If Apple does wireless charging they'll do it in a way that makes sense and works. The AW inductive charging is the beginning I think.. Could they get rid of the headphone jack and lighting port? Probably not yet.

I think they will always have to have at least a charging port that doubles as a headphone jack. Maybe go USB-C with it and have break out cable so you can listen and charge at the same time. It would be device suicide to go completely wireless without an I/O port of any kind.

Well that's not the norm - you want less functionality, slower hardware, smaller screen - doesn't make sense. I thought most people were going forwards.

Your view of most people is skewed by this forum.

*Most* people want what works for them. What I want is a phone that I can use comfortably for my hands. The 4" size is what works for me.

Every year that Apple goes without a 4" phone loses them money, not because people who want little phones are going elsewhere, but because they're simply not upgrading. My 5s still works great, it's very fast (I notice almost no diff btw my 5s and 6s on iOS 9), the battery lasts as long as the 6s, and I've still got plenty of storage space as I planned ahead when I bought it (I'd read the rumors of bigger iphones and knew I might have the 5s for a long time). I'm not alone in this, there are a lot of us.

Heck, I know people still happily using 4s phones.

What about carbon? Maybe we'll see a composite body.

This is what I'm hoping for. A carbon fiber iPhone would be unbelievably awesome.

You can't say this with any sort of authority. It's very possible that once the 5S moves out of the low price tier position that another 4" could take its place. There are a LOT of people making this request.

Yes, literally thousands..../s

They sold 13 million the first weekend, I don't think they're concerned about the the few hundred they didn't sell to people who are hard-headed about screen size.

I have used my Apple Watch in a pool for 4.5 hours a week for over 5 weeks during physical therapy. No issues. The watch goes dark when it senses water. You can press a button to wake it under water. The watch still works 8 weeks later! A waterproof phone is feasible. Note: I left the iPhone in the locker. Surprisingly, the watch picked up the Bluetooth data transmissions about 40ft away thru the block walls! image.jpeg

Insightful and true.
There are many design changes needed. For example, look at the top 3/4 inch of the phone...most of it wasted space. Line up the camera, microphone and ear piece in a horizontal line, and gain at least a 1/2 inch (12mm) or more! Also, look at the home button...it takes up another 3/4 inch across the bottom...duh!
Also, wife's plastic 5C body..."I love it!" she says. I am not married to aluminum either...but at least alum is recyclable.

You do know that this "wasted space", needs to be compensated in some way if you remove it... My bet, a 2mm thicker phone. There is no free lunch.

Maybe they'll follow the example of the Nexus devices and put the TouchID button on the back. Fully waterproof. Carbon-fiber body. Soft buttons on the front. All-week battery life. Maybe I should have waited a year.

What about carbon? Maybe we'll see a composite body.

Considering the F-1 McLaren was made out of composite in 1988, is it far-fetched that an iPhone can be done so in 2016?

iPhone 7, keep up. Wireless charging please!

The problem with wireless charging is you can't magically defeat the laws of physics. In order to faster charger via induction you need to create a bigger magnetic field which means more power running into the charger which can lead to:

* the charger bursting into flame
* hazards of EM radiation

that's why wireless charging is so lame right now.

are people really dropping there phones in water to the point it needs to be water resistant? you can be without your phone in the pool. seems like a pointless feature to add being that the speakers, mic, charge port, etc would have to be water resistant. doing this would muffle/reduce clarity. why not focus on making the battery last longer or something more important. just my thoughts...

actually the number one place where people drop their phones with water is the toilet believe it or not

Now imagine retrieving waterproof iPhone 7 from crap-infested pee-water... I shudder even contemplating it.

Hallelujah. Back to a plastic case, although the article used every word to describe the "new material" or "non metallic" material.

Gone will be the susceptible slippery phones, promising sustainability, all the while creating the cottage industry of millions upon millions of plastic cases and covers.

Not too far fetched going by that video going around of the new iPhones being under water for over an hour and still working.
It's working for now. But corrosion will likely kill it in the near feature.
True story: i forgot my iphone and macbook outside and it rained on them. After i dried them, miracle! They worked perfectly. But after a few weeks they died. :(

Non metallic casing? Hmm, that doesn't sound good. I don't want a $1000 plastic phone.
Or maybe they'll use a ceramic or composite case (like fibre carbon)?
I would love a ceramic case. Ceramic definitely feels better than aluminium (it's heavier and has a nice texture, like the stainless steel from the 4/4s) and it's way more scratch resistant than aluminium/steel.

It is not convenient when it takes longer than an Apple 12W power supply, as it uses a lot less power to charge and therefore takes longer. No point having a choice when one system is not as quick as the current system - that's going backwards.
So it's the same as charging from your computer's USB; in the sense that it's slower than the wall charger.
I think you're missing the fact that people have various usage/charging scenarios. I, for example, have at least 4.
1. At work I charge via USB from computer (display's USB hub to be exact). It's a place, where I could use wireless charging (like my Android using friends do), because I often have go to meetings etc, when I need to unplug and then plug the phone back. Having wireless charging would have been more comfortable than connecting cable to the phone. I'm at work long enough for the wireless charging to make sense - also in terms of its slowness, because during the 8+ hours spent at work I don't need fast charging.
2. At home I use the wall charger only in the bedroom when I plug a drained phone to charge fully during the night.
3. At all other times I use USB charging from Thunderbolt Display to sync and charge at the same time. But since I now use iTunes Match I rarely need to sync, so having a wireless charging pad wouldn't hurt, cause it's just more convenient to put the phone down and pick it up when needed without having to be careful about the cable and the charging port.
4. And then there's my car, where I use Belkin's car charger, so that's the place where wireless charging wouldn't work for me, because the phone is in a holder for quick access.

Therefore: I really don't see how having an additional (unobtrusive) feature could hurt.

I only use USB power supply's - 12W - charges quicker and more reliable thanks. I never charge via USB as this degrades the battery quicker as well, plus it takes a lot longer.

Finally an iPhone resistant to everyday life! As in the old days of indestructible Nokia !

The iphone 7 series will be transitional iphones for apple.
The iphone 7 will keep the physical homebutton with touchid.
The iphone 7 plus won' t, it will have a 3d touch /virtual homebutton. It will be a device with smaller bezels than the regular 7. this way it will be much more attractive for people to get the 7 plus, which will have a bigger screen, and will be wider than the regular 7, but not much taller.

The regular 7 will keep the physical touchid button at the bottom, for the more traditional iphone fans, which don' t like the learning curve of new features and like to keep things the same as they are. The less progressive apple users.

The 7 plus will be for the new/future apple fans and android users that like big screens and are used to a non physical homebutton.

Just thinking out loud. But in my opinion this is for apple the way to make the more expensive 7+ more attractive and less.... In your face/big. The 6s+ just isn' t elegant enough. It is just a bigger and less refined iphone 6s in design.

Losing money? Last I heard the iPhone keeps breaking it's own sales records.

Yeah under Jobs they would never do that, but under Cook they would totally have a bunch of different iPhones like that.

It would be nice to see them do wireless charging, and Bluetooth headphones to get rid of the headphone jack, and waterproof the speaker/mic system. Just a thought.

No thanks for the ditching of the headphone port. Many of the guys I know in the gym have used bluetooth head/earphones and complain of stuttery playback caused by some of the cardio machines. They since went back to wired head/earphones and the problem is gone.

The only difference will be the lack of a physical homebutton, and that it will be slightly wider, with a bigger and higher res screen and a bigger battery.
And it will be more expensive of course.
