There have been numerous articles posted over the past few months talking about the rumor of Apple removing the 3.5mm jack. If you look back at those articles, the numbers of responses are astounding and the vast majority of responses are from people furious about the potential (probably imminent) 3.5mm jack removal.

The 3.5mm jack is a universal standard across laptops, automobiles, desktops, music players, stereos, mobile phones, tablets, even in-seat audio jacks on most passenger airlines. Removing this standard is a complete slap in the face to millions of consumers who have spent a lot of money on high quality headphones, earbuds, speakers, etc. that all use the 3.5mm standard.

I know people love to compare removing the 3.5mm jack to eliminating the old floppy or CD, but those were upgrades to new standards embraced by the entire computer industry as a move forward in technology and convenience.

If removed, Apple will have taken away a reliable open standard, replacing it with their proprietary standard, and I'm confident virtually no other equipment manufacture will ever embrace Lightning (I'm not talking about headset/earbud manufactures, I'm talking about other desktop, laptop, tablet, stereo, phone, automobile, music player, and aircraft manufactures). You are never going to see widespread acceptance of Lightning on other devices.

With this potential bonehead decision Apple does not move us forward, they lock us into a standard they control/own and move us away from the mainstream into a segregated solution that is not even available on Apple’s own computer line ... which coincidently uses the 3.5mm audio jack.

So what might Apple give us in return, maybe they shave a faction of a millimeter (bid deal) from the phone's thickness, and/or maybe we get a second (or better) speaker because they want us to believe we need some kind of so-called “stereo sound”. It’s pathetic!

Give us back the 3.5mm jack and keep your second/improved speaker. We don’t need a so-called stereo in our pockets.

Very well said, +1.

Also unlike the removal of floppy, dvd drives, firewire, etc, those formats were on a sharp decline already when Apple made the move, and the move was to a viable open replacement. Here, there is no evidence that 3.5mm is on the decline and the move is to a wholly untested closed replacement.

Will get it cheaper next year when the iPhone 8 launches. Sure, its a want I would love to have, but not one I need to have especially after spending nearly a thousand dollars on the 6s.

I think apple feel the future is wireless - for everything.
They have added the free adapter to keep folks like you and me (the 10% of iPhone non earbud users) happy(ish) so we can use our own earphones. In my case 8 year old trusty life time guarantee Koss PortaPro.
I'm getting used to the idea.

Perhaps but i'll be surprised if Apple doesn't sell how high quality of audio you get with lightning. So if they're going to brag about how good that connection is...

"- No headphone jack, with Apple providing both Lightning EarPods and a Lightning to 3.5 mm jack adapter in the box."

yeah, just like rMB came with an adapter in box for using regular USB... Oh wait.

No way in hell Apple will give you one for free when it can sell you one for 30 dollars.

As there is no way for me to link my phone to my car and charging too (I do that often as I drive a lot and like to listen to audiobook during), I'm out this Gen, might give Android a try finally

How is it possible that the A10 is such an increase over the A9, which is a beast and was also a huge increase in power over the A8? The A9 is still killing bench mark tests a year later. And now the A10 is going to kill the A9?!?!?!?

And will we get an A10x in the iPads soon? My Air 2 flys already. Feels faster than my iMac and my 2015 PC Laptop. If I can get an A10x in an iPad Pro I might have to think about that as a Desktop replacement. Crazy.

That's the difference between an engineers point of view and the consumer. Sure a few mm here and there is great to add more of what we already have. But getting rid of the headphone jack will add pain to many that they didn't have and what will they get, maybe a slightly nicer speaker or better haptic feedback? I don't feel like the trade off is valid.

I'm sure apple will sell it as high quality audio and all kinds of lies though. I personally am not upgrading this time around so am avoiding the whole issue, maybe next year the headphone jack trend might have yielded some alternatives. Something that matches the quality and convenience of the 3.5mm headphone jack without the need for compromises like adapters or bluetooth. There is a certain ease with which airplay audio already works but i really don't want another mac only product especially beats.

A survey was done recently and the majority of general consumers don't care.

I don't care about the headphone jack because I have Bluetooth headphones.

Sold. Just really wish it had fast charging or wireless charging or even both.but fast charging was something I reaaaallly wanted. My time with the S7 series made me really enjoy rapid charging.

Let's hope they recognize that since they've made the plus the "model to get" they adjust manufacturing to counter the increase in that models sales.

True, but from my 5S, it's sure more than enough. As it would be from a 6 and a 6S, I believe.

Agreed. This will be a fantastic upgrade for some users! Not everyone has an iPhone 6s right now.

I look forward to iPhone 6,5s,5/C,4s users upgrading so they can enjoy the Benefits 2gb of ram on iOS (let alone all the other upgrades from their prior device)

This actually sounds like a decent upgrade, if true. The upgraded earpiece for stereo sound is much more likely than a second speaker at the bottom imo. Not sure if I can believe both "dark black" and "piano black" being new colors at the same time though.
The "Dark Black" simply looks like the darker version of Space Gray we've seen already on Apple Watch and the MacBook. That's the one I'll be getting.

I don't think the A10 will be as fast as specified in the article.

The iPhone 6's A8 was barely any faster than the iPhone 5s's A7, as the clock rate only differed by 100 MHz. Apple itself even said the performance difference was pretty minimal (20-30%).

I'm looking at patterns here, which Apple tends to follow sometimes, so my hypothesis is that the A10 will be around as fast as the A9, only with a minor performance improvement in both CPU and GPU.

No, I'm not from the future and I may be wrong, but this is what I'm feeling.

iPhone 4s to iPhone 5 => 2x faster

iPhone 5 to iPhone 5s => 2x faster

iPhone 5s to iPhone 6 => ~1.30x faster

iPhone 6 to iPhone 6s => ~1.70x faster (2x as fast as iPhone 5s)

iPhone 6s to iPhone 7 => (~1.30x faster)?

iPhone 7 to iPhone 7s => (~1.70x faster)? (2x as fast as iPhone 6s)?

There is no evidence, because no one bothered to look for some. It might as well be the least used port on this planet as far as i know.

I meant do they turn out to be true likely. Cause I thought the dual camera rumour was put to rest.
Dual camera is virtually certain. But only on the larger model.

20-30% is huge. Have you seen the measly performance gains of Intel'S annual refreshes lately? (Closer to 5%)
