I suspect they're shot themselves in the foot. They're high prices to pay for the 8 and people will not want to pay those prices to feel like they've gotten second best. On the other hand, the price of the X is I suspect too high for most people so they will go neither. On the other hand there are the numerous similar phones which are touted as equally premium but are significantly more affordable. I would think the competition will pick up quite a few people as the easy and sensible choice.

I'm certainly in the above camp. I have been waiting enthisiasticaly for the launch because I'm getting to the point where I will need to replace my iPhone 5. The 8 is not the phone I've waited all this time for but $1829 (Oz prices) is just obscene for the X. Where are consumers like me supposed to go?
buy 7;)

People are probably holding off till the iPhone X is released to see whether they want it or the 8.

In the short run, it may mean fewer phones sold this quarter. But I predict Apple will probably still sell as many, if not more phones for the entire financial year.

Not to mention the expected increase in ASP brought about by the iPhone X.

Only question is if Apple can make enough iPhone X to meet demand or if this will be another Airpods situation. Not to mention that by March next year, people may just decide to hold off till the next iPhone refresh.

Yeah im holding off 8 because want try X in a store first before deciding, still i think it was bad move to release it so much later, the apple stores could atleast got demo models

A day after Apple began accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and Apple Watch Series 3, the first orders have shifted to "preparing for shipment" ahead of a promised Friday, September 22 delivery date.

Apple began preparing Apple Watch Series 3 orders starting yesterday afternoon, while the order status of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus appears to have started changing this afternoon. Apple TV 4K orders have not yet updated to preparing for shipment, but that should happen soon.

Pre-orders for all three devices started at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, September 15. While some SIM-free and T-Mobile iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models sold out relatively early for home shipping, supplies of other devices have remained strong. It should be no problem to pop into an Apple Store on launch day and pick up an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus.

It may be more difficult to get one of the new Apple Watch Series 3 models with LTE connectivity, as several configurations did sell out and list shipment dates of a few weeks. In-store pickup is also unavailable for these models. Non-LTE models are, however, readily available.

Orders that have been updated to "preparing for shipment" status should begin officially shipping out over the course of the next day or two. The first orders will arrive on Friday, September 22, with customers in New Zealand and Australia being among the first to get their hands on the new devices.

Update: Apple TV 4K orders have now started shifting to Preparing for Shipment too.

Ordered at 3:10 am Nike LTE Watch and still says October 5th

My wife's 8+ shows "order processing". I'm not concerned. Will update Monday or Tuesday to shipped.

I'm waiting on the X

What I am about to say, had I been at r/Apple I’d get downvoted to oblivion but I don’t know why I have this gut feeling that tells me that I wouldn’t have much problem getting my hands on X before x’mas.

I’m probably wrong, pease don’t hate me, heck even I am waiting to see X in person just so I can decide between 8Plus and X.

Outside the USA, I think it’s generally priced over 1500$+.
Where I am at, it’s 1590$ for X 256GB (taxes included) and that’s without AppleCare, fast chargers or the wireless pad. Add the rest off it and price balloons up quite a bit.

Now I know a lot of fans will buy it immediately, and it’s probably worth the asking price but thinking as a general consumer, it might be a hard sell to the casual user without the need for the latest and the greatest.

Anyway, it’ll be very interesting to see what happens.

(Please don’t take this as a hate towards Apple and follow me up with insults, I’m just saying what’s on my mind and am probably wrong anyway)

There is nothing wrong with your opinion and to be honest, in some respects you might be correct. If somebody truly wants the iPhone X, then they will likely pre-order almost immediately and perhaps might have it quicker than expected. But that would also is based on if Apple has enough stock. I'm hoping that this elongated wait for the pre-orders for October 27, will give enough production time to meet some of the demand come November 3 when the iPhone starts to ship.

I'm not expecting it in the 3rd but I'd love it a few weeks later if possible. Before Christmas for sure

Probably one of the weakest launches in recent history.

All iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models available in 1-2 weeks.

I predict the same situation that happened in 2016 where Tim Cook's pay was reduced due to lower than expected demand for the iPhone 6S.

My thoughts exactly. The launches of 8 and 8 Plus are looking to be a big embarrassment for Tim / Apple.

They have egg on their face with this one.

I am staying out of the iPhone upgrades this year as many will do in Europe. The prices are crazy! I got my iPhone 6 at E700 ($770 at the exchange rate from that time). Now the prices for iPhone 8 are starting from E840 (over $1000  - this is almost 30% percent more)... They raised the prices in Europe when the dollar was low in respect to Euro but they forgot to lower them now when the exchange rate is pretty much the same as 4 years ago.
I suspect that many people will refrain from the upgrade for the same reason. More and more Apple is establishing a pricing policy that will alienate the part of the users that are not in its core fan base.

Agree - I will celebrate 10 years of bezel legacy with my good old 6S.
The best place to stow away earphone plugs, anyway.

Lame update for the 8. Meanwhile a much better option is coming next month. The weak launch is well expected.

I will upgrade when Iphone 5x will come out. The large format is too big. Maybe good for American hands and pockets. We have elegant, minimalistic pockets here in Europe.

My order seems on track, ordered just after 8am on Friday, waiting patiently for the iPhone X.

Ordered 2 iPhones but have 2 separate charges which makes it 3. Two for mine in one pending transaction and another pending transaction for another one I don't order.

Apple support is ridiculous with help. Will be pissed if that 2nd one posts on my card.

I predict the same situation that happened in 2016 where Tim Cook's pay was reduced due to lower than expected demand for the iPhone 6S.

Apple has now a solid lineup of phones starting from an unprecedented $349, up in a continuum to the iPhone X, which is a flagship, high-margin product that is going to be massively sought after.

Part of the halo of the flagship device will fall back to the lower cost alternatives, in a classic sour grapes situation ("the iPhone X? no, I'm not an hipster, I will get the ordinary 8").

Apple is going to sell many, many phones.

what happens to face id when in a year or two, samsungs starts putting fingerprint sensor behind screen.
