These people are iPhone resellers. They are waiting to buy phones at full price without carrier activation (which you can not reserve online), so they can ship them to their home country. They are paid handsomely as a reward for getting as many phones as they possibly can on launch day.
Not all of them are. We did the lineup for the 4, 4S, 5 and the first 2 iPads because we could due to work commitments. Now I don't bother, but they were fun times and I did enjoy them.

Waiting in line and not getting the phone you wanted now? Wow that would suck if you wanted a plus model tomorrow and they don't have them. I guess we will find out in about 12 hours when Apple in Australia open their doors

I waited in line for 4 hours for my Tesla Model 3 because it was the difference between getting it in 2017 and getting it in 2018.

Why would you wait in line for 48 to shave ~160 hours off the time it takes to get your iPhone?
Spot on. I had my share of waiting in line for hours, but it's about the ROI of my time.

I don't understand. Why did you even do it the first time? You could have just ordered online and got it delivered to your doorstep on launch day like I have for the iPhones i wanted. My iPhone 7 coming fri 16th by post. Already got texts from DPD.

12 hours in a line? Never in my life would I do that for anything.

There were no preorders for the iPhone 5s. Trust me. I rather have done so. My iPhone 4s no longer had a working lock button and the battery wouldn't keep a charge. Kind of needed a new phone ASAP. The ship date for the iPhone 5s was 5-7 days off the bat. You literally could not order a phone online until launch day.

You don't consider socializing, fun?
socializing with the person in line next to you about an iphone is fun?

Or posting on Mac Rumors to run down people who wait in line. I still think Apple should do the online reservation thing TBQH.

There are many things people do that are a poor usage of time. Don't get too high and mighty. I'm sure we can find things you do that are a poor waste of time.

i have one for you. I'm on macrumors.com responding to you.

Haha we don't hang out or anything but I've seen a few of them around town and we still recognize each other and say hi
That's neat.

What else do you do for fun ?

Has there ever been a line for an android phone? Has an android phone ever sold out of retail? (I honestly don't know)

I really don't get why people are being so harsh on those who like to wait in line. I've sat in line on opening day before (not camping, though). You do it more for the experience. It's fun to be there with others who are excited and share the same enthusiasm. If people have the means and ability to do it then that is their choice. They have my support and I hope they have a great time!

fun? like we are having a blast fun? or like fun - i hope someone talks to me fun?

I bet you that for the 2017 iPhone it will be a lot more people waiting in line if that phone is really going to "look" different than the past 3 iPhones.

Yup, considering all it took this year was a jet black option for fans to line up and have them sellout.

Not into Apple products but love seeing people line up for it. Rather fun experience. The console launch campouts died on me once the iPhone was released. Rarely anyone lined up for Xbox One and PS4 in 2013.

I think this type of stuff will last forever and ever with Apple iPhone launches as long as smartphones are still being used in our lifetimes. Bigger than Star Wars midnight showings!

Good time to use those lawn chairs, tents, and build camaraderie with random strangers who get excited at the same things as you. At least it isn't as chaotic as the rat race called Black Friday.

I really have no words for this... its unbelievable that people are still doing this line thing.
It's more like a annual ritual for some apple enthusiasts. I've gone past those days. Having said that, I only tried to queue up once and by the time I got to see the actual store they were all sold out. Never tried again. It's fun though, you make new friends. It's like an apple carnival.

Why are people shocked every single year at this?

Because it's either getting more of an artform for Apple, or their supplies are getting tighter and demand is increasing more than they expect.

I don't remember supplies being this tight in previous years, so either the demand had increased a lot or production volumes have dropped substantially.

Heh I was thinking the same thing but don't all of us human beings do something that someone else would
consider a colossal waste of time? Heh kinda like being an android user and coming to mac rumors to run
down the iPhone....WHy :) but hey it's their life :)
Ha ha ha. Nailed it.

Too much assumption right there sir. I stood in the queue for my 5S and I'm a director of a company. No career job I see... Hmm...

I have met company owners, real estate salesmen, people who have travelled to Australia to get the first release of a phone. We have also met single parents, families, grandparents and in one case I gave my seat up to a 70+ (I think she was 73) year old lady who was there to get a phone for her grandsons birthday.

Exactly, I genuinely think it's more for the festive feeling than the actual device. It was the device back in the days. Nowadays it's just an annual event like any other music festival.

Unathletic and confused?! How's that relevant?!

because they could be doing something more valuable for their well being my friend.

Do they even know their body fat?

are they eating correctly? a newer iphone wont increase their quality of life.

Congrats btw - may i ask if you think you could have better used that time else where and perhaps something of value ?

how would you feel if your employees took 2 days off to stand in line for an iphone that if they waited a week or 2 they would have in their hands?

Never understood why people line up for this stuff. I always ordered my iPhone and had it delivered to my house while i have my morning tea. So much better.

However now i have to go to the store to sign up for the AUP. If i can get a reservation.
