I never bought the Note 7 because I bought a Note 5 in January so it was too soon to upgrade already. I also bought a S7 Edge. Both of these were just so amazing and when the iPhone 7 was announced, it was just so bland. I used to get buy every iPhone model starting from the original. The iPhone 5 was the first one I skipped, then the 6 and now the 7 yet I have no doubt that I'll be buying the next Note and S8 Edge in the new year. To be fair, I do have a 6S and 6S+.

I'm glad Apple is waiting and taking their time with the redesign. Remember - Apple is ever first, but always the best.

People get upset over a headphone jack, but not over an exploding phone. And yet people question the values of Apple and not Samsung.

I would argue the dual camera / telescopic zoom is a major feature as the jump in camera quality between the 6s is quite large.

I'll tag on to those points... the cameras alone for me so far put it - the 7+ is miles ahead of the 6s+. I'm satisfied with my upgrade. Sold my 6s+ on eBay last week for $550.

I really think that many people have a completely unrealistic and almost silly level of expectation from Apple.

One company simply isn't going to put out a killer phone with a plethora of astonishing and earth shattering technology each and every year. Unless Apple are in possession of a crashed alien space ship and are choosing to steal and release technology from the future in chunks, it's not going to happen.

I don't think that any one company could do that. Think about how little time you have to research, prototype, test, perfect, then produce millions in time for launch. Not going to happen. Or if you do do that, you end up with a situation like the infamous exploding phone, where things were rushed just to be first to market.

As for this market led obsession with growth, that maybe isn't going to happen all the time too. There are only so many people who can buy the latest smart phone every single year. You can't expect Apple to not only put out brand new killer technology each and every year, but also double their sales numbers every year too.

Oh and what's that Donald Trump? You also want them to be made in the USA and come in solid gold, yet be affordable to the masses? Also not going to happen.

Hate to agree, but as someone who has owned every iPhone on day one since the first, this is my first year not getting the new iPhone because there was nothing significant enough about it to warrant a purchase.

Hopefully Apple can step it up next year with an amazing phone, but from the mixed bag of current rumors im not holding my breath.

I'm in the same boat. I came close to getting one, but after holding my brothers new 7+ I saw no real difference and in fact the new dual lens camera performed worse in low light than my 6S+.

FWIW this is just my opinion / take on the subject.

Apple was on the hunt for a smaller port on the iPhone before USB-C was ratified, and chose to skip (thank Heavens) Micro USB in favor of a robust, reversible connector of it's own. I think / hope the writing is on the wall for them to move iOS into USB-C, but they didn't want to do two big port changes on their flagship phone in the same year. Had Apple ditched the 3.5 and switched to USB-C on the Phone in a single year, I wonder how much more backlash they would have received on the changes. Once / if apple moves to USB-C on the phone, it will make another round of big waves in the peripheral market.

Perhaps they should have ripped the bandaid off in one year, as opposed to prolonging the pain, that is, if any of this happens.

I seriously doubt Apple would move iDevices to USB-C. The lightning ports generate a lot of money for them (licenses and accessories) where as they would have to pay to license USB-C. MacBooks and iMacs are a different story however.

Considering the amount of profit Apple makes, they are in real trouble if they can't keep people upgrading every year. The phone market is changing and Apple will either have to innovate (hardware or software) or reduce margins to stay ahead. There is no reason to make excuses for Apple, the company has trouble figuring out what to do next since Tim Cook died.

What in the ever loving **** are you talking about? Apple is well aware that they have a roughly 3 year complete turnover cycle across their consumers, they've said as much in the investors meetings (go look it up). That's how they approach their releases.

The phone market is changing....how? Like, right now who's doing anything different? They're all solid slabs with a screen. No one has flexible devices out now, so what is this change you're discussing that Apple hasn't caught on to?

Suit yourself. Then why tether your head to what is sometimes in your pocket, sometimes on the desk charging, sometimes in your jacket?
Uh, privacy. Not disturbing those around you. Concentration. The basest argument is it's an accepted form of use for wired headphones, while a wired headphone connected to a watch on someone's arm is a pretty stupid idea. Prolly why no one does it anymore. I gotta be honest with you. Discussing a headphone jack in relation to a watch seem absurd in it's premise alone. Let's just agree that I think it's not analogous to a headphone jack in a phone or laptop. We'll also agree that you somehow think it's applicable.

The dual camera is the only compelling feature for me in the iPhone 7. Didn't sway me to come back to iOS from Android. But Google's Pixel isn't that compelling either. I'm pretty happy with my Galaxy S7 and am interested in both the next Pixel and the next iPhone. . . . . .

i don't buy phones for the camera. All of the cameras in recent iPhones have been good enough. If I want a good camera I'll use a real camera, you know one with an optical zoom lens, changeable lenses, changeable settings, etc., not the throw away un-controllable camera in an iPhone.

If Apple introduced an iPhone 7 that was significantly slower with no water resistance, stereo speakers or dual lens camera; removed 3D Touch, the Taptic Engine and secure enclave; increased the resolution but lacked wide color gamut, wrapped it in a lackluster design that's a mashup of the 4, 5 and 6, and priced it the same as the 6s, Apple would have been murdered by the press. But when Google did it? Instant praise.

Moral of the story: Dont believe everything you read. Despite painting Apple as lacking in innovation while praising Samsung and Google, Apple has quietly built up a technological lead to the point where one could now make the case that there's a premium brand - iPhone - and everything else... the media's worst nightmare.

I was gonna jump to note 7 but you know..... I would have stayed with Apple ip7 plus if it wasn't making hissing noise.

If you need a DAC in-phone to use with analog headphones (as many, many people do), there isn't a good alternative to the headphone jack.

Huh? Are you aware that the iPhone has speakers and still has a DAC? There is a fine alternative- the dongle they include with the device.

Geez, who wants to haul around all that crap on a holiday when the iPhone 7 and 7+ have fantastic cameras built-in ... man I'll just never understand it ... it's like every amateur thinks they're going to win NG's Photo of the Year.

I would gladly switch to a Pixel from iOS if Dexcom would get off their butts and release a native CGM app for Android.

The only reason I upgraded was to go from a 4.7 inch screen to 5.5. And the removal of the headphone jack forced me to start using wireless headphones, which had been great.

...Are you not aware of the much larger speakers on the 7?

Just my opinion, I would much rather have a headphone jack than better speakers on my phone.

I know everyone uses their devices differently, but I don't think I ever use the speakers on my phone. Maybe for the occasional speaker phone call, but never music.

That's great and all about your opinion, but the fact remains the new (much improved speaker) takes up all the extra space that the headphone jack would have, so maybe you want to walk back your comment about "nor did they use the space for other items"?

it was proven that was a lie. They didn't need to remove the headphone jack to be waterproof nor did they use the space for other items.
What are you Maury?

Maury: "When asked Apple about that headphone jack if it was a move to save space, the lie detector determined that was a lie"

I get that, but is this something people were asking for?
*Serious question....
