Rumor is that the Swiss Army will be designing the next Apple adapter.

universal_converter_box.png
[doublepost=1469232474][/doublepost]What?! No USB-C on that adapter unit?!? Guess it's not MacBook compatible. :-(

Glad I was not discouraged with all the previous rumors. Still getting two 7+ and hope these latest rumors come true. Only thing missing is wireless charging.

I dont understand what the big deal is...
Why not just leave the adapter on the end of the headphones?
You'd have to carry the headphones if you want to use them right?

Some people use headphones with more than one device (phone) so the adapter should come off in this scenario.
No listening and charging.
How many dongles is too many?

This would be a great phone, if it ships with these specs. Much better than what I expected for the "7".

Really stupid.
Do you also think people with one ear can't detect stereo?

Sarcasm? Stereo is not the same as two channels. With one ear you can still detect the content in the channels (maybe lead guitar in one and rhythm in the other?), but you've lost all timing and level differences between the ears humans predominately use to localise sounds, so you won't get any stereo phantom image. You'll have to rely on the spectrum changing ever so slightly given your pinnae, and level differences for high frequency sounds shaded by your head, when you move your head to even be able to localise where a single sound source is. Probably the most perceptible effect in this situation is that the phone will be about 3dB louder.

It's easy to get confused by this stuff so here's some links:)

Regarding the dongle (which it appears is your main concern), Jobs was always a big proponent of removing ports/buttons. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that. Dongles were very much a thing in the Jobs era to assist in the transition away from certain ports. I doubt Jobs would have wanted to keep the headphone jack. I'm not a fan and not defending the decision, but it's a classic Apple/Jobs move.

The issue is that the 3.5mm jack is a standard port that is going to be replaced by a non standard port rendering every headphone useless and I don't think a dongle is the answer, neither is the more costly and inferior quality bluetooth.

I guess none of us can say for sure ATM, BUT it would be SO unlike Apple to do this. They have NEVER done this. 99.99% sure they will release standard EarPods with a lightening jack, I mean.....why not, really, it's no big deal, it no advancement, just a change, no brainer IMO. I'm sure they will release an adaptor, but they will sell it separately. IF they do include one(I don't think so) they WILL still include lightening EarPods.

Another dongle to lose or misplace.......brilliant.

It's not even that. The lighting connector is a flat pin. having your phone in your pocket puts pressure on the lighting connector and eventually the connection becomes just a little loose.

It damages the cable and the phone over time.

I have no objections to a redesign of the headphone jack, but using the lightning port for that purpose is a very bad idea.

When has apple ever shipped a device or system with a dongle. Or shipped a device that required use of a dongle?

I doubt this would happen. The iPhone 7 will probably ship with lightning headphones and a lightning charger. A dongle is probably an accessory for $5.

Macbook with one port, apple watch which requires a propriety charger...

Tell me where apple sells a dongle for $5

Here's a thought. What if BOTH lightning enabled earbuds as well as a 3.5mm to lightning adapter are included in the box? (that way, anyone that has hardwired earphones that they absolutely LOVE have no reason to call Apple and complain?) (seems a lot cheaper than a phone call to me).

And, as for Octopus-like - why couldn't it be as straight-forward as the micro-usb to lightning adapters I get from monoprice? :)

That adaptor looks too short for a 3.5mm jack and just think of the stress on the device, just sit down with jeans and snap - oops something just broke
[doublepost=1469234945][/doublepost]
Unless your head is 4/5 of an inch wide and you hold the phone to touch your nose it won't sound any different.
Cue instructable with the twin cup air amplifier that separates the two channels :)

Car = bluetooth as well as USB to lightning dongle (from your car manufacturer) - if you have a port in the car - if you do, it's charging and signalling in one.

Unless you're talking about a charging case, how are you playing pokemon go and charging at the same time? (on foot that is...if while driving, see point above). If walking, expect the charging cases to extend the lightning connector (hell, maybe they'll also break out a 3.5mm jack for you to patch into the lightning connector) :)
my 2008 mazda doesn't have bluetooth

Just chiming in to agree that removing the headphone jack is about the stupidest idea I've ever heard of. It's just downright asinine. I'm planning my "final" iPhone to be the SE (under the assumption here that the modern, idiotic, Apple will indeed remove the headphone jack). It's sad, but I suppose it has to eventually happen. Apple can't keep removing the "great" from their products and replacing it with the "just barely good enough" or even the "utterly crap-tastic" and expect to keep their customers.

Heh...it's a micro-usb to lightning adapter (I was suggesting perhaps it could be as minimalist - others mentioned after the fact that Apple would be removing the DAC, so a dongle would need to include one...making it considerably more bulky).

But, none of us really KNOW what they're doing for an adapter/dongle yet, now do we? (so, deep breaths...have a drink) :)

Well, maybe (if you truly LOVE your 2008 Mazda and plan on keeping it for some time), you should get a 3rd party receiver that supports Car Play. :) Otherwise, there's other options (varying levels of expense and quality to add BT to your existing setup).

At this point, the lack of the headphone jack is almost certain. What I want to know is the reaction of the audiences. Will they cheer when Apple announces this or will they boo? Must be an interesting keynote.

I might have, but changing cars sometime. But if Apple removes the headphone Jack, I may transition from iPhone to Android which for me also means replacing all my Apple gear with Windows/Linux etc...

