Lots of crapping here about Apple geeks waiting in line. Quick story:

I was an assistant manager at an Apple Store and was scheduled to be opener for our grand opening. Get things prepped, start preparing everything for the big day. I had also camped out for opening of every Apple Store in our state so far with a collection of T-shirts they used to give out. I showed up at my store at midnight, got in line (4th place) and had a great time talking to other Mac lovers, chatting, talking about software and just ultimately having a nice time. One of the guys was from my MUG (Mac User Group for you young people).

Then at 7:30AM, I got up, unlocked the doors and started my duties. The guys were surprised but they understood what it means to wait for a store opening. I've camped out overnight for every Steve-Note at Macworld in NY, Boston and SF since 2003. I went to over 15 store openings and I've camped out for every iPhone since the first generation in 2007.

I was first in line for the iPhone 3G in San Francisco in 2008 (photos of me if you guys wanna google it).

Waiting in line is a tradition for me and I love talking to other apple lovers. **** all you want but some of us actually enjoy it. It's the experience.

Unfortunately, most of the people waiting in line these days are just buying phones to sell on the black market in China and the past 2 years of iPhone waiting are lawyer and doctor assistants just getting phones for their boss or a GF holding line for her BF who works nights and all kinds of stories. I haven't met a real die hard line waiter in quite a while. The romance isn't what it used to be.

I'll be lining up tonight in New Hampshire with my Apple hat, shirt and Macbook with charger. I can't wait!
The other day I read that no walk-in iPhone 6s sales in 4 US states, Oregon, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Alaska. So I hope you have already pre-ordered and just wait in the line for pick-up?

How we live in a divided world, on one hand people queue up for a phone they pretty much own already, and others queue up to pay a people smuggler to get them on a sure to sink boat across the mediterranean sea.

Just saying

I don't know why anybody would do this. I also don't get why people go to concerts when the music sounds better recorded, can be played anywhere at any time, and costs less than live performances.

I cannot imagine this being enjoyable ergo it cannot be.

:p
Weeeeeellllll that's a little different right... You are equating being at an event the same as waiting for an event.
Know you are joking of course, but it is insane. The fact is that the queues in the UK largely consist of large groups of dudes grey marketing them to India or other places who don't have a tomorrow launch day.

This is at Apple Stores. Since moving here 5 years ago, I wait outside of the local Verizon Wireless Store for my yearly iPhone pickup.

The nearest Apple Store is almost 2 hours south so I don't make the drive anymore. Hard to get there, wait in line and then drive back up and be at work on time.

I heard that many of the people in front of the German stores are from northern and especially Eastern Europe where the iPhone won't be available for a few weeks.
These people have can't preorder or reserve a phone so the only way for them to get one is line up and hope they have stock.

That also explains why the lines are so long in Germany compared to the other stores.

My impression from Munich:

I stood in line for the iPhone 5 three years ago, and already then more than a few in the line didn't seem like your usual Apple customer, and more like...hired wallets (if you don't mind my CIA guy impression).

Saw a few images in the media today, and it looks to me like it's happening again. The especially long line in Munich is maybe not unrelated to current events here.

Not trying to spark any unrelated topics, just my two cents because most here seem to think the lines are made up just of crazy Apple fans.

Anyways, I made a pick-up reservation for my Space Grey 6S 30 mins after pre-orders went live, so I feel a bit like cheating that I don't need to wait in line and can just walk in and pick up my phone...during lunch break. :D

I know this has nothing to do with this thread, but, could someone tell me if I use a upgrade from another phone line in my plan to use with a different number (on same plan), can I just switch sim cards to be able to use that number on the new phone? Thanks in advance.

Not sure where i would find this answer in the other forums.
Yes it's called a cross upgrade. Happens all the time, you got this!

I've never camped out overnight but did go three hours early to the first Apple Store opening in my general area of the state and I bet there were a thousand people ahead of me. The line went from the store on the second floor of the mall downstairs, outside the mall and around the building. They ran out of free t-shirts in my size so I took a Small as a souvenir. Actually, I had a lot of fun...kind of like a tailgate party except no burgers & beer. If I every do it again, I'll bring a camping chair!

I pre-order the thing in my underwear at midnight and get it delivered to me (ideally again in my underwear)...

Have you considered combining the best of both worlds? You did your pre-order at home in your underwear. Now you can camp outside your house (ideally still in your underwear, of course) while you wait for your delivery.

Happens all the time, you got this!

I just wanted to say thank you, Oldfash33, for being so polite to macfoxpro with the question!

ADAM!

I friended you several years back on FB and I think Flickr. Saw you in a video about Apple stuff and the cult following years back. You were sitting on the floor doing something. Through following you, I saw you had parted ways with your SO and decided to do some traveling and then you kind of disappeared. Your profile pic on FB went blank and I think it's now gone? Anyways, enjoyed your posts and info sharing. Didn't realized you posted here or I just was blind.

Good to have people like you here!

It is surprise to know that people are still doing this. Home delivery for free sounds much attractive that waiting outside worrying the next bathroom visit.

Maybe the German government are handing out 6s's to the refugees? Or this is the reason they fled Syria in the 1st place, no launch dates!

Yes. There are sure to be tons of scalpers tonight. Tons. Sad, but true.

Whoa hello!!! Hi Kris. Long time.

quick recap, I changed my last name to Chandler in June to take my step-dad's last name. I moved to New Hampshire in 2010 to take a job as a project Manager at TomTom and I travel as much as possible and am still a huge Apple Geek! we should chat more. it's been quite a while! Laura is still living in San Francisco working as head of online design for I think Pottery barn Kids. She and I talk often and I see her at least once a year in SF to go to a baseball game, etc. She's fantastic. Life is good overall.

http://blog.adamchandler.me is my new home online. Outside of sometimes commenting on forums, I don't really participate in social media like Twitter and Facebook anymore. Just have my blog (so old school) and flickr.

I see nothing wrong with savvy Apple fans wanting to queue to get their hands on the greatest piece of consumer technology from minute one tomorrow. They won't be waiting in all day praying the delivery truck shows up. They'll be playing with their amazing new iPhones while the rest of us put our faith in the likes of UPS.
