There have been numerous articles posted over the past few months talking about the rumor of Apple removing the 3.5mm jack. If you look back at those articles, the numbers of responses are astounding and the vast majority of responses are from people furious about the potential (probably imminent) 3.5mm jack removal.

The 3.5mm jack is a universal standard across laptops, automobiles, desktops, music players, stereos, mobile phones, tablets, even in-seat audio jacks on most passenger airlines. Removing this standard is a complete slap in the face to millions of consumers who have spent a lot of money on high quality headphones, earbuds, speakers, etc. that all use the 3.5mm standard.

I know people love to compare removing the 3.5mm jack to eliminating the old floppy or CD, but those were upgrades to new standards embraced by the entire computer industry as a move forward in technology and convenience.

If removed, Apple will have taken away a reliable open standard, replacing it with their proprietary standard, and I'm confident virtually no other equipment manufacture will ever embrace Lightning (I'm not talking about headset/earbud manufactures, I'm talking about other desktop, laptop, tablet, stereo, phone, automobile, music player, and aircraft manufactures). You are never going to see widespread acceptance of Lightning on other devices.

With this potential bonehead decision Apple does not move us forward, they lock us into a standard they control/own and move us away from the mainstream into a segregated solution that is not even available on Apple’s own computer line ... which coincidently uses the 3.5mm audio jack.

So what might Apple give us in return, maybe they shave a faction of a millimeter (bid deal) from the phone's thickness, and/or maybe we get a second (or better) speaker because they want us to believe we need some kind of so-called “stereo sound”.
It’s pathetic!

Give us back the 3.5mm jack and keep your second/improved speaker. We don’t need a so-called stereo in our pockets.

hmmmm, such anger. What about the millions of us who didn't spend hundreds of dollars on high quality head phones? I think we will be fine with Bluetooth.

USB-C might have been more tolerable. But I'm waiting to see how Apple sells it at their presentation first. Really though there's not much of a choice if you want the most current iphone no matter how this makes you feel. It'll be interesting to see the response and how Apple deals with it.

Let it go..... Again I am going to say this over and over...... That 3.5 jack takes up an enormous amount of internal space you do realize that right? Removing it allows for much more internal space for things like battery, speakers, and so on. So what difference does it make if apple will be including a lightning to 3.5 adapter? How many people truly use the 3.5 jack AND the lighting port at the same time? Likewise I am sure there will be y adapters out there to allow for charging and 3.5 jack. Even on the android side they are moving away from the 3.5 port and going over to USB-C.... The 3.5 jack is a dying tech standard. The new standard will be USB-C/Bluetooth.

Seems like a solid upgrade, just a bummer that they're not slimming out the bezels.

My 6 has a crack, so I'll probably jump on the 7.

Wish dual cameras weren't exclusive to the Plus, but I realize there's only so much space to play with. Seems like a cool feature

Was really hoping they'd bring wireless charging. But I guess that's a no-go with a metal chassis =\

And Apple giveth and taketh, my sweet spot is 64GB haha

I would be willing to bet Apple will move over to USB-C for IOS devices at some point in the near future. They seem to be embracing it completely with their mac line. I read an article awhile ago on this site I believe that stated Apple had a large role to play in the creation of the new C standard. Lighting had already be created which is why all IOS devices use it but once USB-C becomes more mainstream in Apple's own mac line I can see them making the switch.

Lightning doesn't equal USB-C. That's my only complaint about it. BT headphones work fine for me but I can be bad about charging those and won't carry that adapter everywhere. Just something to get used to.

Bummer, i really wish they would release something like the MacBook Pro that is not anodised or tinted so will not look scuffed after a few minutes in pockets without a case. I would also love a steel one! I'll forgive the weight for the added ruggedness but i assume tooling for steel would mean it was totally out of the question.

Read my above comment. The point I was trying to make was that the 3.5 jack is not going to stick around much longer on any device.

I think apple feel the future is wireless - for everything.
They have added the free adapter to keep folks like you and me (the 10% of iPhone non earbud users) happy(ish) so we can use our own earphones. In my case 8 year old trusty life time guarantee Koss PortaPro.
I'm getting used to the idea.

It doesn't really matter how this affects YOU personally, but how it will affect millions of others. Just because you're not any worse off, doesn't mean you can't admit that it's a stupid idea. I'm exaggerating here, but that's like saying "war is perfectly fine, as long as it doesn't hurt me" :)

I'll take that piano black in 128GB. Overall seems like a solid upgrade, I just hope they include Bluetooth air pods.

Was thinking the same exact thing - Ming whhat'sup how come no mention of ANY EarBuds, EarPods or AirPods at all? Seriously that's very strange for a "know-it-all".... That means that there's at least some surprises due for once - yea I know it's been reported but still a fact that this guy said zero about even the old style being on board with a new lightning seems real odd...

Really wish wireless charging was included this go-around. Oh well.

Guess we'll have to wait until the 8.[/QUOTiPhone
Honestly, anything less than having my iPhone charging while it's in my pocket is a gimmick. At this point the only difference between wired or wireless is plugging in a cable or placing it on a dock. So unless they've mastered that wifi charging method I read about a while back, it's pointless.

That's the difference between an engineers point of view and the consumer. Sure a few mm here and there is great to add more of what we already have. But getting rid of the headphone jack will add pain to many that they didn't have and what will they get, maybe a slightly nicer speaker or better haptic feedback? I don't feel like the trade off is valid.

I'm sure apple will sell it as high quality audio and all kinds of lies though. I personally am not upgrading this time around so am avoiding the whole issue, maybe next year the headphone jack trend might have yielded some alternatives. Something that matches the quality and convenience of the 3.5mm headphone jack without the need for compromises like adapters or bluetooth. There is a certain ease with which airplay audio already works but i really don't want another mac only product especially beats.
