It continues to amuse me that Apple continues to offer recording capabilities in the iPhone that their own playback device (i.e. AppleTV) cannot handle.

There's almost nothing to watch in 4k. How can it be a huge selling point. Most (the 99%+) people that make movies with their phones do not want huge files and ridiculously high resolution quality, 1080 is fine, it's actually ridiculous to suggest 4k 'has arrived' - it really hasn't.

Not true. There's plenty of films to buy, download and steam on VIMEO. I've bought 10 surf, skateboarding & skiing films this year. Orchard Media supply a lot of extreme sport films in 4K. Just because iTunes does not offer 4K does not mean that the rest do not! I never buy from iTunes now as I prefer DRM Free films.

Wow, it has the ability to fill up 32gb in no-time :D

Admit it, 32GB is the new 16GB.

30x2 = 60FPS
16x2 = 32GB
#Apple'sLogic

There will probably be lower FPS options which take up less space. At least 16GB is expected to be gone and 128GB will now be the middle tier. Not everyone will be shooting 4K with their phones.. and anyone who buys this to shoot a bunch of 4K video and goes with 32GB only has their self to blame.

I'm just making a wild guess here but the hidden feature of the iPhone 7 that no one talked about will be battery life. 2 more hours overall on both models is what I'm guessing. What do you guys think? Would that make iphone 7 a good upgrade?

Not the "hidden" feature. It leaked a couple of weeks ago that the battery was 14% larger so, if true, that would equate, all things being equal, to approx. couple of hours on the 7 and maybe close to 3 on the 7 Plus.

And everyone's situation is different, but there is an impressive list of other things this phone will have, again if rumors are correct, for someone considering an upgrade-- Faster, more powerful processor, stronger, sharper screen with the great True Tone color, improved water proofing, improved flash, improved microphones, improved speaker sound and volume, Optical Image Stabilization, new low light camera, new duo camera system on Plus, new lightning headphone system, improved BT, new color choices, etc., plus whatever hasn't leaked.

Definitely below.

Now, as a 6s owner 2 more hours of battery life is definitely something worth considering. I just hope battery life is as good if not better with next year's iPhone 8.

I doubt there will be any battery improvements next year, because the bezels will be substantially reduced, meaning the battery will most certainly will be smaller. Though the iPhone 8+ will have a much smaller foot print so I think most people will go for the bigger model next year.

Can someone explain to me what is the use of 60fps, please?
Cinema format is 24fps, TV is 30fps in US and 25fps in Europe
48fps on Hobbit wasn't really well received so that only reason for 60fps I see is to have slow motion effect in which 60fps doesn't really give you that much slow motion anyway.

So, what is the real and true benefit to someone wanting to shoot 60fps? Cinema was on 24fps for ages and apparently there was always reason for it so what am I missing?

It looks better with moving subjects, the extra frames provide a crisper image with a better flow to it..
Not everyone likes it thou, as you mentioned with the hobbit.

Well that's just great...IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH BATTERY!!

There are external (and pocketable) charger options for those who are more serious. Even my dedicated Sony camera that shoots amazing 4K still needs a battery change in about an hour, and the iPhone will do better than that.

I actually just got done shooting a bunch of 4K on my 6S Plus over the past few days (the most I've used the 4K since owning). Obviously the battery drained much quicker, but it was decent, and I was really impressed with the video quality, even in cloudy low light conditions (slapped it on a cheap monopod for improved stability and used a Shure Lightning mic for better audio).

It's definitely nice having something this portable that can also take a fair amount of abuse. Mine's just in the leather case with a screen protector.. I was outside in 80-90 degree weather, it got dropped a couple times, dust was flying around, it started sprinkling once, and it didn't get damaged at all. Looking forward to seeing what these new cameras can do.

I don't use 4K video recording at all...maybe in another couple years...waste of a feature when few will actually use it.

Hardly a waste of a feature, and people do actually use it. I don't care how many or few. I'm sure you don't have those figures either.

I'm sure the figures r super low plus many of us would rather save space/storage and do 1080p or quad hd video recording....

Well then you can do that! It's not a waste just because you don't personally use it.

That's true.

But even if you want to "save space" by only shooting 1080p... you still need to do something with that footage. Your phone will still fill up eventually.

You can shoot 1080p to make smaller file sizes... but where will those files live forever?

The phone was never meant for permanent storage of your photos and videos.

I find that the benefit of 4K is that it I can crop afterwards and still get 1080p. Effectively a 2x zoom.

Exactly.

I wish more people would realize that shooting in 4K isn't always analogous to viewing in 4K. There are certainly other benefits.

Like you... I've shot in 4K and then edited on a 1080p timeline. I was then able to push-in in post... simulating a second camera. That can be quite handy... and it can make the video more interesting.

Also... if you simply scale the 4K down to 1080p ... the resulting video is very crisp and sharp. More so than if you just shot 1080p to begin with.

Over the weekend, respected KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also listed improved IPX7 water resistance as one of the upgrades to the upcoming iPhone.

Apple might not even mention the new water resistance level.
Would they want millions of people pouring champagne onto their iPhone 7's like idiots?
I think not.

(Maybe Moet & Chandon and Taittinger might like it. Louis Roederer Cristal would hate it.)

The camera is one of the biggest features of these flagship smartphones. If Apple still hadn't moved up to 4K by now I can only imagine how many people would be complaining and how many sales the 6S models would've lost to the competition because of it. A smart consumer wants these capabilities even if they're not using them much right now, because they know 4K is about to become the new standard and it's getting used more and more with each passing year. When you factor in how long many hang onto their devices (2-3 years),buy the cheaper older model when the new one comes out, or buy used models whenever, 4K was added at the perfect time and will prove to be anything but a wasted feature in the long run.

Great points about downscaling and cropping, too.

Some people aren't interested in video, they use device as a pocket office.
64GB would not be necessary for them. 32 would be fine.

So? Do you want Apple to be "insanely great" or "just good enough"?
[doublepost=1473189074][/doublepost]
My guess, eventually Apple is going to tire of the protrusion and eject the camera out to an accessory add-on. As crazy as that sounds, I think "thinner" will continue to dominate, which means the camera bump will only grow. However, test the market's acceptance of ejecting the headphone jack and, if that goes well, kicking out another common, popular, internal component to an accessory add-on shouldn't seem THAT crazy. Reword many of the very same arguments supporting the headphone jack ejection and they fit the idea of a camera ejection just as well.

Lot's of people rarely even use the phone feature, prefering instead to text and email. So in addition to the camera Apple could remove the phone feature to make it even thinner. Then sell a Lightning dingus to add phone capability. Even better, sell a separate camera dingus and a phone dingus but connect them wirelessly! So you only carry the extra dinguses when you need them.

Imagine how miniscule the battery need be without a phone or camera. Ive could finally make the anorexic iDingus of his dreams.

A post like that means I can disregard everything you say from now on. Thanks for the warning.
