If you are making a line in 2016 for an iPhone then you are weird and not with the times.

Exactly. It's not just the device, it's the experience. You don't just sit and stare at the sky for hours, as there is talking, photo's, holding peoples places as they go to the toilets, connecting with people over email, some of the facebook and forums even have a "Who's lining up at XXX" so you can chat while you are in line. Oh and the people you see in the city at 3am really needs to be seen to be believed

Yeah the device is great, but like you say you can watch a DVD on a kick-ass stereo and TV and have a great time, but it's just not the same as going to a live concert. I would not go to a live concert every time, but it is fun occasionally. Speaking of concerts, I remember some fun banter at the George St Sydney store between us lining up for the 5pm launch of one of the devices (iPad 2 maybe?), and there was a group lining up on the opposite corner that were there all day as well, lining up for tickets for some concert. They were teasing us all day, and we did the same to them. Since we were there as a family someone stayed in line and we took turns going over and getting them coffee and food, or holding their place while they went and got stuff.

We have not done it since the iPhone 5, as I skipped the 5S and got the 6 on a plan, skipped the 6S, and got the 7 on a plan, but I wish all those who do line up the best and hope they have a great time. Oh and it's less than 4 hours until the first people officially get their phones :)

you cant compare a live concert to waiting in line to get an iphone lol

look it's dorky and then there are those who are opportunistic to make $ for selling their spot in line.

These early birds could be laughing all the way to the bank by the time they get their iPhone 7 Plus. Part of the reason isn't simply excitement but taking advantage of being a capitalist. Go back in time when the Xbox 360 came out. They took advantage of the shortages during the holidays and ended up getting a $400 a console and sold it off for $600-$800 on eBay, easy.

The iPhone 7 Plus in jet black is the hot item to get especially for eBay resellers because the scarcity could be real. Samsung also messed up on their Note7. It could be months until a jet black iPhone Plus is in stock in most stores. You simply go after the most popular model if you plan to resell even if you don't plan to keep it. Early birds understand capitalism very well.

Line up, folks. Easy $200-$300 minimum for you just waiting in line. I would have done this for the Xbox 360 in 2005 if I knew I could've made double on it. This is no different than people buying concert tickets and scalping them for 2-3x more.

I agree.
1. You either don't have a life and your time isn't important.
2. You think it's cool to have the latest iPhone and really, it's not.

I don't get it.
They line up for something that if they just wait they can get with no effort.
After days in line, they smell, the people next to them smell.
As I said before, lemmings.

I don't understand waiting in lines for days. I mean I'm a huge apple fan and its fun to have the latest stuff but its like... I got work and school. Is this truly the definition of having too much time?

Totally agree. When this was the only way to get the iPhone, I waited in a line. It was a huge deal, to go from a Nokia to the iPhone. And they didn't ship it same day as store delivery.

But I'll have my phone before some of these guys and all I have to do is wait for the UPS guy to come. I'm lying in bed right now, tracking it on UPS. Technically I'm on line for it, just at my house.

I don't know, seems to capture the Zeitgeist.

because they could be doing something more valuable for their well being my friend.

Do they even know their body fat?

are they eating correctly? a newer iphone wont increase their quality of life.
You see, value is a subjective thing. Maybe this is valuable enough for them. I'll give you my example again. I consider myself pretty healthy and I still queued up once in my life. It's the experience that drags people.

Congrats btw - may i ask if you think you could have better used that time else where and perhaps something of value ?

how would you feel if your employees took 2 days off to stand in line for an iphone that if they waited a week or 2 they would have in their hands?

Yes I could have done something better but at that point I thought at least experiencing it once won't harm and it didn't. I enjoyed chatting with others, getting coffee from Apple employees and getting all excited and making noise, having fun with others. I think the whole experience is enjoyable. Having said that I have never done that again.

Well, by law employees get their annual leaves for the year, if they choose to take days off and go buy a phone, there's nothing I can or would say to be honest. It's their rights and they can choose to do anything with their annual leaves. I don't judge people who take the time off just to be a couch potato either.

Wait, let me guess. Vegan?

