They did that with the MacBook 2 years ago and the internet practically crucified Angela Ahrendts... "how dare they put something on display and not let me buy it!" LOL... yep I said that.

But seriously, I wish they'd cut down on display units... most stores have about 40 phones on display... x 500 Apple Stores, that'd be about 20,000 additional customers who could have their pre-orders launch day.

Do understand the how dare they put something on display and not let me buy it! line but for a device that is so personal as phone, I would never want to buy it with out having scene it. I was think of the new Jet Black, there have been comments that it shows finger prints also you can't judge a new surface like that from photos, you need to see it in person. I guess part of being an Apple early adopter is that you trust Apple that you new product is great.

Shipping display units to stores before the iPhone goes on sale wouldn't take away stock from buyer. Those store will get the display units either way, just a week earlier or later. Store wouldn't need a 40 units, just one or two of each color/size combinations. I do agree that store may not need so many on display, but once that initial rush is over and the phone isn't is short supply that cost to Apple to have more display units is very little.

These people are iPhone resellers. They are waiting to buy phones at full price without carrier activation (which you can not reserve online), so they can ship them to their home country. They are paid handsomely as a reward for getting as many phones as they possibly can on launch day.

Not defending them or anything, but I get about 25 days a year to take off - a lot of companies are like that too. If I don't use them I lose them after a year - I always lose 10 or so.
Yeah but most normal people would spend some of those 25 days in the Bahamas or something, not sitting on a pavement waiting for a phone.

Guarantee most of these campers are resellers so this 2-3 camping is easy money for them. Right now back in my home country they are ready to pay $3000 for a iPhone 7 Plus in Jet Black. My cousin back in my home country has a phone shop and told me if I was able to get my hands on some to send him.

To me, this behavior is just ridiculous. It's right on par with people camping out the night before Black Friday. I mean seriously people, what the hell is wrong with you? Is it THAT imperative that you get this phone right on launch day? If you don't get one will your life be forever changed? Is the phone you have right now so bad that it needs replacing? I just think people's priorities are in the wrong place. Pretty sad

The last time I waited in line longer than 3 hours for something was opening night of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

And we all know how THAT turned out.

Every day that passes I get less excited about the phone. Sure I'll be hyped when I get it but after 30 minutes I'm gonna realize that it's the same phone as my plus. Who knows I might have a change of heart but right now I'm just whatever about it haha

Any thoughts on people screaming at a tv screen at people they don't know running around with a ball?
Yep;
It’s a game. Just a game. I might appear aloof for saying this but jeez, I think they need to get some perspective. Cos at the end of the day it’s a game. Just a game.

Its great that people are finally starting to line up. If my phone was not coming on Friday I would have lined up too, but for my other 2 phones which have not shipped yet I am going to stand in line early in the morning to see if I can get both. I lined for the first time during the iPhone 6/6+ launch and I got to meet some nice people too.

Aren't these people wasting their time? I just read on 9to5mac that there will be limited to no stock for walk ins, only for reservations.

I read that too, but I bet a few iPhones will be available for walk ins. I suppose they'll be very limited in numbers and models like jet black will be very hard to get without reservation.

its ridiculous . its the iphone7, like 10 years later and people still need to camp out for a phone? is it just the cool thing that major apple fans do?

I've done it once, for the iPhone 5s launch. Waited in line for 12 hours... Never. Again. Can't even imagine doing it for 48 hours.

I don't understand. Why did you even do it the first time? You could have just ordered online and got it delivered to your doorstep on launch day like I have for the iPhones i wanted. My iPhone 7 coming fri 16th by post. Already got texts from DPD.

12 hours in a line? Never in my life would I do that for anything.

I guess at the end of the day for me, the experience of ordering it online for pick up (or just going straight to the store) on any regular day and have a top notch shopping experience and being in and out in fifteen minutes is far supreme to going through the hassle of waiting in lines for days.

Ignoring any other argument of time wasting, it just seems like a headache dealing with stock issues, crowds, activation errors launch days may invite.

For example I got my Apple Watch a few months after the initial launch, and it was an awesome experience. I went to the store, someone asked me if I needed anything. Said I wanted an apple watch, yada yada yada, I was out in 10 mins. Awesome. I even was able to return it for a different color a few days later with no issues. Two unboxing experience for the price of one yay! ;)

Watches are not phones but you get the idea. I think that if you missed the initial preorder window of buying online at midnight for shipping (which I have done and is great also), thats ok! Just wait for it to ship later, or pick up in store later. Try other merchants if they have stock as it comes available. Now word is they are completely out of stock for Pluses. Use your time more effectively - work more to pay for that phone, volunteer, heck binge watch a show on netflix would be more productive (and comfortable) than WAITING FOR DAYS FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF GETTING A PHONE.

But anyways thats just me. Best of luck to all iPhone buyers out there.

12 hours in a line? Never in my life would I do that for anything.

I had, but only to be on the front row for concerts and it was worthwhile.

The only time I had to queue for an iPhone was back in 2010 for iPhone 4, but it wasn't day one in fact it was more than a month after it hit the shelves in my country. I'm talking about less than an hour, but I had to wait.
In fact I don't like to buy an iPhone at day one, especially if it has a brand new design like iPhone 6. On day one I usually go to the AS just to have a look at the new models, they I chose the one I like best and go buy it on day 2 or the following week
