Why do people always say they're not "essential upgrades"? Do they think everyone upgrades yearly?

This is a fantastic upgrade for anyone NOT on a 6S.
I'm jumping to the iPhone 7 Plus coming from the iPhone 6 Plus. I agree with you it's time to upgrade. However I feel that for some odd reason whenever a new iPhone is about to arrive, my iPhone slows down to a crawl lol!

As a future Jet Black owner, the reviews showing that the phone will show hairline scratches even after only a few days use has me worried. I guess I better get a clear case right away....usually I don't use cases but this time it looks unavoidable.

Your logic doesn't makes sense. The 7 has a completely different quad core processor. Using your logic you couldn't compare it to the 6s because it has an older duo core processor. If most people are on a two year upgrade schedule then it make more sense to compare all the new features of this iPhone to the 6 not the 6s. Or at the very least, like Apple does it it's keynote, do a double compare. That to me is a more balanced and informative review

It's not really a quad core processor in the classical sense. It's still a dual core processor that's doing the grunt. When it wants to dial back on the processing and save battery, it'll jump to the other two cores. Regardless, it doesn't matter too much.

The 6S was so far ahead of the 6 IMHO, so comparing to the 6 wouldn't be fair. And as Apple no longer sell the 6, consumers reading reviews would want to know the difference between the 6S and the 7.

I'm not too sure why there's so much controversy about comparing the 7 to the 6S. Of course reviews would do this. They'll always compare to the previous model, rather than against what phones people are likely to be upgrading from.

I was considering getting the 4.7" iPhone when my upgrade comes around (Sept 2017) but now I don't know. If there's only a dual camera on the iPhone 8 Plus, I might have a massive phone for another two years.

Call me crazy, but all the 6S Plus pics (besides the first restaurant pic) looked better.

Did they mix up the labels?

I think there is a certain segment that does, yes. Always has been. I'm a biennial upgrader myself, no worse for the wear. This is an upgrade year for me, but w/ no subsidy, I'm saving my $ and skipping this year waiting for the supposed iPhone 8 SuperDuperExtravaganza Cool As Space Rocks Anniversary model. I don't see the 7 as "essential" even for people like me with a 6 unless their battery is zapped. I was a tiny bit tempted with the 7+ b/c of the camera, but my iP6 works fine so difficult to justify when something much more advanced will be out next year.
Same. other than I wanted the 7+ camera but not the 7+ size.

Apple business department are pretty smart/shifty!

Iphone 6/6s:
Only offers 16gb, for most it's not enough. Only choice is 64gb or more. But 64gb will fit the majority of iphone users. 32gb was not offered which that would of been the popular choice.

Iphone 7:
Lets give them "free" iphones. Wait 32gb doesn't cut it anymore bc all the people who bought a iphone 6/6s with 64gb got use to a 64gb storage (at least I have). But wait no 64gb option. So pay up $99 more for the 128gb!

Damn and that's how you make the customers pay more in the long run. Genius play around the storage in a span of 3 years.

Lets see what's next in terms of storage and pricing.

I hate to be "that guy" but Steve Jobs would've never released a phone with software that was "incomplete"

He also wouldn't let almost 2 years slide between Mackbook Air and Macbook Pro updates.

He also wouldn't have wanted anyone at Apple to wonder what he could or could not do if he was around.

So you critizise a reviewer while making your own assumption.......hmmmm

Ill decide for myself the value of this upgrade :)

From the conclusion of the Engadget review:

Boy they really are twisting themselves into a pretzel here. They're "serious contenders for best smartphones", they're "very very good" but they don't meet some arbitrary definition of innovation or something groundbreaking so.... Either the phones are good or they're not. None of this "they're really great but" nonsense. All my friends and family who are on older devices just want to know should they upgrade or not? They don't give a crap if some tech writer thinks it's groundbreaking or not.

Apple only gave reviewers 5 days to use the phone. Most of the reviews feel rushed, have a let's get them over with feel. Not good.

They are ignorant fools. It's an iPhone. It looks almost the same and feels the same. It does all the things it was able and now some more

Seems that way. The one on the left has to be the new iphone.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile's John Legere is reporting "phenomenal" sales of the device, about quadrupling those of the iPhone 6!

When discussing whether they recommend upgrading the phone why do reviewers always compare it to the most recent iteration when most people are looking to upgrade two (or more) generations back? The 7 is a huge upgrade from the 6 or 5s. And in my opinion it's still a substantial upgrade from the 6s.
It's so annoying. Techies by nature always want and have the latest and greatest thing. So when they do reviews they're always comparing to the last latest and greatest thing. Most consumers aren't getting a new phone every year. The question should be if you're on a 5/5s or 6 should you upgrade. I think that's a pretty easy answer.

my only concern is the home button. I have to try this in store first
Was thinking that too. The Verge seems to be less satisfied about it. It claims that it feels too clicky. Still ordering my iPhone 7 later this week, without trying the new home button. But just wonder how it really feels like. I mean, pretty sure it'll depend on the user. Maybe I do like it right away. Curious about that anyway.

I don't think the photos were mixed up in the review. I can see how the iPhone 7 Plus photos may look more "bland" than the iPhone 6s Plus ones, but looking at the shadows in them I have a feeling it's due to a higher dynamic range (= a good thing.. more details in shadows and highlights) combined with more subdued colors. So I think the iPhone 7 may catch more "truthful" images while the earlier ones captures more "vivid" or "social network friendly" ones.

Professionally speaking it can be argued the 7 way is the better one, because it's way easier to boost colors or contrast in post than to get an original back. Boosting contrast wrecks the shadows and highlights so you can't recover them, so if you want to maximize the photo potential that's not good to have done automatically by the phone.

But yeah, out of the box the 6s may be more readily punchy.

It's interesting, Apple has always been oriented towards pretty vivid colors but I think they are moving towards a more professional style the more their sensors advance.

The only thing making me want to upgrade is due to the larger Plus model. Last year was impossible for me to get my hands on one during launch and the year prior I got a Note 4 due to Gear VR.
But gosh, if I had got a 6S Plus last year I wouldn't be excited. I would have waited for the Nexus/pixel devices due in a few more weeks. And Apple is extremely lucky that Samsung is major damage control right now with the Note 7.

I can't tell any difference in the pictures whatsoever.

same here. I think it will be personal preference, so am not reading much into reviews, they tend to have agendas , I've run out of sites which i trust for agenda free reporting these days. So Friday I will give it a go.
