If this is true, it seems counter to Jony Ive's overtures about a material or product needing to 'be true to itself'. There's nothing less 'true' about a purely cosmetic feature appearing to be something it isn't.

Absolutely agree. In addition to breaking this important rule of design -- which is a rule of general applicability -- this would run counter to the philosophy actually espoused by Apple's design chief. If this is true, something is seriously wrong at Apple.

Perhaps because in the past something very, very useful was not being removed and replaced with holes. Past holes were just cosmetic- like the colors of the phone. This time, people are losing something pretty useful and thoroughly ubiquitous and getting holes plus maybe an adapter "tail" hanging out of the bottom. Even the "Apple is always right" crowd is having to work overtime to keep trying to rationalize this one to their fellow consumers.

Wait wait wait.... not having a headphone jack is an entirely different discussion from including dummy speaker holes. Case in point, the iPhone 1 and 5 which had both a headphone jack AND dummy speaker holes. I'm not defending the removal of the headphone jack, I'm simply pointing out that dummy speaker holes have a long history at Apple. This is nothing new.

I'm not believing this article at all. It makes no sense to do this. If there are stereo speakers, Apple will probably touch on this at the September Keynote.

Apple will most likely have the second speaker functional with the microphone equipped.

Except they've done this already with the iPhone 1 and iPhone 5/5S/5SE. Sorry that doesn't fit the template of "something is seriously wrong at Apple", but it's the truth - unless you are arguing something has been seriously wrong at Apple for the last 10 years.

There will be two speakers but it won’t be stereo.

Hasn't anyone else noticed something weird about this rendering? I can believe that Apple would drill holes (through holes or in this case blind holes) in the bottom of the case for cosmetic reasons - the OUTSIDE of the case. Why in the world would anyone drill matching blind holes on the INSIDE of the case?

so much disappointment in this model already. I don't think I remember a time when people were as negative about upcoming iphone leaks as this year.

I guess I accidentally picked the right year to not upgrade. Was going to upgrade this year but ended up getting married, going on a honeymoon etc. Sticking with the same iPhone it looks like!

OMG!! If this is true, everything I ever thought of Apple is just wrong.
Please don't let this be true.

For all those bemoaning the loss of 3.5mm jack, wireless headphones have over taken wired headphones in revenue for the first time in June. 54% to 46% of all sales dollars...a 42% year over year increase. While only 17% of unit sales, the writing is on the wall. Headphone and earpiece manufacturers are going to follow the profit, not the units...

https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/28/npd-headphones/amp/

not much unlike apple's dominance in revenue vs unit sales compared to android.

This is all occurring before the removal of the feature, my guess is the sales/revenue data has been pointing to this flip for awhile now and the tipping point has been reached...it's a wireless future and the only bottom commodity feeders will play in the wired headphone/earbud world....again not much different than the android or pc market.

I'm old enough to remember the change from albums to cd's and cassettes to cd's...arguments could be made to the sound quality or durability of the replaced tech, but the trade off of better sound quality of cassettes and better portability than albums was enough to shift all manufacture's to the CD hardware world. Only extreme audiophiles held against the change. The masses and the profit moved on.

People will cry about money, investment etc....I know I did...I owned at least 300 cassettes and 100's of albums...yet I eventually rebought a good portion of it on cd over time. People will buy wireless no matter how many $300 headphones they own eventually.

Apple isn't doing much different here, the money will be in wireless for the foreseeable future and they happen to own a headphone/earbud brand that will profit from that trend change.

Hardcore audiophiles will cry, adapt, rig, and sacrifice to keep all their "best" quality setups but the masses will move on for the freedom of having no cord...

I can sympathize and agree with many points of every argument against keeping the port...but money talks and the manufacturers know the money is in wireless now.

Nothing new here.
Even cars have dual exhaust exits but only one with an actual exhaust pipe...

Age of the looks fellas...

Oh my heck... I mean I've seen fake dual exhausts before, but that's a flipping AMG Merc. That's a cop-out of biblical proportions. Unless the AMG badge is fake too...

I didn't say you were. I was simply offering my rationale for why people...

are disgusted and flabbergasted by it.

That's my guess: not that Apple is adding cosmetic holes but that they are getting those holes at the expense of jettisoning the ubiquitous, "just works" headphone jack. I'm disgusted and flabbergasted about it's removal too. New holes (or no new holes) don't play into those feelings at all.

This would not be new for Apple. Didn't iPhone 4 appear to have dual speakers cosmetically but only one actual speaker? Seems like I recall something else too that had the same appearance of dual speakers but only had one? Maybe one of the iPad models?

Yes your right. The iphone 4 and 4s had that. I really hope they do stereo sound though. Seems like they are putting a lot of emphasis on that with pro models. Maybe this will only be a iphone 7plus feature.

They would remove headphone jack and not replace it with NOTHING, and that's not a big deal?? APPLE HAS EVERYONE hypnotized
I feel like your capitalization is working against your statement in that second sentence.

This may sound like sarcasm but it's not: is there actually any benefit to having two speakers that close together?
Eh, increased volume maybe?

b/c it won't fit on the next iPhone, and they'd rather have the bad publicity on a phone they know is not going to sell as well.
Read a article yesterday that basically stated that the headphone removal is going to be done this year so that all the negative opinions will be about this phone and not next years 10th anniversary phone. Not sure if I believe they would make such a bold move, but we will see
