I really do not like the protruding camera at all. Still using a 6... if performance becomes an issue with the 6 I would likely buy an SE at that point if these renderings/pics are accurate.

The Nubia Z11 is what an iPhone should've been. But with Jonathan Ive you will get the same boring design over and over and over again. And the clueless Tom Cook isn't the right man to lead a company like Apple.

I know its subjective, but those look like crap. How many seams and sections does that phone have? it looks like a concept phone from the early 2000s, especially the the Z9, the Z11 looks like a iPhone 6 with just more panels and less bezel.

I hate having no mute switch on my iPad, but having none on the iPhone?!?!

Blistering barnacles.
Blistering barnacles--:D I'll have to remember that one!

I've learned to adjust to it being missing on the iPad. I don't like that I can no longer mute or lock rotation using the switch, but using the screen isn't that bad of a hardship, just another step I would rather skip.

But I rely heavily on it on the iPhone. Sometimes when I'm out and suddenly ushered into a place where I know I need to mute the iphone, I don't want to have to make a big show of taking it out of my pocket or purse and I just like to reach in quietly and flip the switch and know the phone is muted. I'm hoping that since these are just mock ups and rumors at that, that they aren't necessarily accurately depicting the final finished product. But I think if they're going all out to make it waterproof, it's a possibility I have to consider. I'm going to be hanging on to my SE as my primary phone but am still interested in what Apple is doing with the newer models.

If the Rose Gold case in the second picture is real I'm leaning toward yes there is a headphone jack. If you look close on the upper right edge where the bottom of the phone is there's an odd white imperfection. Holding up my phone like that, on my phone its caused by the divot for the headphone jack. If there are any other images with the back straight on, you should see a cutout in the edge for it more clearly. But these pics are held at JUST enough of an angle to obscure that.

A term from my favorite comic - Tintin!!!

It's not a money or talent problem; it's a physics problem. Even Apple can't break the laws of physics.

In very simple terms, think of the camera module as the phone's eyeball. Suppose that we people could "thin" ourselves- including our bones- in a quest to get thinner and thinner. As we "thin" our skulls more and more, eventually the "case" in which our eyeballs are held would get as thin as the eyeballs themselves. Then what? If we keep prioritizing "thinner" over everything else, the only choice is to further "thin" the case and let our "cameras" protrude...

In short, you can't squash eyeballs down to fit a thinner "case" and have them still work as eyeballs. They need some space between "light entry" and "light processing" to work properly.

I suspect the answer is one of three:
  1. Assume everyone will buy a case to "thicken" the phone and enclose it's eyeball(s). That way Apple still gets their 10 seconds of stage time to spin "thinnest iPhone ever" at the big reveal, PLUS automatic accessory sales.
  2. Quit thinning the phone and actually let the physics requirement of size of camera module dictate the "thinner" limitations. Apparently, if Apple went that way, the 4 Horsemen would gallop onto the scene, the entire universe would melt down, etc. Must be thinner.
  3. Next generation or so, when the wart is just too much, eject it out as an accessory add-on, sold separately of course. Apparently, the faithful will readily spin ejections of consumer utility with words like "antiquated" (cameras are older than 3.5mm jack) and thoroughly marginalize having to carry extra adapters so that a phone can do what it used to be able to do without such adapters. Add-on camera modules could cover just about any quality level- conceptually one could design a full DSLR to connect to a phone; plus, ejecting the camera would drop weight and probably facilitate an even "thinner" design for that generation. And, if the connector for this camera module could be proprietary, B2B licensing fees and B2C retail markup could be lucrative.
All problems solved. ;)

My guess is #1 for now but #3 coming soon, which would then be followed by ejecting the battery in the next generation and assuming #1 to cover power needs. Once again, batteries are more "antiquated" then 3.5mm and ejecting the battery would drop much weight and allow for a MUCH thinner phone. Sure, it wouldn't actually power up without a case but who cares- it would be "thinner"! and "lighter"! And we (apparently) don't mind buying accessory adapters to make it do things that it used to be able to do out of the box.

You know what, if they could make the components capable of fitting together into one attractive whole, I might not object to such a concept of a modular smartphone. I could build my own and if I don't like the results I can go complain to myself. I would love to be able to replace the battery myself. Customize the lenses according to my needs for the day. Sure, why not. LEGO IPhone for the win!

If there is no mute switch, get over it. This is the direction we're heading in. Apple's main target is create a phone with no bezels (or make them as small as possible) and with no buttons on it at all. It'll only get worse for you kind of people. Seriously, get over it. You'll buy it anyway once you see the promotion pictures on Apple's website.

I am okay with the removal of the mute button; the less hardware buttons, the better.

I am NOT okay with exclusive features for the Plus version.

Am I in the minority that I find this design absolutely horrid? The "pro" version looks terrible.
I think they're ugly, too, but I can't really say what precisely throws me off nor what I would do to fix them. Perhaps I would try to make the color difference between the remaining antenna lines less stark against the lighter metallic bodies, for starters.

So many people object to returning the iPhone to previous thicknesses so I'm not sure what Apple could do to mitigate the look of the camera lenses. I think a polished steel looking ring would be attractive but it would be another separate part to compromise water resistance, I guess.

If I do get this fugchild it will be for a kickass camera, not for the looks and I definitely won't appreciate the removal of the physical mute switch until we get the allegedly hot looking futuristic IPhone in 2017 that's supposed to look like one solid slab of polished glass. Then and only then will all be forgiven. ;)

You mean you don't doubt them now? Selling 2 years old hardware at today's price (computers) selling 3 years old design phones (iPhone SE and rumored iPhone 7) Selling 3 years old Top of the line Mac Pro .....I could go on...

Sooo, stock up on AAPL now before they flood the market with brand new goodies between now and next year? ;)

We need Steve Jobs. Seriously.
Do we? If past performance were a predictor we can assume we would probably be in the middle of one of his down cycles. He was not always in fine form. He would often have successes and then have his failures while he road those successes to into a next cycle decision that would fail him and fail us. So maybe in few years he would have been back on the upswing.

Seriously. Apple is fine. The whole industry is dealing with a cycle of slow innovation. When that changes I expect Apple to lead or certainly follow just behind and make those innovations usable for the masses (read VR, read IoT, read autonomous passenger vehicles...)

why does the camera bump on the 4.7 look different in every. single. post?

Be careful what you wish for. While we're both joking (I think), this next phone is kicking out a highly ubiquitous feature and apparently preserving it's functionally with an add-on adapter of some kind. "Thinner" colliding with physics limits will continue to beg for consideration of other things currently built inside to get jettisoned to adapters too. I really could see the camera and battery becoming accessory items due to the relentless press of "thinner" above all else.
