Nope. The "S" cycle is always a much larger improvement. Don't be fooled just because it looks the same.
Even there's different on the outside, 6.9 vs 7.1 due to the function it adds.
So in another way, "the only thing that changed its everything" it's a totally true statement.:)

Presumably it's necessary to remove the 3.5 socket in the search for waterproofness.. and that's also assuming the Lightning port itself can be made waterproof..
Nope.

Apple has been doing a ton of R&D in this field:

What would I do to use Square if they get rid of the headphone port? I know the new chip reader is Bluetooth but still.
They'd have to have a Lightning Port version.

If Apple starts worrying about the non-Apple add-on suppliers for what they do, then they're doomed to the Microsoft "We must make everyone happy from DOS 1.0 on forward" bloating.

However, Apple can be forthcoming with their plans to Square and the anemometer makers and such, and help them to make newer accessories.

Actually, a waterproof 3.5mm jack can be designed as well. It's just that when things are designed, allowances have to be made to the extreme uses. (i.e. :apple: Watch isn't waterproof, but in the first edition was put in pools, dropped in syrup, etc. The consumer specs are the absolute minimum they have to achieve.)

Apparently I'm the only one who quite likes the antenna bands. I love the contrast of the white band against the gold frame. I'm not saying I would miss them if they were gone, but I do quite like them.

Same with the protruding camera, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Also, many of the phones are having a camera sticks out too. It just a thing that this generation of smartphones have...

Then why remove the 3.5 socket?

Their relentless and misguided pursuit of extreme thinness?
Maybe you should stop buying into rumors as if they are reality.

Apple is researching a ton of different ways to slim down the jack when not in use:

Catcher Technology will remain the largest chassis supplier for the upcoming line of next-generation iPhones, tentatively referred to as the "iPhone 7," according to the China-based Commercial Times (via DigiTimes). Sources noted that Catcher's non-Apple clients, representing about 40 percent of its overall sales, will keep it going until the majority of its output begins with the manufacturing of the iPhone 7 later in 2016. In total, Catcher Technology's manufacturing supply is estimated to account for 30 to 35 percent of the shipment numbers for the iPhone 7.

The report also mentioned the continuing rumor that the iPhone 7 may be a completely waterproof device, building on the recent momentum that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus had this year that showed improved water resistance. The Commercial Times also spoke of "new compound materials" that would be put in place to form a discreet housing for the iPhone 7's antenna, suggesting the possible removal of the bands from the back of the current iPhone generation.

As a non S-generation year, the iPhone 7 is expected to be a big step-up from the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, in terms of design and functionality, when it launches next year. Besides a waterproof design and now the possibility of a hidden antenna band, another rumor suggested Apple could be phasing out the 3.5mm headphone jack for an all-in-one Lightning connector port.

I hope the 'all in one' Lightning connector port rumors are false.
This is a bad thing on many levels. First is removing access to all the earphones and speakers in existence now. Second I need to charge AND listen to music at the SAME TIME. How will you do this with only one port? Bad idea.

I can't say enough just how much I love that comp. If the shortcut buttons are there in on the screen and you can customize them, man, I will die. Well, I won't, but i will be happy.

I was under the delusion that this was a forum for discussing rumours..
I'm dreadfully sorry, and apologise unreservedly.

Sorry, my post was definitely worded in a way that sounded dismissive, that wasn't my intention.

What I meant was using one rumor as a launching point to assess another rumor doesn't make sense. We can certainly talk about these in the hypothetical, but the wording (it's so tricky to get right on the internet, my post being a case in point) you were using was almost a declaration of the removal of the port rather than discussing it hypothetically.

Sorry for any confusion there.

Hide those hideous 6/6s antenna bands: tick!

Now just make the camera lens flush with the back, and shrink the bezels, making the overall device size smaller...
And THEN I will upgrade from my 5s.
And Touch ID goes where?

You can use a case and simultaneously solve both the ugly antenna band and rear camera bulge "problems."

Apple needs to focus on the waterproofing and integrating the home button into the display like that mockup.

I hope it doesn't look anything like that mockup as I think it's fugly. All this graphic "designer" did was take the existing home button (with metal ring to boot) and move it inside the display and then shrunk the top and bottom bezels. Of course that's easy to do when it's just a computer mockup and doesn't actually have to be engineered.

Wireless charging.

Mind you Apple will not mention that with iPhone 7. Regular releases of iPhones are beta phones. S model iPhones are stable iPhones. Idk why people spend money on the non S models when the s models last for years. iPhone 4s as an example.

3.5 jacks is a technology that I'm hoping would die for better interface with headphones and Aux plugs. It causes a lot of distortion and the dam headphones never last when using them.

Make the iPhone home button similar to the Galaxy Note home button, or integrate touch ID into the screen.

Just because you can't get past the tick-tock of aesthe- you know what, never mind. There's nothing that's going to undo the level of ignorance to hardware engineering this post displays.