Umm...Linux, ok, but Windows?! Really? Ok....getting off topic. (and, yes, used Windoze for decades)
You just may (if you haven't) give the latest BT wireless offerings a listen before putting yourself through the turmoil of leaving the ecosystem.

Maybe they will include both the lightning headphones and an adaptor and that's they reason for conflicting reports? Yeah I know this is Apple we are talking about but you never know.
Can someone explain how a 3.5mm to lightning adaptor which including the adaptor and 3.5mm plug would stick out about 4-5cm from the phone would work when phone is in your jeans pocket (which is where I keep my phone)

Put phone in your shirt pocket or back jeans pocket (transferring before you sit) ;) with adapter up, supporting shortest cord length.

I'm just getting sick of Apple making a lot of bad decisions (in my eyes).

  • soldering memory chips in devices
  • non standard SSDs
  • sticking to 8gb phones
  • single port on macbook
  • taking a long time to bring out upgrades to laptops/mac mini
  • hobling the mac mini
  • discontinuing aperture
  • rewriting software, putting out releases that remove most needed features and then slowly putting them back in (some of them)
  • not using standard ports (lightning vs usb-c)
  • lack of keyboard navigation (i've yet to figure out how to tab to different buttons in a dialog in OSX), I've never quite got used to Apples keyboard navigation compared to Linux/Windows.
  • high exchange rate is putting already expensive devices more expensive
  • expensive devices puts them out of reach of rest of family, I'm lucky I can afford Apple things
  • lack of waterproofing
  • lack of wireless charging
  • lack of configurability
Things I do like apple for:
  • Lovely looking devices
  • devices that just work
  • integration between devices

And if someone wants to listent to music while charging their iPhone?

It's the same problem but even worse with the MacBook. How does one backup to a Time Machine drive if they need to charge their MacBook? Apparently someone in a high place at Apple believes people drop everything they're doing while their devices charge.
Isn't Apples answer to everything, get a dongle :)

Forgot about adaptor being a cable with a dongle on the end of it, but still annoying.
I wear t-shirts which don't have pockets.

Not sure which is worse, that adapter, or the phone the anti-3.5mm jack removal crowd wants is:

Ah, no. The "anti-3.5 mm jack" crowd certainly don't want that. The iPhone never had all the features listed in the pic, so like many of your contributions here to this topic it doesn't make any sense.

But here, I have a picture for you. While it depicts the Mac Pro, as an analogy it should work as it seems the iPhone goes down a similar path:

Don't take this the wrong way but Bluetooth is wireless. You can still charge your phone with Bluetooth connected headphones. And because I don't have a MacBook I have to figure that Bluetooth is built in. It would be criminal if it's not.
I personally believe that wireless is the way to go. So I'm all for a new Bluetooth standard or even a new standard that brings far superior audio with extremely low power consumption. I'm one of those people that want to see connectors go. In addition to my iPhone 6S I also have a Samsung S7 and I find the wireless charging to be better than any power connector because I can just place my phone on a wireless pad in pitch darkness without fumbling for cables.

Bluetooth generally sounds like crap because low quality DACs are used in most affordable BT headphones.

Of course many people don't use BT headphones and obviously I was talking about what they will do if they want to listen to music while charging their phone. Don't take this wrong way, but if you had been thinking instead of kneejerking a defense of Apple then you would have known.

Also, don't take this the wrong way, but a BT backup HDD would be a really bad idea because BT 4's bandwidth is about 24 Mbit/s, or about 3 MB/s.

wow ..... that pic show little suprise so far ... will apple make big change at the event this fall ?

i start feel apple bring something special for everyone this time ,,, good job mr tim cook ..... dont bring us down ,,, hope on you ........

This seems like a really bad move... I hope Apple won't do it, because I don't want to have to use a bulky adapter unless it provides access to both listening to music and charging simultaneously. As the inevitable adapter is unlikely to have two lightning ports, I'd rather just use lightning headphones.

The iPhone 7 is looking like quite a poor update so I'm tempted to skip it, but 1GB of RAM is already annoying on my iPhone 6 and I'm sure it will get worse when iOS 10 comes out, so I can't wait for over another year to upgrade. The A8 processor is also showing its age (loading the Facebook app is so slow!) and I really want 3D touch. But I'll be happier when upgrading if they include lighting EarPods, and not just an adapter.

That my iPhone 4S chokes on the facebook app, and it slow on my 6plus, but runs facebook on safari just fine says more about the facebook app then the chip in the phone. There is no reason my iPhone 6 plus should struggle with a social media app when video editing apps run like a breeze.

The upside of an adapter is it'll work with a full size over the ear headphones. I have an external DAC but with it I can't use the phone function of the headphone, Apple likely would make the dongle input output

It's funny to see people here comment negative everytime evolution of a products starts at apple.

3.5" jack is old, it's deep and it's hard to clean, it takes a lot of space too in the inside of the phone.

And it's so rare people listening to music while charging the phone. I said it's rare, majority use headset not with the phone being charged at te same time, so i think the stereo speaker is better than the 3.5" jack.

The dongle apple brings will be beautiful, small and compact. Not gigantic.

It'll be interesting to see which way AAPL stocks go (dive?) when the 7 drops.

Something's fishy with these. The camera bezels of the big fony are completely different in design (not just shape) than the extruded camera bezel of the little fony.

It's almost unfashionable that Ivy would be able to sleep at night with such incongruencies.

I'm calling that pic a 3D render.

FAKE
