Wait time out.

The bottom of the iPhone 6 and 6s have two holes on the bottom, one for the mic and one for the speaker.

The grille on the iPhone 7 won't be 'empty.' Just a larger mic hole vs the pin hole on the iPhone 6

Nothing new here.
Even cars have dual exhaust exits but only one with an actual exhaust pipe...

Age of the looks fellas...

Apples and oranges.. To remove headphone jack and replace it with nothing is a slap in the face to loyal customers

The other article about the display components connecting at the bottom suggests that the removed the headphone port and moved things internally into that space so they had room for the new camera module at the top of the device.

It must be some monster camera, optical zoom coming to all iPhone 7's?

Please realize that Apple has been putting superfluous "speaker" holes in iPhones on and off for almost 10 years. The iPhone 1 and iPhone 5/5S/5SE all had "cosmetic speaker holes" in them. But now somehow people are disgusted and flabbergasted by it.

Perhaps because in the past something very, very useful was not being removed and replaced with holes. Past holes were just cosmetic- like the colors of the phone. This time, people are losing something pretty useful and thoroughly ubiquitous and getting holes plus maybe an adapter "tail" hanging out of the bottom. Even the "Apple is always right" crowd is having to work overtime to keep trying to rationalize this one to their fellow consumers.

How about we wait until September to find out what benefits and costs this move will have. All we know right now is the cost, and you're ASSUMING the benefit is "nothing" and deeming it a "slap in the face" because we don't know the whole picture yet. Do you honestly think Tim or Phil are going to walk on stage and go "we removed the headphone jack, and in its place, are 6 additional ornamental holes that do nothing"?

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath - everyone's talking about their minds being boggled, a slap in the face, this being a crazy move and a betrayal of good design. That we're losing something is a near certainty - but we have no idea what the actual tradeoff (benefits) will be.

Even the assumption that Apple is greedy and wants to make money off of dongles isn't rational. iPhones are 60 percent of their revenue and dongles are likely <1%; they wouldn't risk one for the other.

Doesn't seem very Apple-like. Even if the holes were pointless I'm sure they'd spin some story about how the extra holes create some kind of balance or something.
