The standard 7 may be easier to grip. But I agree. These phones are too slippery and have been since the 6.
The rounded edges don't help to the extremely slippery aluminum body.

Best option for me is a transparent skin on the body and the screen, it's as close as you can get to going naked without worrying about scratching.
I have a transparent skin on mine and it's annoyed me from the first second I put it on. It also catches so many tiny clothing fibers (dust?) along the seams/edges -- it drives me nuts. I think I might just go naked.
Other folks might have had better luck.
I used to drop my 5 a lot. When I thought about my reasoning for holding it the way I did (which resulted in me dropping it) I realized it was because I wanted to avoid putting fingerprints on my screen. The people who are complaining about how slippery the iPhone 6 and 7 are those who are afraid to hold it. I don't know how to describe it, but you just need to grab it and hold it normally. If you are afraid and cautious, and try too hard to hold it gingerly, you may drop it. Just grab it and hold it naturally. I have tried a bunch of cases, and none of them are satisfactory for me.

Once I realized that it changed everything for me. I can wipe fingerprints off my screen and it costs me nothing. Crack a screen, dent a corner and it's going to be a lot more expensive. Now I don't care about putting fingerprints on it because I want to prevent accidents.
Just adding to this is all…
I bought the silver because it doesn't show scuffs and scratches. Btw, how is the camera lens holding up? I heard it scratches easily.I've had my matte black iPhone 7 for about a week. I initially had the Apple silicone case on it, but I really missed seeing the beauty of the phone's design and materials. So for the last two days, I ditched the case and have been carrying my iPhone 7 naked. I am reasonably careful, but I am not babying it by any means. And using this phone naked makes a world of a difference for me. It's so light, sleek, and beautiful. And the matte black finish does not seem to scratch at all. I was seriously considering getting the jet black, but I think I made the right choice.
Not sure where you heard that. You heard incorrectly. Don't believe everything see on the internet.I bought the silver because it doesn't show scuffs and scratches. Btw, how is the camera lens holding up? I heard it scratches easily.
I also tried the transparent skins in the past. They still totally change the feel and look of the device, and the corners and edges get nasty dust and lint deposits. No thanks.

There have been MANY comments showing that the Matte Black is more slippery than the JB, so yes, it is a big deal. This thread is specific to the Matte Black. What's the big deal. Naked jb here.
They're all slippery dude.
The jet black is nowhere near as slippery.
The leather case looks and feels like it belongs on the iPhone.
How do you naked iPhoners hold it while typing with 2 hands? That's the scariest part for me. When it's naked, it feels like it's just balancing there and at any moment I could be bumped or just simlpy fumble it.
With the leather case on it, not only is it protected from scratches and short drops, but it adds enough heft, grip and comfort that I think it's worth having.
If I need two hands to type something then it's importance has shifted enough to require a computer. The leather case looks and feels like it belongs on the iPhone.

I found it a bit slippery so got a silicone clear case on it.
