iPhone 6s turning off at 10-20%

It started happening to me when it was still quite warm outside. Don't think it was related to temperature but rather to battery usage by the phone.
It seems that using to much power at once can cause a shutdown. However, my early shutdowns were sometimes accompanied by battery percentage fluctuations that happened even when the new phone was on standby.

Just happened again at 10% whilst using it in bed. It's totally random, but always happens when using an app.

I'm very appreciative that I stumbled upon this Forum. My son's iPhone 6s 64GB started having these issues just the other day, after updating to 10.1.1. It has the Samsung chip, but I'm not sure if that matters or not. Before landing here I tried the calibration method, restoring phone and using an iCloud backup, restoring from iTunes and using iTunes backup, and finally putting phone in DFU mode and restoring from iTunes and setting up as new. Nothing worked. I called Apple today and as everyone has stated after she ran a diagnostics she stated battery health showed good, but she did see many unusual shutdowns. Because I've already tried everything she would have suggested she set me up a Genius Bar appointment for Friday Nov 18th. Since the phone is still under warranty (Until 12/22) she said she would put in in the notes that the phone needed to be replaced. I signed up just to say Thank You. It's nice to know I'm not alone and all the replies have eased my frustration a little. :)

Yes. Exactly only at cold. And when I make the iPhone warm, I can turn it on without connecting it to any power source.

Not for everyone. Cold and battery intensive applications seem to cause problems for some users and amplify the problem but both my iPhone 6S and my girls iPhone 6 also shut down randomly inside the house while on standby sometimes.

Went to the apple store yesterday, explained the problem and that's I heard apple knows but not openly admitting it, the guy said "yeah we all do that". Checked the phone's diagnostics and found no hardware issue, then said "it's probably software, I'll get you a new phone". And gave us a brand new 6S 128Gb phone!

Seemed very flippant for a £700 phone.

yeah, they certainly know more than they let on!

Mine was fine until I updated to 10. Yesterday, it shut down at 21%. Usually mine is at 10-11% when it shuts down. I turned off app background refresh or whatever it was like someone suggested, but that didn't do anything to help. This is getting annoying, and of course I'm two months out of warranty.

Just came back from the Apple Store, had an appointment scheduled this afternoon.

I did not even have to finish telling the genius my story that he knew what my problem was.

He ran a test on my phone and showed that my battery life was perfect. He acknowledged that it is a common problem and that Apple engineers are on it. He told me iOS 10.1.2 would fix it.

For your info, i have an iPhone 6s 128 gb running iOS 10.1.1 and the problem started on ios9 but it's getting worse everyday. Calibration and restore didn't fix it.

Like I said, guys, it's probably not a battery-related issue. Your phone is having trouble holding charge and you need to specifically request apple store workers to check for that otherwise they'll ignore your problem and make you pay for a replacement even if it's under warranty.

I have a 6s and have been having this problem for quite a while. Phone shuts off when there's about 20-30% battery left, although it can vary. When I hold power button it says plug it in. When I press home and power it comes on, shows 30 or 48% battery or whatever and after 5 seconds shuts off.

I tried a full dfu restore and it didn't work. I went to the apple store and they checked that my hardware/battery were just fine. The guy said I was the third person today with the same problem and that he expects it to be corrected shortly with an update. One of their suggestions was to drain the battery completely, however this was impossible due to the problem.

FINALLY I tried running down the battery with the flashlight and it WORKED. Battery drained all the way and it doesn't shut off anymore.

Important note: you can't use any other programs. I tried making it drain faster by turning on netflix and the flashlight--it shut off as usual. You need to turn on the flashlight and just put your phone down and don't touch it. Once it drains, charge to 100% as normal. If I remember correctly I had to do this two nights in a row and have since not had problems.

Hope this helps, pretty annoying problem to have.

How can they check for that? In my experience in store they can only run wireless diagnostic tests, if they cannot diagnose a problem then they will send it to the repair center.

If you’re out of warranty you might need to pay there and then for possible phone replacement, unless you specifically instruct them to change the battery, then you have to pay for that, upfront.

What really would help is Apple admitting the issue and outlining the steps users need to take to get it fixed.

Which country was that in?

I forgot how they checked for it, but they definitely can. It's how I got my 5s replaced for free more than a year ago. Keep in mind, they found no issues with my battery.

And I don't think a user can check for it by themselves the sane way they can check for battery diagnostics.

Screen full brightness and streaming video will drain the battery quicker than the flashlight.

Also Li-ion and Li-ion polymer battery's do not like being run cold. It is normal for a battery not to run when at near freezing temperatures. Keep the phone close to your body if it is really cold out.

I can't stream video on it because it shuts down with 20% life remaining. I turned on the flashlight with 22% remaining, and it took a few hours but it finally got down to 1% then died. First time I've seen my phone hit 1% in several weeks.

Disable at Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh and your phone won't turn off. And battery will last longer than with flashlight or too bright screen.
Hope Apple will fix this issue soon.

That's encouraging. 10.2 beta 2 doesn't fix it yet though :( I thought my battery was broken somehow. I remember having a recall after 2 years on my iPhone 5. It was pretty great having a free battery after so much time :)

Same country, same city by the way.

I was just on to Apple support about this and the agent said Apple are aware of the issue and working on it. No timeframe given.

In the meantime I should try another iTunes restore as new and carry a charger with me when I go places. Obviously an iTunes restore isn't going to work the second time I do it, especially seeing as its either a software or hardware fault Apple know about.
