There's a difference between not being able to spent $100-$300 more than you usually spend and not being able to put ANY money towards a new phone.

Whether the iPhone is $400 or $900, you have more important things going on to worry about and pay for.
Sure there is.

Doubt Intels latest offering is going to be up to Qualcomms standards and there no chance of a Qualcomm modem..
That is my fear as well.

I can get an iPhone 7 for $99 on contract. If the 7s falls into that slot, I'm good to go.

I need a new phone. My 6 is at 40% battery by the time I get to work.

Hopefully it won't support CDMA, so we'll still have a Qualcomm option. After the experience I had with this Intel iPhone 7, I'll never buy a phone with an Intel cellular radio ever again.
I just looked my phone up, and I guess I have the Intel chip, too. I haven't noticed any real-world difference between now and when I had the Qualcomm chip in previous models.

Do you see a big difference, or are you basing this off of testing that was reported a year ago (so, bias)?

Man, imagine there ends up being no iPhone 8 announcement? Just the 7s.

The internet will just collapse.
With this site being the epicentre and receiving the worst... best? Of the fallout and subsequent human-suffering of course :D

I am a little worried about this as well. I hope that the 7s isn't an afterthought with just a processor and ram upgrade and thats it.
not trolling but what do you expect on the S models to have? I always get the S models because of the camera and processor upgrades - I am not expecting anything different this time.

I'm on the fence. I am on the S upgrade cycle and have been happy upgrading since my first iPhone (4S). I felt like every two years I got a nice spec upgrade as well as hardware and feature changes. If the 7S isn't more than the 7 I probably won't upgrade. If the 8 is too much price, I might bail as well and hold out another year.
That's where I am at this point. The only reason I really feel the need for an upgrade would be for better battery life and to get back on the Qualcomm radio. Maybe a higher-res screen.

I really have no interest in whatever AR/VR/whatever-R tech might be coming nor do I want to forego Touch ID for some kind of face unlock, no matter how fast or easy it is. I want to control when my phone unlocks with my finger. And frankly, I like the edges of my iPhone. Take them away and there's nowhere left to grab it that doesn't inadvertently tap something.

If the "7s" brings a substantial battery life improvement or some other unannounced and surprise feature that we didn't anticipate, I'll reconsider. But if it's just the A11 and a Qi coil...no thanks, not worth $700+.

It's all location dependent. If you live in an urban area with multiple towers it's no big deal, but if you're in the country like I am, it makes a difference whether you can have decent internet speeds, let alone being able to make a call or not.

Wow, are they really going to use the same Intel modem? That is disappointing.

I have the 7 Plus Intel version, and it is definitely weaker in low bar areas compared to my gf's 6S. Wish I had waited to buy the unlocked Qualcomm. I'd suggest people do the same if you're due for an upgrade.

This is a luxury item - no one needs to buy one at all and believe it or not your entire world will not fade away if you choose not to.....in fact for this sort of money you could make a good stab towards something far more worthwhile like learning an instrument or a new language, travelling or taking up a sport...

That is my fear as well.

Just re read the article. Seems that they might continue to use Qualcomm and Intel as modem suppliers. If so Qualcomms modem will likely be throttled to bring it in line with the Intel models as they did on the iPhone 7

Yes. I came from an iPhone 6s that had the Qualcomm chipset and it worked fine at my old office. When I upgraded to the 7, in the same location I'd frequently have calls where the person on the other side couldn't hear me intermittently like the signal was dropping out and the data speed was actually slower. It got so bad that I couldn't even use the phone as a phone most of the time, especially for important calls for work.

I'm not sure if its worth upgrading or not, right now I got the 7 plus 128gb using the qualcomm Verizon model that I have running on T-Mobile. Its very fast and fluid, not sure what the real world benefits are this time around by getting a 7s or 8 or iPhone Pro or whatever they gonna call it.

I used to get a new Android or iPhone every few months because I've always been into trying out new stuff, but this time it seems innovation has slowed down considerably the past couple years and all we get is small spec upgrades. Even the Note 8 isn't that exciting to me, it seems like its just an S8 Plus with a stylus.

Hopefully the don’t use an inferior modem, again

Looks like the same tier they used last year (not sure if Intel refreshes annually, so may not be the exact same model number).

What I am hoping in them keeping the same lower tier modem is that they may put the best modem in the 8, which I will likely be buying hah.

I would be double pissed if they put the same modems in all. Although tbh, that's the most likely scenario considering it's apple.

Its a disgrace really. Just like with the iPad „Pro“ they are going to charge more for something that used to get better naturally while selling a weaker „new“ device for the same current price.

But unless stupid people (myself included) still buy it ... it wont change

If you wait a few weeks after release for the sim-free (no carrier) version from apple.com, you will get the one with the Qualcomm modem. 99% sure the unlocked one will be Qualcomm because it supports both GSM and CDMA.
