Apple said they won't be releasing numbers of the Apple Watch or the iPhone 7, BEFORE they released the products.

Meanwhile, Samsung never releases numbers for anything. Not even to investors. No one bats an eye. No one says that the Galaxy Gear or the latest Galaxy phone is a flop.

Double standards.

Double standards maybe, but one that Apple set for itself, not by other.

1. Apple voluntarily started it's tradition of announcing first weekend iPhone sales, later iPad, with the first model of each respective product. This is the first time Apple has not released 1st weekend sales numbers of the iPhone. Apple is the one who wants to change the way it's success is judged.

2. Apple and Samsung define sales differently. Apple books a sale when the unit is sold to the consumer or retailer. Samsung books a sale when it's shipped to the distributor. Again, Apple defined how it wants a sale to be considered, not anyone on MR, not anyone on Wall Street, not anyone at a newspaper or other news outlet. It was done in an executive meeting in Cupertino.

So double standard, but no room to complain. Apple is only being judged here by the way Apple said it wanted to be judged in the past. Now that it doesn't suit it as well they can't just take there ball and go home. They have to play out the game.

Frankly, I find it odd they didn't release numbers. It's understood the 7 isn't a blockbuster. It's understood phone sales are weak. Apple hiding the numbers only causes negative speculation that sales are even worse than what they actually might be.

This happens every year. People complain about not getting their phones. Production catches up. People get their phones. People love their phones.

Rinse and repeat. :)

then you'd think Apple would have fixed the problem by now and had a decent amount of phones available for release week. Yet (as you accurately point out), Apple can't seem to figure out how to make enough iPhones for the first week rush. (or maybe they just would rather create false demand by under-producing the more popular models.)

And, I don't know about you, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a new color, black, on a model with a new dual camera, the Plus, would be a winning combination that people want, and I'm no Apple Executive, but maybe make MORE of that model and LESS of the Rose Gold?

Just got a email from Target Mobile telling me that my iPhone 7 plus is ready for pickup. People forget about Target and about the Apple products that they sell in the stores. The store also had the new Apple watch series 2 in stock so i think i will pick up my first Apple watch, when i go to pick up my iPhone 7 plus today. Why wait months when you can just go to a retail store and pick it up.

What color did you get? I want my 7Plus on apple upgrade program, and I'm with Tmobile, and I want Black, so I have to wait until an Apple Store actually has them in stock before I can do that, because TMobile and Apple won't allow online ordering with the apple program if you're a Tmobile customer.

Last year, Apple had over 13 million iPhone sales in the first week. That's an awful lot. And it's very, very difficult to keep on top of that.

You'll need to manufacture about 150,000 phones a day, just to reach 1 million phones in a week — never mind 13 million. Then you need to package them. Ship them. Insure them. Distribute them.

Seldom other companies have the supply problem Apple does, because seldom other companies have the demand that Apple does.

I really don't think Apple are as incompetent as some people here think they are. These are ludicrous, unparalleled numbers.

If I was Apple's CFO, I would only report revenue and EPS.

All the other data are food for trolls, pundits and analysts to manipulate the stock and create fictional "narratives" that only do harm to the company.

I will be honest, I don't care if Apple releases numbers on anything. I was just responding to a post, and pointing out that Apple has reported numbers all the time until recently. I couldn't care less about Samsung's numbers either. They could sell 100 times the number Apple sells, and it would not bother me at all.

In fact, I think that Apple was a MUCH better company in the eyes of a consumer when hardly anyone used their products.

What does this mean exactly, no one wants iPhone 7, or iPhone 7 stock levels are high? Would be nice if Apple released weekend sales figures like they used to only up until recently.
Apple is, and has been... the absolute master of smoke and mirrors marketing, of manipulating the mindset of the public in order to create the illusion of tight supply, a degree of exclusivity, limited availability etc. The masterful way they manage public perception and the companies squeaky clean image is very impressive.

Actually it's very easy for Apple.

They've got years of experience and a vast staff of highly skilled people.

And yet, there have been plenty of every color combination of the iPhone 7 available and none of the 7 Plus (except Rose Gold). It's obvious people aren't rushing to buy the iPhone 7...the Plus is what is in demand. So, yes, I think Apple is as incompetent as people here think they are!

People want that camera on the plus. Is there something really special about the non-plus 7?

I hope the camera on the plus ends up being the standard camera for the iPhone 8.

That's the point I made a few posts back. New color--black. New camera--Plus. A black 7 Plus is the highest demand.

I was checking that site religiously and the stock changes every few hours. Checked it yesterday around 9 am and there wasn't any stock nearby me for the iPhone 7 plus checked around 10:30 and bam the phone I wanted was in stock. Reserved the black 128 gb iPhone 7 plus for At&T, went to apple and picked it up. Must have been a big shipment saw this one dude buying at least 8 of them at once and another guy bought 3 of them plus everyone else was buying the black plus just for themselves.

