I would not be surprised at all if they moved to a property headphone jack. That would suck so much, but as long as they offer an adaptor. I have over 6 devices that use the 3.5mm jack and I'm not about to just throw them out.
I'm not sure what the disadvantages are (surely there must be some, and someone more knowledgeable can probably tell you what they are!), but couldn't they use the 2.5mm headphone jack? Not quite a proprietary interface, but definitely not one that's very common.

Jony-Pencil Dick-Ive at it again. I wonder if he has an obsession for anorexic run way models too...

This thinner craze is stupid and no good in the long run. Battery life will never improve on these phones or iPads. I also can't wait to see what happens in a year or two with the current 5K iMac and their 105 degree GPU - willing to bet there will be some issues because of extreme heat.

Of course it'll be thinner; that's half the marketing for upgraders anyhow.

And guess what! It'll have an A10, marginally better cameras, and a few extra LTE band frequencies! Wooooooo #predictable

Let's see that wireless charging from the AW applied to the iPhone, Apple. Let's see water proof. Let's see thinner top/bottom bezels. Let's see that rumored fuel cell battery. Let's see NFC open up. Get innovative too, not just play catch up.

So, what has the competition has bought of innovative?

IR blaster? Really? 70's technology?

All I want is iPhone 6 Plus to get shorter so it fits into my pocket. For anyone who is worried about the camera sticking out more, I'd wager that Apple will use the rumored multi camera setup that's said to cut camera thickness in half.

As long as battery life is on par or better than current iPhones, then they can make it as thin as they like.

Exactly. The 6+ is superb. I can get more than 2 days usage out of it, however I find myself still charging every night as it's convenient to do so. There's no way I would trade the thinness of this model more battery capacity I don't need.

Battery life can always be improved, but personally, I prefer thinner and lighter. The 4, while beautiful, felt like a brick in my pants.

I think Apple to date has made the right trade offs- even as the screens got larger, the phones feel slimmer and lighter while battery life has remained the same or slightly better.

I definitely trust Jonny and Apple's engineers to make those trade offs far more than MR posters, that's for sure. The M8, for example, feels like a brick compared to the 6 and yet battery life is atrocious.

Apple is in danger of getting a clinical diagnosis of anorexia regarding ever thinner phones..

iPhone, looking at self in mirror: "Do I look fat to you?" "Hey, do you think I look fat?" "I'm going on a diet"

In danger? They had that diagnosis 2 years ago with 5s. Every year they've pointlessly shaved down more and more for not functional befit. Either ergonomically or systems wise. They have lost functionally and capacity that could have been there.

And all for shaving even more off their manufacturing materials costs. Because the less case you have, the less you are spending on material. Also an excuse to cut things like ambient light sensors and battery material.

Honestly, just give me an iPhone 4 with a modern camera and soc and I'd be perfectly happy.

I'd imagine increased complexity and manufacturing costs associated with further miniaturization offset that.

iPod touch isn't iPhone. I guarantee you iPhone isn't losing ambient light sensor.

Like you, I'm no expert at what makes this stuff work and what's better than what. I'm sure there are alternatives the offer equal or better quality, but it's really a big shift to make and it's somewhat resentful if the reason for the change is just because they want to shave off 0.5 mm off of a phone. What makes things even worse is that they'll bundle a new set of standard EarPods and sell a separate adapter for $19.99 knowing that pretty much EVERYTHING that the general consumer uses won't work.

It'd be really advantageous of Apple to include the adapter for the first generation because even the completely unaware user will know the "headphone jack" and when they grab their friends headphones or stereo and see that they can't plug it in, they'll be annoyed. I'd say that the 3.5mm jack is used more than USB for the general user.

It doesn't matter how thin it is, or what it looks like.

Because we'll all be putting them in thick and ugly cases. The iPhone 6 is already unusable without one - the brushed aluminium is ungrippable, and it slides out of all but the largest hands. Imagine trying to use that round and slippery side to grip an even thinner iPhone...

Unless you feel like replacing your screen every few months, you deliberately lose the design that Ive so lovingly created.

Dear Apple,

ip7 - square edges and sexy like the ip4&5, i don't want a tiny ipad for a phone. maybe glass backed.
watch - round face, square edges, thinner, less features, less expensive. Sell a health watch, business watch, and a fashion watch, with different complexities/sensors depending on use.
imac - Forget the all-in-one, separate the screen and computer and forget the mini. I don't want to throw away/sell a 5k screen and buy a new one every 4 years.
Apple music - Make it Instagram simple. Not Facebook simple.
Apple TV set- Sell a beautiful TV Screen. Make it transparent or something awesome. We know screens are a commodity, but go ahead and put an Apple tax on it, I'd pay it. Go ahead and combine the screen & apple tv computer stuff with this. We don't want extra cords on the wall, and we're not doing serious work with it.
Apple car - Really? Are we at tipping point with electric cars? Some junction of technology and utility that we'll tell our grandchildren about? Or are you just doing it to do it. It's gonna be self driving huh. Pretty risky move, maybe let someone else have the car market, not like you need it.

Don't you think a box-like design on a 4.7" and especially a 5.5" device would be a bit cumbersome? The curved edges help make the iPhone 6/6 Plus feel smaller and more manageable.

So we have about a full year to convince Apple to do otherwise. Let's do it.
Actually a bit less, if they decided to make it thicker last minute they'd have to postpone launching it as it takes some time to test a complete device with housing and probably they'd redesign some components.

I'm hoping they rid us of the hideous 6 Plus design and make something drastically different. Also curved edge screen options if I'm going to consider switching from Android.

Sony releases a smartphone with a 4K screen, 23MP camera, Octa-Core processor and 2+ days battery life... and all Apple are concerned about is how thin they can get it??

Apple have lost their edge. They used to innovate, now they just release beautiful things.