Wow, do you value your life on this earth so little that you will give 12 hours of it away for free. Check-out the Justin timberlake film "In Time" if you want to know where I am coming from..

Good day.
Are you just shilling for Justin?

Why do you exist on these forums? Is it simply just to troll?

Just because you're having a bad day doesn't mean you need to take a steaming load on everyone else.

im not trolling dude - a bunch of us are trying to understand what's exciting about waiting in line. Yes you meet people, you exchange emails, you arent friends but you may say hi passing each other on the street..

clearly your level excitement is tied to your apple launch experience hence why im asking what else you like doing for fun.

btw im a huge iphone fan. maybe bigger than you.

I'm actually quite curious how long the honeymoon phase or initial excitement for this iPhone will wear off on people? It's like blockbuster movies with these amazing box office numbers during opening weekend only for it to drop significantly the following weekends.

In movies, it is all about sprinting to your numbers. Fastest to get to a global billion after a few weeks. Then the theater showings drops significantly which is why we see them as digital downloads after three months. People have short memories nowadays.

At the end of this adventurous journey, it is still an iPhone. Another smartphone. A different color scheme is not going to change how you use it except maybe if it is raining or whatever. Back to complacency until the next rumors mill for the next iPhone begins. Another ferris wheel.

First week - "Best iPhone evah!"
Second week - "K, I'm bored."

Some people sit in coliseum parking-lots, drinking beer, cooking slabs of meat and wear costumes of their favorite gladiators. Using your logic, those individuals might be wasting their lives.

Maybe so. I've never done it, but it's possible that getting the phone isn't the point. If the point is the experience, and folks find it enriching, then more power to them. If the point is getting a piece of technology that'll be readily available in the coming weeks just so you can say you have it, or flaunt it over other people then yeah, I'd still say that's a waste of a lot of precious time you'll never get back that you could be doing things that DO enrich your life, or maybe someone else's. *shrug*

Good day.

With that philosophy why sleep? Why waste time posting on a forum? Life should be lived in a manner that is enjoyed. Enjoyed is up to the user.

It's the atmosphere--that's what's exciting about waiting in line. You meet people, you're really hyped up, and you get a new phone the next day. It's all about the excitement I guess.

I like really any boardsport where I'm standing sideways (snowboarding, flowboarding, surfing, skateboarding), basketball, and some occasional video games. I can also get excited about camping out for a phone--the fact that I get excited for it does not mean that the rest of my life is dull and boring or that I don't have any hobbies.

Just because I don't find excitement in what others find to be exciting doesn't mean that it's a waste of time for them. I don't hate on what others enjoy simply because I don't understand the appeal. If someone enjoys something, and they aren't hurting anyone else, I don't have a problem with it.

that sounds fair.

BTW are there any chicks waiting in line?

yah are you still friends with any of those folks?

How is that relevant. I've met tons of people throughout my life that I didn't become friends with. Does that make the time spent with them any less valid or important?

I get it, but it's kinda like going to comicon, you like it , but don't really want to be seen entering and leaving by the general public who think you are weird

I don't mind if people see me going to ComicCon. And I don't care if they think I'm "weird." It's so strange that people base their self-worth on other's opinions.

Idiots doing idiot things because they're idiots...

Idiots judging people they don't know because they're insecure.

because they could be doing something more valuable for their well being my friend.

Rather subjective. Some would say spending hours in an on-line forum is not valuable use of their time. We could be out saving puppies.

I can and did.

Love this reply.

Wow, do you value your life on this earth so little that you will give 12 hours of it away for free.

Add up the time you've spent in on-line forums. I'd bet it's at least an hour a week (that's a conservative estimate). That is around 52 hours a year. It would be silly for me to say you just gave that time away, because I don't know you, and have no idea what you get out of it.

I'll say again, I don't personally line up for an iPhone and don't plan to, but Christ, the level of pretentiousness in this thread is staggering. Let people make their own choice on how to spend their time. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, there is NO reason to be judgmental.

People have responded as to why they do it. And folks here STILL won't accept their answer. Incredible.
