I dont understand what the big deal is...
Why not just leave the adapter on the end of the headphones?
You'd have to carry the headphones if you want to use them right?
This would be a great phone, if it ships with these specs. Much better than what I expected for the "7".

Really stupid.
Do you also think people with one ear can't detect stereo?
Regarding the dongle (which it appears is your main concern), Jobs was always a big proponent of removing ports/buttons. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that. Dongles were very much a thing in the Jobs era to assist in the transition away from certain ports. I doubt Jobs would have wanted to keep the headphone jack. I'm not a fan and not defending the decision, but it's a classic Apple/Jobs move.
Another dongle to lose or misplace.......brilliant.
When has apple ever shipped a device or system with a dongle. Or shipped a device that required use of a dongle?
I doubt this would happen. The iPhone 7 will probably ship with lightning headphones and a lightning charger. A dongle is probably an accessory for $5.
That adaptor looks too short for a 3.5mm jack and just think of the stress on the device, just sit down with jeans and snap - oops something just brokeHere's a thought. What if BOTH lightning enabled earbuds as well as a 3.5mm to lightning adapter are included in the box? (that way, anyone that has hardwired earphones that they absolutely LOVE have no reason to call Apple and complain?) (seems a lot cheaper than a phone call to me).
And, as for Octopus-like - why couldn't it be as straight-forward as the micro-usb to lightning adapters I get from monoprice?

Cue instructable with the twin cup air amplifier that separates the two channelsUnless your head is 4/5 of an inch wide and you hold the phone to touch your nose it won't sound any different.
my 2008 mazda doesn't have bluetoothCar = bluetooth as well as USB to lightning dongle (from your car manufacturer) - if you have a port in the car - if you do, it's charging and signalling in one.
Unless you're talking about a charging case, how are you playing pokemon go and charging at the same time? (on foot that is...if while driving, see point above). If walking, expect the charging cases to extend the lightning connector (hell, maybe they'll also break out a 3.5mm jack for you to patch into the lightning connector)![]()

Where is the logic in that a 3.5mm jack is not waterproof bit a lightning jack is?This rumor of lack of headphone jack kind of saddens me, but could it be an attempt to guarantee water proofing?
I might have, but changing cars sometime. But if Apple removes the headphone Jack, I may transition from iPhone to Android which for me also means replacing all my Apple gear with Windows/Linux etc...Heh...it's a micro-usb to lightning adapter (I was suggesting perhaps it could be as minimalist - others mentioned after the fact that Apple would be removing the DAC, so a dongle would need to include one...making it considerably more bulky).
But, none of us really KNOW what they're doing for an adapter/dongle yet, now do we? (so, deep breaths...have a drink)
Well, maybe (if you truly LOVE your 2008 Mazda and plan on keeping it for some time), you should get a 3rd party receiver that supports Car Play.Otherwise, there's other options (varying levels of expense and quality to add BT to your existing setup).
Umm...Linux, ok, but Windows?! Really? Ok....getting off topic. (and, yes, used Windoze for decades)I might have, but changing cars sometime. Can someone explain how a 3.5mm to lightning adaptor which including the adaptor and 3.5mm plug would stick out about 4-5cm from the phone would work when phone is in your jeans pocket (which is where I keep my phone)Maybe they will include both the lightning headphones and an adaptor and that's they reason for conflicting reports? Yeah I know this is Apple we are talking about but you never know.

I'm just getting sick of Apple making a lot of bad decisions (in my eyes).Umm...Linux, ok, but Windows?! Really? Ok....getting off topic. (and, yes, used Windoze for decades)
You just may (if you haven't) give the latest BT wireless offerings a listen before putting yourself through the turmoil of leaving the ecosystem.
Isn't Apples answer to everything, get a dongleAnd if someone wants to listent to music while charging their iPhone?
It's the same problem but even worse with the MacBook. How does one backup to a Time Machine drive if they need to charge their MacBook? Apparently someone in a high place at Apple believes people drop everything they're doing while their devices charge.
Forgot about adaptor being a cable with a dongle on the end of it, but still annoying.Put phone in your shirt pocket or back jeans pocket (transferring before you sit)with adapter up, supporting shortest cord length.
Not sure which is worse, that adapter, or the phone the anti-3.5mm jack removal crowd wants is:

Don't take this the wrong way but Bluetooth is wireless. You can still charge your phone with Bluetooth connected headphones. And because I don't have a MacBook I have to figure that Bluetooth is built in. It would be criminal if it's not.
I personally believe that wireless is the way to go. So I'm all for a new Bluetooth standard or even a new standard that brings far superior audio with extremely low power consumption. I'm one of those people that want to see connectors go. In addition to my iPhone 6S I also have a Samsung S7 and I find the wireless charging to be better than any power connector because I can just place my phone on a wireless pad in pitch darkness without fumbling for cables.
This seems like a really bad move... I hope Apple won't do it, because I don't want to have to use a bulky adapter unless it provides access to both listening to music and charging simultaneously. As the inevitable adapter is unlikely to have two lightning ports, I'd rather just use lightning headphones.
The iPhone 7 is looking like quite a poor update so I'm tempted to skip it, but 1GB of RAM is already annoying on my iPhone 6 and I'm sure it will get worse when iOS 10 comes out, so I can't wait for over another year to upgrade. The A8 processor is also showing its age (loading the Facebook app is so slow!) and I really want 3D touch. But I'll be happier when upgrading if they include lighting EarPods, and not just an adapter.
