In a wide-ranging commentary piece about why now is a bad time to buy a new iPhone, The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that the iPhone 7 will start with 32GB of storage, replacing the infamous 16GB base tier offered since the iPhone 3GS.
The bump from 16GB to 32GB of entry-level storage has already been widely rumored by multiple Asian sources connected with Apple's supply chain, but confirmation from The Wall Street Journal makes the claim much more credible.

Two of the three storage options for iPhone 7 will likely be 32GB and 128GB, while multiple sources have said that at least the larger Plus-sized 5.5-inch model will be available with 256GB of storage. It is unclear if the 4.7-inch model will also have a 256GB storage option. The current storage options for both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus include 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB.

The Wall Street Journal previously confirmed that the iPhone 7 will have a thinner iPhone 6s-like design with no headphone jack and improved waterproofing. Other rumored features include a faster Apple A10 processor, repositioned antenna bands, faster LTE and Wi-Fi, and camera improvements, possibly including a dual-lens camera (and 3GB of RAM) exclusive to the 5.5-inch model.

Give it a year before you're all complaining about 32 GB.

We can only hope this is True. Lets also hope that 64GB option starts at only $50 more, but, I may be too greedy here.

They just waited to people who bought the 32/64 GB models, had enough data on their phones, that they still have to buy the upgrade. Like me, I am just over the 32GB.

I prefer these options before you fixed your typo.

Now that the 32gb base model will be available two years too late, it is just in time for 32gb to now be a painful experience with live photos and 4K video and the next highest tier (128gb) will be $149 higher like the iPads are now.

Looks like Apple is finally starting to read 2010 responses from the Apple Feedback page.

"infamous 16GB base tieroffered since the iPhone 5."

Even the iPhone 4 started with 16 GB. 8GB version came later as a cheaper option.

They know their iPhone is popular and even though none of the other major companies could pull off 16GB the last couple years...Apple does.

    I welcome the change!

Sadly there is nothing 'new'... just the typical faster/slimmer/more memory 'expected' features. Still in the rumor mill for now, so there is hope.

I've been buying the 64GB model since the iPhone 4S because I was always over 16GB, but usually just barely. A few years later, I doubt I could survive with anything less than 50GB... so I'm still stuck with the up sell.

It is projected that there won't be a 64 GB version, only 32 and 128 GB (and 256 GB but possibly only on the 5.5" version). The incentive to upgrade from 32 GB to 128 GB will still be strong as 'only' $100 more gives you four times as much storage. You have to leave it to them, Apple is good at getting your money.
