I disagree a little. I just bought a used 128GB 7 with AppleCare for $500. Next year I can probably sell it for $350, so a $150 loss.

If I bought a new 8 this year, it would cost $850 plus tax just for the 256GB model and no AppleCare. I can sell it next year for $500. That is a $350 loss.

Yep... and that $200 difference is $17 a month which is about $0.57 a day. To me that's worth it to have an 8 over a 7.

I totally see where the 7 is "a better buy" but in the long run the difference is chump change when it comes to having the extras you get with the 8 series.

Simple, the price is much cheaper, and the iPhone 8 does not have many new features over the 7.

If you want wireless charging, sure get the 8, but other then that and a slightly improved camera or CPU, the 7 is a better buy.

I would say the 8 is a better buy at the lower storage models. The lowest priced 7+ model has 32G storage while the lowest price 8+ has 64G. So for $130 more , not only do you get the better processor, camera etc, you get double the storage.

There is no real difference for the average iPhone user between the 7 and 8. My brother has the 6 Plus and he recently dropped it hard. The vibrator does not vibrate correctly. He was looking at getting the 7 Plus since there is very little he needs from the 8 or X and the 7 is significantly cheaper.

Changes on the 8:
- A11
- camera upgrade
- fast charging
- wireless charging
- glass back
- True Tone

But these are all basically minor “nice to haves,” except the glass back, which exists for the wireless charging but makes the 8 thicker and heavier than the 7 (and more likely to suffer serious damage in a drop). It’s not like the processor, camera, or display are weak points for the 7. At $150 more starting price, the 8 doesn’t offer much value. For me, the tricky thing would be storage, since I’d be at 128 for the 7 but 64 for the 8, which makes the price difference awfully small.

You can't compare depreciation on a used 7 to a new 8. If you bought a new 7 for $650, you'd probably be able to sell it for $300 next year, maybe $350. So your loss, apples to apples, is about the same or within a tank or two of gas or a couple crappy meals at Applebees.

Save on the front, lose on the back. Works out basically the same, so why buy the older phone?

Exactly.
The average consumer doesn't need the 8.
The discerning consumer wouldn't buy the 8!
Truth be spoken, the "average consumer" doesn't "need" the 7. Or even the 6, for that matter. If you are going to walk features forward and say "yeah, what about...." then you might as well walk all the way up the X. If you are a "discerning consumer" then I'd think that you'd want the latest/best camera, fastest processor, better display and wireless charging to go along with all the other features that are in the 7 (and 6, and 5 and...). Unless, of course, you want to bin various classifications of consumers and ascribe a phone model cost benefit proposition to each. But somehow, I don't think that is really your interest.

I’m guessing iPhone 7 outsold the iPhone 8 because the iPhone 8 is overpriced.
The iPhone 8 was on sale for 9 days during Q3 and hard core fans were waiting for the X. According to Apple the 8 series has consistently outsold the 7 series since launch.

8 has a more fragile back than 7 which is metal. I am considering returning my X for several reasons - one being the fragile nature of the glass back. I do like that my iPhone 7+ is not as fragile and I remember all those shattered iPhone 4/4S back panels.
Why not just use a case?

I agree with some elements there.. I did imply that the discerning consumer would go for X or wait for X+
For me 8 sits in a strange place with futuristic pricing and an outdated design (although it still may fit the bill for some)
As I have said credit to apple for giving the choice...

On that note, it did fit my bill and I’m very happy with the 8 plus.

Its cheaper and very similar in design and spec. It’s likely outselling the X too as many consumers are realising you don’t have to pay close to a grand or more for a decent smartphone in 2017.

If the numbers didn’t come from Apple then it’s all a guess.
Not necessarily. I’ve found our retailers are a lot more transparent with their sales figures, especially here in Europe. We get a pretty good idea what products are selling faster and the iPhone 7 is the biggest selling iPhone of the past 7 weeks here. If I was looking to upgrade I’d have jumped on the cheaper 7! 🙂

It's also comparing three complete months of iPhone 7 sales with only a week and a half of iPhone 8 sales (two and a half weeks if you include pre-orders).

On the earnings call on the 2nd November Tim Cook said "In the last week and a half of September, we began shipping iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to customers in more than 50 countries. They instantly became our two most popular iPhone models, and have been every week since then." which means they've actually been outselling the iPhone 7 and 7S since the day they went on sale.

Yes this exactly! You guys can argue all day about how much of an upgrade the 8 is over the 7, but that doesn’t change the fact that the 8 is selling in higher quantities. You can’t compare 3 months to 1.5 weeks and say “look the 7 sold more!”

Sure maybe the 8 isn’t worth it for an upgrade from the 7, but for 5s/6/6s owners looking to upgrade, getting an 8 for $100 more provides a much better value for many consumers. Especially with the monthly payment model. Then you’re only paying like another $7 a month or something

I guess I was trying to get at iPhones ordered directly Apple will not be reflected. I believe Apple did say the i8 is outselling the i7.

The average person needs to be able to see differences to justify a greater expense. The iPhone 8 and even more so the 8+ has practically the same internals and capabilities as the X, but it looks like the 7. So most people will say, "why don't I just buy this one (the 7)? It's the same and it costs less."

I also know some people who were coming from older phones like a 5s and they figured that the 7 would be a huge enough step up and that the 8/X would be overkill. That's another factor as well. As smartphones become ridiculously powerful, the flagships become overkill for a lot of people, so last year's model is fine.

The difference between the 8 (64GB) and 7 (32GB) is $50...

Looks like it is $150.

My mother in law just upgraded from the 6 Plus to the 8 Plus and said she hardly notices a difference lol. I tried to get her to buy my iPhone 7 Plus, which is in mint condition, for half of what I paid for it, but she was convinced the 8 Plus was the way to go. Pretty sure she wouldn't have been able to tell the difference, especially if she said she hardly notices a difference between the 6 Plus and 8 Plus.

Eh, but a lot of people think 32 GB is not enough, 64 GB is fine, and 128 GB is overkill, so for those people, the real price difference between the 7 and 8 is $50 since they would have to get the 128 GB if they went with the 7.

I honestly think people were just fatigued by the same design for 4 years. It doesn't even matter how fast the 8 is, and wireless charging isn't a wow factor. Plus the cloud over the release of the 8 because of the X.
I’m pretty sure the 7 outselling 8 is purely the X. Most people don’t see this as the same design for 4 years because it isn’t. Similar yes. But the X has such an appeal.

True, but @BeefCake 15 was saying that the difference between the 64GB 8 and the 32GB 7 was only $50. I was just putting out the correct numbers which is $150 between those models.
