Last quarter they sold 74 millions phones; isnt this an indication they have satisfied customers? According to Jd power iphone customer satisfaction is very high. Sure it would be great to get more ram and flash for the same price but that is not the way Apple rolls.

Apple is still popular and a lot of their new found success is in China. Maybe India is the next big market. China is not an open society and they take measures to do things such as disabling the Apple news app and stuff like that. Cheaper China android phones look good, especially if you can pick one up unlocked for a few hundred bucks. I won't buy a Chinese phone because my vote is !china. lol. (Not China for those who are not developers). Their phones are getting good although not top notch. If we continue to not increase wages in North America, then soon these will look more attractive.
Also, I can put Android on a whole whack of different ARM processors, which makes the Android experience more ubiquitous. Android is creeping in to many places unaware.
Apple is known for being very expensive. The SE which I have was $579 in Canada and does not have 3D Touch and other nice features. I could have had a minimalistic Asian android phone for less than 1/2 the price, some at 1/3 the price.

https://www.statista.com/chart/1999/iphone-sales-by-type-of-purchase/
What is really scary is the majority of sales is to those who already have iPhones. The new user sales is decreasing, 80% of sales are replacements and in a steady decline since 2012.

Personally, I've paid outright for a Z3 Sony, the IPhone SE, I can't imagine spending close to $1000 on any phone, it's just not a priority to me. Cellphone plans in Canada stink too... so you fork over $300 for the iPhone 6s then pay up around $100 a month on a substandard plan compared to other countries... yuck.

If the top apples were slightly cheaper, they would do significantly better.

I'd say the 4' screen is showing its age particularly compared to it's own younger (and larger) brethren. I feel like they could borrow a lot of the tech from the more recent phones while keeping the size.

I't s alittle bit like my macbook screen. I have a 2011 MBP and have no issues until my sister in law brought her rMBP over when visiting and boy, the difference is notable. It's not necessarily "throw my computer out the window" notable, but my next macbook, should I end up getting another macbook, will be retina (or probably better as I plan on having this another 2-3 years at least).

I get your analogy, but I disagree. I own a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, which is as good as a phone screen gets in my opinion, but I still look at an iPhone 5 or iPhone 6 screen and see a perfectly good quality screen. People only see an outdated screen because that's what they want to see. I say just deal with it.

In electronics in general, the longer you can hold off buying, when you do finally buy the item, it will "usually be better and at times cheaper then the previous year's version. Apple electronics are luxury goods so there will not be much of a decrease in price but the item will be better as each year into the future! Three years from now, completely new technology standard since Skylake CPU was release in 2015!
Perhaps it will be revolutionized but for what I do and what I use my processing power firing will be completely redundant and not necessary for me.

Sorry but I just don't see it that way. I can compare text alone between iPhone screens and notice the SE is lacking.

Frankly, we have had "good enough" technology for a while now. If everything is always left as good enough we won't ever see advancement. Comparing 1080p to the 4K standard is similar. Do you need the difference? Most probably not. But is the alternative to stay at 1080p forever, simply because it's "good enough"? That's the thing with technology. It's always pushing for what was impossible yesterday. We could get into the philosophical here and argue that any smartphone, even that which we saw a decade ago, isn't something anyone needs, even today!

I would absolutely welcome resolutions, particularly for the SE, but I do feel pushing for 4K on a handheld device seems pointless. At least for my eyes.

Most people that are near sided or have 20/20 vision can tell the video alone is not 1080p when playing a 4K video from YouTube or a music video or a 1080p movie!

I don't understand why it is not becoming mainstream though?

The size of the device is small enough, that resolution of those numbers doesn't give you much more fidelity. Your eye can only discern so many PPI, and going up to full 4K resolution on a device that small is like someone spending a ton of money on their gaming rig to up their FPS from 80 to 100. Your brain can't tell the difference.

Well, if you can't see the difference between QUAD HD display and iPhone 6S display, you should meet the ophthalmologist.