Companies' strategies evolve with time. Jobs started the tradition of announcing first week(end) sales. Cook apparently feels there's no need as other companies don't. No reason for Cook to adhere to the past. Can certainly understand the decision on releasing Watch numbers (even quarterly) that can greatly benefit competitors in a relatively new market, whether good or bad.

There's little upside to revealing first week phone numbers in an up-market other than to get tech forum people frothed up. Ditto in a down market. Relatively tiny numbers influenced in either case.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Note 7 fire issue had something to do with the iPhone numbers change in strategy timing.

They must be delivering a pathetic 2 into stores daily. That is hardly good retail Angela. Reservations don't work and stock there before opening is gone in 5 minutes. Some of us would actually like to, you know, buy a new phone, not just visit a store with two year old computers.

Here in the UK its starting to feel like my iPhone 7 Plus (Jet Black, 128GB) will take weeks to arrive, if they can't even roll out properly in the states, what chances do we have?!?! how can be considered anything short of a **** up??
Just looked at istock now and it looks like Europe is a big 'no-no' when it comes to availability. This confirms the Apple 'check availability'. Nothing available for pickup. No models of any colour or memory size.

I guess we are paying the penalty for the better availability in the USA

This map is total ********.
It is showing the 7+ I want to buy at my local store but when I go onto apple's site to "order" it and select the store for pickup it says it is not available...

Edit: Talked to Apple, what it is - it could be showing IN STOCK in a certain store, but most likely they are already reserved. So Technically its IN STOCK, but there is a reservation on the unit, so they can't sell it.

Plenty of Pluses are available - if you want Rose Gold only.

That map includes general availability and reserve for IUP phones. Green might mean only IUP phones are available there.

Thanks for the heads up Macrumors. Just cancelled my online order that's supposed to ship October 14th

I love how I ordered a 32gb matte black 7+ on launch day and AT&T keeps pushing my ship date back but I could drive 45min away and get one today. Let's keep the walk in customers happy who cares about the people who pre ordered
Just call Apple and cancel your order. Go online and just use their pickup service.

Just went in to two different near by stores, ordered online for one and reserved through IUP, what he said ^, link via the istocknow.com site. Got both phones i had originally ordered. Cancelled online orders, so maybe someone else will have my place online. Super STOKED! didn't think i was going to be able to get them both, specially my 7+ black.

People forget, Apple does not make products to sit on the self. They have been in the mode of order then make for years, thats why every year there are people complaining the have to wait awhile for their phone. Apple has no idea how many
people will order a phone on launch day, so as the orders come in they ram up the production and will sooner or later meet demand so that an iPhone order can be available to be sent the next day or so or in stores. Sure Apple could ram up production early and stock all outlets, but then you have people guessing all sorts of things about how many they sold and even saying that they are not selling enough when in the long run they will sell everything. Apple is smart to control the wall street guessing nuts and take control of its own inventory. With that being said most Apple product launches will take
about a month or so to close the deliver gap to the customer.

This map just got me my phone! I found 256GB Black phones at Apple's 5th Ave store. You have to reserve via IUP but once you get to the store you can buy it outright.

Great find!

Still waiting for the Verizon 128GB Matte Black iPhone 7 Plus which hasn't been available :(
That's what I'm getting too... I ordered through Verizon though on September 18th. Estimated delivery: 11/02
i'm only upgrading cause t-mobile's promotion lol. pretty sure a large percentage of iphone 7 owner has the same reason.
Same! I was going to wait for the iPhone after this one because of the rumored OLED screen and wireless charging but then I saw Verizon would give me $650 for my iPhone 6... I couldn't pass that up. Usually I'd get like $220 max from Verizon, and I don't do trade ins anyway (typically). So now instead of paying close to $40/mo just for the 7 Plus 128GB I'm paying $9/mo.
Ordered a 128 GB black 7 Plus. Estimated delivery in 6 weeks.
Similar here, 128GB black Plus from Verizon, won't be here until 11/02 apparently. I ordered on 9/18. It's still processing.

I've seen mixed situations from reading on reddit. Most can do that others, like myself :( cannot. I was turned away yesterday saying that reserving the iphone online to pickup is just for IUP. Was so pissed.

Then you need to go back to the store and demand to speak to the manager and file a complaint against the person who turned you away. If you read the text from your confirmation email at the bottom you'd see that you can pay any how. Here is the exact text I copied from my confirmation email FAQ for one of the questions asked, at the bottom of the mail.

"Can I change to a different form of payment for the iPhone Upgrade Program?
Yes. You can also upgrade your iPhone to carrier financing or purchase it at full price. Ask a Specialist for more information."

You need to be compensated for their incompetence!
