Don't see the problem. In the UK I paid £699 for my 64GB which is more than you pay for the 128GB in the USA.
You should be happy that you get things over £150 cheaper than us, by buying a 64GB iPhone in the USA you are paying less than for a 16GB iPhone here.

I can't relate to all the hate for just making a cheaper 16gb version available?!?

If you want more get more. I've always gotten the max storage. 16gb is available to those who are cool with streaming, iCloud etc. and have good wifi at home and work.
Don't forget that apps also keep increasing in size and take up more storage than they used to.

what a joke

2009 - 3G S - VGA video recording (640 by 480) - 16GB base storage

2015 - 6s - 4K video recording (3840 by 2160) - 16GB base storage

I agree with you that 16GB is ridiculous.

But let's get our facts straight. 16GB was not standard until the 4S.

While 16GB for most is probably enough for the majority of people (I know many who have), it is severely dated when you have features requiring more space. I myself have a 32Gb and in reality its really only 26.7Gb. I would never go back to a 16Gb, I mean 12Gb, as I was always running out of space.
Lets hope this is all just a silly rumour. Like most are!

The problem is the pricing strategy. $100 to upgrade to 32GB? Please.

Simply put, the issue here is that the iPhone is Apple's cash cow. They need to keep their profit margin very high on their iPhone in order to continue to grow profits and satisfy investors. It would have been better if Apple innovated and came out with another potential cash cow (and I doubt the Apple Watch qualifies).

I've felt Tim has done a good job since Steve died, but I'm beginning to have some doubts. You can defend Apple on this move if you'd like and say they can get away with it. I agree, they can get away with it but I'd like to amend by saying they can get away with it NOW. If this is Apple's plan for long term growth, they are NOT going to grow in the long term.

What's even more ridiculous is all the people calling this out and they are wrong. The base was 16gb for the 3gs.

They only make the 16gb because people buy it.

If you stop buying it, they'll stop making it, is that simple.

It might also be the case that they make it because most people don't buy it, i.e. they buy the 64GB. If people who would otherwise buy the 64GB model instead bought a 32GB model that would be a double loss for Apple: $100 less in revenue and increased cost of the lower priced sale.

Apple might as well cut the camera module from the 16GB model as well.

They'd save some money, and the sap who convinced themselves that 16GB was enough might just have enough space to perform software updates without deleting half their photo gallery.

People that can afford 4k TVs to play back such videos can probably afford a phone with more memory. For the 99.9% of those who don't have a 4K TV, or the necessity to store a large amount of data, 16GB is perfect.

And yes, Apple is a for-profit business, not a charity for privileged prima donnas who feel they're entitled to everything for free.

But many 4k TVs are cheaper than a 16GB iPhone. So, your point makes no sense.

If Apple changed the base model to 32gb then people would just demand an even cheaper 16gb version!
And they'd have that in a $99 iphone6 or 6c or whatever they will do.

The issue is that we are all subsidizing those people who don't want/need more storage. By making an extra $97 or so profit on our upgrade to 64gb, we become far more profitable customers. This allows them to keep selling the base model cheap while making the crazy profit that they expect overall.

Sell the 16gb for $229 and the 64gb for $269. Start sharing the pain if you can't make the profit you want on the base model.

As a consumer, I can buy a 64gb microSD card for $20 at full retail.

Apple can get away with this for only 1 reason... Their app developers.

I switched to an HTC M8 for a few months. The hardware was beautiful. Many people think Apple stole some of HTC's design for the iPhone 6. The screen had a higher pixel density than either new iPhone. It felt every bit as premium as Apple... Maybe more so. It was $69 on contract last year and came with 32gb. I added a 64gb microSD card and had a premium phone with 96gb storage for $100 on contract.

But I switched back because... Apps. And not Apple's stock apps either, as there is almost always a better option. The App Store is Apple's ace in the hole thanks to all of the developers out there. Apple should make it as easy as possible to stuff our devices with those apps and lock us into the ecosystem.

Even Apple Music could use the bump in storage, as I think the everyday customer would be wowed if Apple did a better job communicating that songs can be saved to your device for free. I think the every day customer is more focused on staying under their data limit than using cloud services.

I'm more interested in the A9 processor, which will once again be the world's most advanced ARM mobile chip.

And stop whining about 16GB already. In our family I've had several 16GB phones and they were always enough. My personal iPhone is 64GB because I actually need the extra storage. Lots of people don't need more than 16GB, so stop thinking Apple has to change the base model because of what **YOU** need, instead of what the average consumer needs.
same could be said about your comment, stop thinking alot of people out there only needs 16gb because of what your family uses.

The reason people are mad is because Apple makes a huge profit by making the base model uncomfortably small in terms of storage in 2015. The steps up to 64gb & 128gb of flash storage is not even close $100 either, so basically Apple is forcing us into stuffing their pockets a bit more.

Why are people mad that they make a huge profit? Would they be willing to pay more if Apple was losing money?

ya exactly. if apple upgrades the storage people will say it's not enough and ask more. likewise if apple upgrades the camera people will say it's not high rez enough and ask for more. and if apple adds faster lte people will say it's not fast enough and want more. seriously wtf is wrong with apple trying to upgrade their phones. they should never improve anything, that'll teach everyone a lesson.

lol
My argument is that they don't have to improve EVERYTHING. Especially to please a group of people who think 16GB is not enough, but 64GB is entirely too much.

Makes no difference to me. I got the 64 GB iPhone 5s and this just means I get a 64 GB iPhone at a cheaper price than before.

Are people here really just whining over having to spend just a little more money to get a substantially better deal?

Makes me wish Apple would just drop the 16 GB model, offer the 64 and 128 GB models, and raise the starting price to $299. That would show everyone.
I've always bought 64gb phones. So I was happy on saving a 100 bucks this time.

Wake up. It's been 16GB base storage since the 3GS. Flash chips have plummeted in price to the point where the difference between 16GB and 32GB (for Apple) is likely to be less than $1. Darn I get angry reading comments like yours.

The value of a product should not be based on how much it cost to produce, but on how much value it provides to you. You should not care if Apple make a lot of profit at all. If the price of the 16Gb iPhone is not worth the money for you, you should not buy it.

You don;t see it do you?
It’s a fantastic margin on a skinny flash chip + Use of their streaming/cloud services. This squeezes money out of you twice.

Why should I care if Apple makes a lot of profit? If i buy a mobile phone from Sony, should I be expecting to pay more than what they are asking for, because Sony is loosing billions of dollar?

No, I buy products based on the value they provide for me, not on how much profit the maker makes. If they make a lot of money and I get great value from the product, I am just fine with that.

I don't really understand why anyone cares that the base is still 16GB... How does it really affect anyone that is complaining about it? If you don't want a 16GB model, don't buy it. Everyone who is complaining that they need 32GB for minimum can now get the 64GB model for the same price the 32GB was previously. So you're getting double the capacity for the same price you previously bought the 32GB for (5S and before).

.

The issue, as some have already pointed out is that many folks who aren't tech savvy will buy the 16g version, then be frustrated when they quickly run out of space. They'll then curse Apple and say 'the iPhone sucks'. So to save a few bucks, Apple may be hurting their chances of future sales