I just saw the Note 7 at Best Buy. Wow what a phone. The screen is much nicer than my 6S Plus. Makes my iPhone look like a phone from 2013.

But I hate android haha. Man I wish I could use iOS on the Note 7. What a sexy phone, high res screen, small bezels, and just sexy. The black and silver versions are both incredible looking.

Unless Apple goes with the existing technology like 1080p screen resolution instead of the 326ppi or 720i; it not innovation in Apple's marketing tool chest of words! Apple will eventually be forced into the 1080p screen but not going be soon! Apple been using the same screen resolution since 2009 - 4 or 4S iPhone.

It shows up watching videos and movies however, pretty clearly the difference even in 4" screen size!

It shows up just looking at texts. Whenever I handle my cousins 6 plus I can tell the screen has higher resolution than my 6s. I want the 7plus but only with increased screen resolution.

I think this will finally be the year that I jump ship and go with Samsung. From a design standpoint, they're lightyears ahead of Apple.

Sure, when you really pay attention it's noticeable. And I'm not against change, nor am I discouraging it, I just think that there are FAR more important things to improve in a phone. A few people have said that only people with bad eyesight can't tell the difference. My eyesight is as good as it gets and I still don't have a single problem with the screen on the iPhone. Frankly, I find the fact that Apple are being criticised for their screens quite sad.

The thing is, development isn't a vacuum. Increasing display resolution may have little to no bearing on other changes that may be made. The development teams for the display are likely not even the same folks working on other hardware features.

But, for the sake of argument, what others things do you think smartphones could improve in? I feel like we have reached peak with basically everything. The rest is up to discovering entirely new tech. (ie. some form of battery that packs much more energy into the same physical space).

I meant in the eyes of the consumer. They're letting things like resolution get in the way of the more important things.

As for the bold, I disagree. Apple is great at keeping battery life efficient, but thy are still pretty small. We're seeing phones with 3500mAh, and even as big as 5000mAh in phones the size of the 6 Plus.

What other things could be improved? Let's see. One of the things holding the iPhone back is charging. I am a sucker for fast charging. When we have phones that can charge in 10 minutes, I would be delighted, but I'm open for any improvements. Another thing I'd like to see is integration with your daily life. I think that Apple are doing a fantastic job with HomeKit, I'd love to see other OEMs follow suit.

So, charging, anything else?

FWIW I would also love faster charging. But I think you are projecting your opinions as reasons to say why other people are wrong here. You don't want better screens. No problem. Plenty do. And they're not any more wrong to want that than you are faster charging (which these same users may not make use of).

I went with the S7 Edge because it has a larger battery than the Note 7. This thing screams and the display is awesome.

I respect opinions, it's just an opinion I don't really understand. Sure, it makes the screen look a tiny bit nicer, but I don't understand the sheer number of people who want to see it happen.

Fast charging however, is extremely useful. You could plug in your phone, have a shower, or run a simple errand, and have your phone charged by the time you've finished, rather than waiting 1-3 hours for your phone to charge. We aren't quite at that point in charging technology, but in a couple of years I bet there will be phones capable of exactly that.

What phone charges from 0 to 100 in 10 minutes?

I didn't say there was one, I said that it's going to happen. Charging times are halving each year with Qualcomm's turbo charge, and we're even seeing technologies from Oppo, with phones that can charge in as quickly as 15 minutes. That's what I want.

I had an I6 .. changed to S6 .. changed to I6 again .. changed to S7 .. changed to I6S.

Yes, screens looks perfect on S6 and S7(2k) but looks in the same way than I6 or I6s , no differences for me or for 99% of the people.

it's more useful having better battery life and not 2k or 4k display.. 1080 is enough.

I'd like to say that the reason the resolution is so poor on the 6S plus is because it is so thin...but the Galaxy S7 is really thin and has a Quad HD screen. Maybe Apple feels you don't need it and it's cheaper to produce.
