The jet black is nowhere near as slippery.

I don't care how grippy the JB is. Even if you handle it with kid gloves, are ultra careful with it, and even if you put it in a case, it will be marked up and covered with scratches. The matte black, on the other hand, is quite scratch resistant and looks great without a case. As for slipperiness, you just need to hold it the right way and avoid drops onto concrete. Once you are not afraid of holding it caseless, it's fine.

I've had my matte black iPhone 7 for about a week. I initially had the Apple silicone case on it, but I really missed seeing the beauty of the phone's design and materials. So for the last two days, I ditched the case and have been carrying my iPhone 7 naked. I am reasonably careful, but I am not babying it by any means. And using this phone naked makes a world of a difference for me. It's so light, sleek, and beautiful. And the matte black finish does not seem to scratch at all. I was seriously considering getting the jet black, but I think I made the right choice.

Nice, good to hear. I'm not brave enough and use a skin on mine. I find that I slide the phone around a lot when it's laying down on a desk or other furniture, and I'm afraid of even micro scratches. My screen is naked though and still pristine. I'm jealous, to be able to feel the nice matte surface every time you grab your phone must be nice.

So here's an update after my initial post. Absolutely loving going caseless with my matte black iPhone 7. No issues whatsoever, and no scratches at all. My iPhone is still pristine. And after I got used to just holding it confidently and not babying it, I will never go back to covering this beauty with any case. Using it the way it was meant to be used.

The matte black is nice at first since it feels new. But now I feel like it's a little dull and boring. Looking back I think space gray is more interesting

Solid black trumps any other color for me.

If I am bored with anything about my iPhone 6s+ it's the Space Gray color. I only have that because it's the closest Apple would let you get to black (at the time).

Using my Mb 7+ since launch day and it is perfect, however i see permanent fingerprints marks and smudges on back in certain light, which I can't wipe off, I do have sweaty palm and this makes it worse.
So using case first time ever on any phone, i think ph has much better hold with apple silicone case and don't know how long i will last with case and go caseless again.

I perusme these marks were expected as you would see on any black laptop!

There have been MANY comments showing that the Matte Black is more slippery than the JB, so yes, it is a big deal. This thread is specific to the Matte Black.

I have a Matte Black and it's rarely used without the Apple Leather Case. Even with AppleCare+, I'm afraid to go case-less.
This is me too. Thing I want to ask, is what's the deal with AppleCare +? Like, if I use my phone naked and it gets all scratched up, how easy is it getting a new one? Does it have to be damaged to a certain degree for Apple to give you a new phone?

I mainly use the Apple leather case and keep on going back to it time after time. I like the look of clear cases but hate the feel of the plastic. I have a Caudabe case that's nice and close to naked but feel if I use that I may as well not use anything! And then there's sleeves. Mmm, sleeves. A bit "fumbley" and like just hiding you phone away. Anyway, AppleCare plus?

Apple does not replace phones with cosmetic damage. Only damage that prevents the phone from operating normally.

If you have the latter kind of damage, make an appointment, they replace the device and you're done. If you scratch the back up and want to replace it because of that they won't.

One other thing to note. Some people over the years have assumed that Apple will replace their device with an upgrade around the time a new device is launched. Their assumption is that there is a new device and that Apple doesn't have stock of the old device. Apple never does this though and they are always sorely disappointed for damaging a perfectly good device only to get back the same device they damaged.

Apple always replaces like for like - exactly the same thing you turn in.

This makes sense. So "we"'still need to look after our phones (use a case) and only if they are damaged and not useable, will they replace (so don't use a case)?! ...

It's a tool, not a fashion statement.

Have a matte black iphone 7 +, and i too feel like it's a bit too slippery. Got a apple leather case and i feel like it's a perfect match. Not too bulky, feels good in the hand, and (if i put it up to my nose) has that nice leather smell.

Going on 15 months with my launch weekend 6s+. No case. No dents, no dings, no scratches, screen is still perfect.

That said, using a case (or not) is a personal choice. If you choose to use one, your reasons for doing so are as valid as my reasons for not using a case. To each his own. :D
I don't use a case but I do install screen protectors. My only routine is to have something to set the phone on at my usual daily locations, a book, notepad anything soft to not have the lens on a hard surface. Those few times nothing is available, I just set it screen down on the protector. My bomb proof case is AppleCare plus.

As pointed out in post #63, AppleCare plus might not be that good a "bomb proof" as expected.

Yep, I gave up on trying to keep my phone naked.

Too, much worrying and the like. Tech 21 Check pattern is how I'm currently rolling.

I fail to be enamored by the "looks" of my iPhone and need it to work like a tool. My 7+ is far too slippery for my tastes and a case is a must.
