since 2003. I went to over 15 store openings and I've camped out for every iPhone since the first generation in 2007.

I was first in line for the iPhone 3G in San Francisco in 2008 (photos of me if you guys wanna google it).

Waiting in line is a tradition for me and I love talking to other apple lovers. **** all you want but some of us actually enjoy it. It's the experience.

Unfortunately, most of the people waiting in line these days are just buying phones to sell on the black market in China and the past 2 years of iPhone waiting are lawyer and doctor assistants just getting phones for their boss or a GF holding line for her BF who works nights and all kinds of stories. I haven't met a real die hard line waiter in quite a while. The romance isn't what it used to be.

I'll be lining up tonight in New Hampshire with my Apple hat, shirt and Macbook with charger. I can't wait!

I agree I almost feel like lining up for an autograph of your favorite athlete or celebrity. It's all in good fandom, we are Apple fans
