The reality is that the only issue is one of demand outstripping supply. Could Apple be doing this on purpose? Sure -- lots of reasons why.Is this the only way we can get these phones - I mean Samsung doesn't have these issues and phones prior to iPhone didn't have backorders and delayed shipping. How can we get out of this cycle? Because the best way to get your phone early is to indeed pre-order, but when that doesn't work what other option do you have?
However, I don't think that's what Apple's doing, even though they've been at this for a long time.
Perspective: they are selling a product to a market and they don't know how it will fare. They can't always guarantee it'll be a hot seller; that's part of the reason there aren't 50 million devices (almost literally) by launch day (aside from practical supply chain reasons and all).
OTOH, since news reports state Apple's increasing yield to 100 million units by year's end, they also recognize there is real demand and -- as with any competent business -- they want to sell as many as they can.
At the end of the day, when you preorder, you guarantee a place for yourself in line. It may not be quick, but it's going to happen.
