I don't doubt this will eventually happen but you have to wonder how will one do a force restart on a hung up device with no home button? Androids you take the battery out and boom done, but iPhones you can't do that.

Sleep + volume down + volume up?

So if you remove the physical button, don't you then end up having to commit screen real-estate to providing the same functionality? I mean iOS would still need a way to go back to your home screen, and if you put that functionality on-screen, it kind of has to always be there, right? Is there really an advantage?

Yea gods. The Keynote iPhone video that Sir Jony Ive produces when the Apple engineers give him the ability to design an iPhone with no visible buttons on the front will have to be rated 'X' it's going to ooze so much sexiness.

Most newer android devices have internal batteries this time around..

I am saying the 7 will still have the home button while the 8 will lack it.

Apple keeps the same form factor for two years. The iPhone 7 gets the new design and the 7S will have upgraded internals only but look the same. So I agree, if it doesn't appear in the 7 probably won't until 8 two years later.

Not if it recognizes force touch in a corner or something even if other stuff is on the screen. Or two quick force touches as meaning "home" anywhere on the screen.

I dunno. If you make it gesture-based, well then you could do that now, 3D Touch or no. And that would obfuscate a key part of the operating system... in other words, if somone is using an app and has to ask themselves, "How the heck do I get out of this app?" - well that's not very Apple-y.

True. But at least you can add functionality to the left and right of the "button"

I actually like the home button ... then again, I don't use Siri either ... kinda dread the day where they make you use Siri.

I pick my phone up with the home button ... have for years.

I actually disagree with this. Touch-ID 2nd generation was just introduced, so I doubt Apple would not reuse it in the iPhone 7. I would say the iPhone 8 is a much more likely candidate for a home button-less phone.

Yeah, personally I don't mind the home button. Though to shrink the bezel they can always make the home button on the side like the volume and mute switch. That's assuming they can do fingerprint recognition over glass.

Exactly. The home button can simply be a physical button on the side of the phone.

just shrink the top down and would be happy. I like having a home button, just change the shape to shrink the bottom down.

I think it's pretty clear that with the introduction of 3D Touch the home button is on its way out. Apparantly you can get back to the home screen with a "Force Touch" on the 6S and 6S+ so what good is the home button now?

So my prediction is that the iPhone 7 redesign will lose the home button and make the footprint of the devices MUCh smaller. Can't wait. Flame away.

Touch ID, accessibility access, guided access, activating Siri for those who don't use Hey Siri

It would be cool if they took out the home button and used the apple logo for touchID. Thumb on sleep/wake button and index finger on apple logo to unlock

I doubt the home button is going anywhere soon. It's an iconic piece of the iPhone and it has tons of functionality that would be difficult to replace without a huge learning curve. It's used for Touch ID, reachability, multitasking, Siri, accessibility and of course getting back to the home screen. My expectation for the iPhone 7 is that the home button will be similar to the trackpad on the retina MacBook in that it will not physically press down, but will provide haptic feedback that gives off that same feeling as a click.

Defeating many cases in the process. Having to pick your phone up to unlock it. Won't ever happen, a regression of impracticality.

I can for sure see this happening with the next iPhone. The Touch ID will likely integrate with the screen and with the addition of 3D Touch I'm sure a home button isn't necessary. Maybe we will go back to a iPhone 5 like size with the larger 4.7" screen
