As a consumer, I can buy a 64gb microSD card for $20 at full retail.

Apple can get away with this for only 1 reason... Their app developers.

Really? Seems to me they can get away with this only because they "coincidentally" don't include a microSD slot on the iPhone like most other smartphones have.

The reason why Apple does this is so that they can force people into paying extra $100 to get the 64GB. If they made 32GB an entry-level, many would go for that option.

Or they could increase the price of a base 32Gb model with $100 and thereby making everyone pay more!

Unbelievably there are people who get on by fine with 16gb, both my parents have 16gb iphones, 16gb ipad minis etc.

That was even with purchasing music from itunes, now they've both moved to apple music they need even less space.

I'll be buying the 128gb model purely because I love bigger iphone games/apps and will be holding a lot of my DSLR photos on them for viewing etc and will download a host of offline apple music tracks.

32GB base model wouldn't hurt anyone.

It would hurt a lot of people because Apple would increase the starting price for the base model by $50-$100.
There is a reason why Apple sells iPhones with 8Gb. They do not want to sacrifice their profit.

We don't know that Apple would increase the price of the base model. The base model has remained the same price since the iPhone 3G, even when it was bumped to 16GB. We're going by the assumption that base model = model that costs $199 (on contract).

Great. Atleast we will have 5GB space available on iPhone and 5GB on iCloud. Then, take few pic, a video and you may have 1-2GB and after few app update even if you don't have any space available, remember you still have 5GB iCloud storage space. I don't see what the fuzz is about, it just work, magically or you're just "storing it wrong".

Funny how some of these people say stuff like: ''if you want more storage, buy it".

Like a €700 phone isn't expensive enough. "No, I'll spend €100 more to double the storage, which Apple pay €5 for...''

I can't understand how some people here can defend Apple in cases like these. But now, I do understand where terms like "sheeple" come from.

It is because we do not care how little or how much a profit a company makes. We evaluate how much value the product brings to US, and if the price is right we buy it. It is because we care LESS about Apple than you do, we are able to do so.

Personally I'm starting to store more music in my 5S than before. 16GB is definitely a tight spot for apps+photos and music. In a third world country (where I live) the jump from 16GB to 64GB will mean 200$ more! So I decided to stick to the 16GB model and buy an iPod (nano). Which obviously is cheaper. Apple will be happy that everyone is inside their ecosystem no matter the product/service.

I don't understand the whiners here. NO ONE is making you buy the 16GB model so stop complaining about it. Would you rather Apple have a base 32GB model, but then sell it at a 32GB model price therefore wiping out the previous 16GB base model price? I for one thought at first 16GB was enough, then when the 5 arrived I had to go 32GB, right now I'm rocking a 128GB iPhone 6 and love all the space. I never once complained about the smaller sizes, I simply just upgraded to a higher storage capacity model. All you whiners are simply showing everyone else how cheap you are. Pony up and get the 64GB model if you really need the capacity.

If Apple keep 16 gb as their base model, it is ABSOLUTE PROOF that when they claim they just want to make amazing products and not amazing profits, they are LYING.

16-64-128 is obviously a strategy to push people to the more expensive models.

If they truly believe in their products, then they would push forward with the specs.

Apple, your call......

The issue, as some have already pointed out is that many folks who aren't tech savvy will buy the 16g version, then be frustrated when they quickly run out of space. They'll then curse Apple and say 'the iPhone sucks'. So to save a few bucks, Apple may be hurting their chances of future sales
Very very very anecdotal and you couldn't be more off on your theory. You said it yourself, people that aren't "tech savvy" will buy the 16GB version. Well if they aren't tech savvy they most likely will not be downloading a bunch of things to their phones. Sure, they may take pictures but I don't think people are so stupid that they can't recognize 16GB is the lowest storage size when choosing which iPhone to buy. The rest of what you said in terms of them getting frustrated and curse Apple out, well that's just plain ridiculous if anyone did that. They bought it and they chose to buy it.

Only an accountant could keep 16GB in 2015.

Even though I'm a shareholder, I'd like to see Apple's profits lower and their taxes higher.

With Steve Jobs, customer satisfaction was paramount; he hated Wall Street. With Tim Cook, shareholder satisfaction is paramount; he hates consumers, unless you're a celebrity.

Nah I don't think it's about how much these people "care" about Apple, it's all about how cheap they want the product. When you start to complain about the price of a product you don't need or aren't forced to buy then you're simply just cheap.

I really don't see how this makes any sense. Care to explain?

16GB storage again? Fail.

It's not though. It's so obvious why they are keeping the 16GB model, yet no-one seems to understand.

The 16GB has the biggest margin out of all the storage options, therefore, while it continues to make the most money, they'll keep it as an option.

Oh, and is anyone forcing you to buy the 16GB model? No, I didn't think so.

I have a 32gb iPhone 5s, which was the middle model when I got it, and it has always been around 80% full. There's no way I could use a 16gb phone, but 64gb seems too big for my needs. I was really looking forward to getting the base model and keeping 32gb. Or I would even pay an extra $50 for 32gb. Why make me pay $100 for an extra large capacity I don't need?

I can't relate to all the hate for just making a cheaper 16gb version available?!?

If you want more get more. I've always gotten the max storage. 16gb is available to those who are cool with streaming, iCloud etc. and have good wifi at home and work.

Seeing as:
- a single photo is over 1 MB in size,
- a single app is at least 50 MB in size for the most basic ones and growing in assets
- a song in iTunes quality is 10 MB
do please elaborate, who on earth wouldn't run out of memory at one point or another?
Also not everyone is lucky enough to have WiFi handy all the time and countries where unlimited LTE/3G is a thing are pretty scarce.

16 GB in a flagship phone with an HD display and forthcoming 4K camera module? Really!?
All this is, is a typical itchy palm on Apple's part, since even Samsung ditched the 16 GB version for the S6.

Mind you, this is all coming from a guy who bought a 64GB 6 plus.
I don't need the 64 GB, I would have been OK with 32 GB, but as you might guess I got up sold after realising that my 16 GB iPhone 5 was constantly running out of memory.

Steve Jobs was no better at customer satisfaction, and he was certainly in for the profit too. At least Tim Cook had the balls to apologise to customers for the poor start of Apple Maps, Steve Jobs never admitted being wrong. Tim has modernised Apple in a big way, he made Apple a more human company. On this note, I hope you will donate some of your many shares to charity.
