For me the rose gold and space black iPhones are both looking like a 5.5'' size. So I think it's probably true that we will get three new models like it had been reported. iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 Pro (with dual camera and smart connector).

Maybe it's just me, but those mock-ups look terrible, especially the 5.5 inch version. I think it's mainly the camera warts. Apple couldn't find an alternative to them, with all their resources?

It's not a money or talent problem; it's a physics problem. Even Apple can't break the laws of physics.

In very simple terms, think of the camera module as the phone's eyeball. Suppose that we people could "thin" ourselves- including our bones- in a quest to get thinner and thinner. As we "thin" our skulls more and more, eventually the "case" in which our eyeballs are held would get as thin as the eyeballs themselves. Then what? If we keep prioritizing "thinner" over everything else, the only choice is to further "thin" the case and let our "cameras" protrude...

In short, you can't squash eyeballs down to fit a thinner "case" and have them still work as eyeballs. They need some space between "light entry" and "light processing" to work properly.

I suspect the answer is one of three:
  1. Assume everyone will buy a case to "thicken" the phone and enclose it's eyeball(s). That way Apple still gets their 10 seconds of stage time to spin "thinnest iPhone ever" at the big reveal, PLUS automatic accessory sales.
  2. Quit thinning the phone and actually let the physics requirement of size of camera module dictate the "thinner" limitations. Apparently, if Apple went that way, the 4 Horsemen would gallop onto the scene, the entire universe would melt down, etc. Must be thinner.
  3. Next generation or so, when the wart is just too much, eject it out as an accessory add-on, sold separately of course. Apparently, the faithful will readily spin ejections of consumer utility with words like "antiquated" (cameras are older than 3.5mm jack) and thoroughly marginalize having to carry extra adapters so that a phone can do what it used to be able to do without such adapters. Add-on camera modules could cover just about any quality level- conceptually one could design a full DSLR to connect to a phone; plus, ejecting the camera would drop weight and probably facilitate an even "thinner" design for that generation. And, if the connector for this camera module could be proprietary, B2B licensing fees and B2C retail markup could be lucrative.
All problems solved. ;)

My guess is #1 for now but #3 coming soon, which would then be followed by ejecting the battery in the next generation and assuming #1 to cover power needs. Once again, batteries are more "antiquated" than 3.5mm and ejecting the battery would drop much weight and allow for a MUCH thinner phone. Sure, it wouldn't actually power up without a case but who cares- it would be "thinner"! and "lighter"! And we (apparently) don't mind buying accessory adapters to make it do things that it used to be able to do out of the box.

Ok I have not read the thread yet just the article. So apologies if anyone has raised the same points.

Here is what I see.

I see two photos of two iPhone 7Plus models, one is a Pro (right).

So that means we can expect;

iPhone 7
iPhone 7+
iPhone 7+ Pro (smart connector + dual camera)

Neither of those photos to my eye look like the 4.7" iPhone. They look very large in the hand. The two cameras also look proportionately identical (with the different of flash position because the PRO has a dual lens assembly pushing it closer to centre). I can do more work later in photoshop to compare promotions but I've a trained eye.

Another aspect, is if the left image was a 4.7" model. I do no believe the thumb would be so low. I have my iPhone 4.7" in my hand now in a similar position and my thumb is either resting on the mute button or touching the top left corner. My hands are average size, maybe smaller than average.

These really do look like two versions of the Plus size chassis.

Are these supposed to be models or incomplete units? The 7 Plus is 100% a plastic model as you can see by the crooked home button and plastic front 'glass'. The front looks exactly like an iPhone 6S dummy
And who said the home button had to be flush to be a force touch home button? The Force Touch trackpad wasn't made 100% flush to the rest of the MacBook body because it's useful to feel where it is.

I can't say I'll miss the switch......the headphone jack on the other hand.....
If it means to get the rumored noise-cancelling included in the device I'll happily wave goodbye to the classic headphone jack.

What's the deal with the light sensor on the front of the 7 Plus? It looks pill shaped, I wonder if they're planning to put a front flash in there
Guess it's for the rumored true tone display they already introduced with the 9.7" iPad pro.

The Nubia Z11 is what an iPhone should've been.
Tastes are different. To me, the z11 and the z9 are poor design rip-offs looking worse than the original(s).

But with Jonathan Ive you will get the same boring design over and over and over again.
You don't build a brand by constantly changing the design language of your products. Unlike most other smartphones, the iPhone is immediately recognized by many people. Probably one of the reasons why the silhouette is willingly used in ads.

And the clueless Tom Cook isn't the right man to lead a company like Apple.
Depends whom you ask. Financially he seems to make a lot of things right. Whether he'll be the right man with vision and guts to find the right balance between risk and reason remains to be seen.

I think it's mainly the camera warts. Apple couldn't find an alternative to them, with all their resources?
All their resources can't make them break the laws of physics. Are the handsets of other companies with flush camera(s) as thin as the iPhone and deliver similar picture quality and features (e.g. optical stabilization and in the future perhaps optical zoom)?

Am I in the minority that I find this design absolutely horrid? The "pro" version looks terrible.

So based on the comments here, this iPhone won't sell and will be a sales failure. Just like the last one and the one before that.

Oh wait, I forgot. Trolls who had no plans to buy an iPhone aren't representative of actual users, no matter how much they claim they are.

Too many iterations of the iPhone - what happened to Apple's simplicity? Ask anybody what an 'SE' or 'S' is, and they wouldn't have a clue (heck, I don't know what the 'S' stands for, since its introduction as the 'iPhone 4S').

Doesn't seem like anything new is really coming to this device, said it before..I'll pick up a used one down the road maybe.. i'll wait for the phone after this one.. the new screen alone is worth the wait.

The only way I would justify getting this is by stepping up to the Plus, because that is what I originally wanted. Otherwise, its waste of money since the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 7 are basically identical twins, except one came out of the mothership 12 months later.

Whilst I agree people need to move on and accept Jobs is dead and gone, I think someone should take over from Tim Cook. I'm not sure I like his Apple but can't see him going anywhere anytime soon.

Thing is, Apple doesn't have anyone better to take over. Cook was Steve's chosen successor. They won't come with more power than that.

Jobs was the emperor at Apple. No one else will have that power to centrally manage the way he did. This style of management rarely works anyway but Jobs was a rare person.

Possible stereo speakers, thinner (I kind of hate that and need a case to make the phone more comfortable to hold), true tone screen, and dual camera gets them another year as they focus on a few gimmicks like digital sound.

Personally, I'd rather see a resolution bump (iphone 4, 5, and 6 saw higher resolution). The Plus version is still running a lower resolution than native which made the first 6 Plus a laggy mess. That's the only phone I ever returned and went back to previous because it was actually slower than the 5S.

Make phone louder. More RAM. More storage. Sold..

Sounds like from rumors, I'm waiting til next year. I'll still upgrade this year because it's free for me every year, but there's no rush.

Is Jony a design genius or simply the combination of steve as the catalysis results in amazing creation?
I guess we have answers now.
