If there is no mute switch, get over it. This is the direction we're heading in. Apple's main target is create a phone with no bezels (or make them as small as possible) and with no buttons on it at all. It'll only get worse for you kind of people. Seriously, get over it. You'll buy it anyway once you see the promotion pictures on Apple's website.

I can see no basis for your "Apple's main target is create a phone with no bezels (or make them as small as possible)" statement - Apple is way behind all their main rivals in that regard and this design makes no change to that, it's just removing the headphone jack and mute switch for...? "Thinness"?? Even if this is an intermediate step - why should customers buy it, removing things for where the next generation of phone is headed, but with last generation tech and form factor? If I buy it it'll only be because my iPhone 6 is getting old and the battery dying.

I don't know how many times I've said this but they are planning minor changes this year because next year we'll see a WHOLE NEW design.

Something doesn't add up:

Both seem to be of the same size, yet one is 7, while the other one is 7 Plus. Then what is the smaller 7 called?

This leads me to believe there will be 7 Pro in the lineup as well, which this leak actually shows. We just don't know it yet, thinking that it's 7 Plus.

You are looking at it wrong. Both are taken at different times in different places, and one is held closer than the other. Thats why they look the same size.

Be careful what you wish for. While we're both joking (I think), this next phone is kicking out a highly ubiquitous feature and apparently preserving it's functionally with an add-on adapter of some kind. "Thinner" colliding with physics limits will continue to beg for consideration of other things currently built inside to get jettisoned to adapters too. I really could see the camera and battery becoming accessory items due to the relentless press of "thinner" above all else.
Oh I'm definitely joking. When I read your post I thought "Ack, don't give them any ideas!" Unless they really could do engineer this modularity in a way that produces a sleek attractive end result when all the variations are assembled.

But going off of the incredibly frustrating maddening experience of trying to keep track of their inventory availability for the Apple Watch and its accessories, I'm not eager for them to pursue this direction with their iPhones.

I can't say I care for what they've done with the pro end of their laptop lineup, either. I don't mind them having "Air" variants of laptops for customers who need that level of minimalistic portability. But for those of us who needed and appreciated having all the features and power in the pro designation, which I did when I was into gaming and designing custom content for games, they went too far stripping laptops down. I am keeping my older MacBook Pro operational for as long as I can. I will go back to using it when I have the time to return to some old hobbies.

I hope someone is playing with us because the lack of a mute switch would be immensely problematic. There are many places in which people need to quickly and quietly silence their phones -- or where they need to visually confirm it is silent without lighting the screen.

I think the non-plus looks fine – it’s cleaner than the 6 and 6s. I think the plus ‘pill’ looks terrible.

One has a transparent cut-out of the Apple logo, the other has not? Doesn't seem legit it you ask me. But I have no doubt that the final design will be very close to what we see here.

Same design as 6, still with ugly ridiculous plastic white antenna lines, no headphone jack. Looks like it'll be the worst iPhone yet.

Scuttlebutt has informed me the following things about the next gen iPhone:
The iPhone 7 Plus will be called iPhone Pro.
No headphone jack. Adapter to be determined.
Dual camera, one wide angle, one zoom. Seems to provide better motion stability, sharper image.
3 GB of RAM
True Tone sensor!
DCI-P3 color gamut!
No mute switch (need to check this aspect again)
Space gray is still the same space gray but that can change.
One thing that is possible for 2016 is the use of OLED in this year's iphones or another Apple product that isn't the watch.

No mute switch? Possibly no headphone jack? Makes it really likely that this thing will be water resistant or perhaps water proof to a shallow depth. Worth it! As progress marches forward and these devices are ever thinner, physical buttons and switches will be slowly phased out. It's easy enough to toggle with Control Center. Most people who work are likely to have their phone muted most of the time anyway. Then consider the rise in smart watches that notify you and why would you ever need a ringer in the first place? For those who still use it, you can quickly toggle with control center. Perhaps they'll build in a 3D Touch shortcut for it on the lock screen. Who knows, but this was bound to happen at some point. At least waterproofing is a good reason, if true.

Who cares what it looks like? It will get shoved into a case just like every other iPhone before it.

Yes, we know! So why would Apple expect us to spend hundreds of dollars on a gap filler product? It just smacks of greed - "we couldn't get anything decent done in time so here's a work in progress for you all to give us a few more billion in profits for". From a company that made its name on fantastic product and design this is really weak - forgivable if they cut the price but not going to happen is it?*

*quote fail... Can't fix it on my iPhone.

Well I went to Samsung Note series after the iPhone 4 and I'm looking to go back to iPhone for a bit. At this rate, it makes more sense for me to just get the 6s after this phone comes out in september since it will be reduced price. Unless Apple has some killer wireless charging option on the 7, what's the point for people like me who just want to be back on iOS? At least the headphone jack and mute switch are there. If I want to use bluetooth headphones I have that option as well.

Are iPhone 6s users getting screwed out of dual lens and dock connector just because of limited space inside the 6s shell?
I find it annoying that the + size phones are the ones that get all the benefit. Why not offer something for the 4.7" as well.

staying with the note 7 which looks like a good option this year in fairness.

Yeah I love the feature on my S7 edge

going forward there will be less options for buttons i imagine

You mean the Apple that has made more money than it ever did under Steve? Yeah that Tim Cook and his ridiculous success!

Thing is, Apple doesn't have anyone better to take over. Cook was Steve's chosen successor. They won't come with more power than that.

He's made the company boring, ever more greedy, and the products disappointingly predictable. He's playing the company safe and merely keeping it chugging along rather than making any attempt to be at the forefront of technology that Steve Jobs' Apple was. Just how I see it. But I'm not dumb enough to think Tim Cook is going anywhere anytime soon.

See, these are what you call negative qualities. Negative qualities don't yield runaway success. If any of these things were true, their success would not be.
