In 2009, iOS was way behind Symbian and still clearly behind Blackberry as well. Between 2009 and 2016, the global iOS marketshare (on an annual basis) varied between 13.5 and 19.1%.

Umm, something wrong with your chart? Android should be around 80%, iOS around 20%, and Windows should not be very big. More like this one at that link you gave:

If the September event comes round and all apple announce is an iPhone 7s in the same chassis I will be livid.

If a name excites you more than the merits of the product I think that says more about you. I've bought many great products which I can't even remember the name or it had some contrived number. I've also bought a lot of products with features that had cool names for 100% worthless features.

So are you a marketing fan or a tech fan? Genius features and styling get my attention, not names. Seems rather shallow to put that much stock in a product name.

The point of the name is to draw attention to a product. The name doesn't make the product but the 2 should go well together. A cool name doesn't mean a good product nor does a good product mean there's a good name attached. Most people here, myself included are drawn towards specs, but then again anyone on these forums pays 100x more attention to the product specs than the general consumer. I don't care what the name is for me, I am looking at it from a general consumer level and saying it's not an attractive name that gets people's attention. That's an important thing to consider for a company with dropping phone sales.

We could speculate a lot about Ive (especially what he spent his time on in the last 4 years...), but not about his work !

Sorry, but none of us were in the meetings, so yes, we all have to speculate - at best. We simply do not know what constraints he was under from TC or availability of parts or what the prototypes that didn't make it to production looked like or offered.

And again, as I said in my initial post on the Ive, he IS off leash right now. He needs someone like Jobs to push him. But the absence of that doesn't make him any less gifted.

The point of the name is to draw attention to a product.

Yes, it can have that effect, but once it draws the attention it still needs to be a good product. OTOH a good product sells with any name. I don't know if you were living when the iPod first came out but no one know what the heck the name meant. It sounded dorky. But it was a good product and survived despite it's name, even spawned the entire iDevice phenomena. But it wasn't the name that made the iPod. The iPod made the name.

Same thing happened with MacBook and MacBook Pro when Apple dropped the iBook and PowerBook names, respectively. MacBook and MacBook Pro names were initially mocked.

Yes and no.
One would think, as you said, that someone who paid $1k for a phone would keep it longer.
However, the iPhone is a status symbol in many parts of the world, and you don't want to be seen with an "older" iPhone. Yearly upgraders are not uncommon. Heck, look at Samsung. They intentionally release the S and Note series separately. People are actually buying those lock-step, more frequent than the normal yearly cycle. And this is actually not bad. Fashion is worse, where people spent thousands of dollars for a dress that they only wore once or twice.

Somewhat. The upgrade cycle for phones is slowing significantly, especially after the last two years. I'm just afraid that these consumers will hold onto their devices much longer than.

At least it’s better than using the word Pro to denote needless expensiveness without any true professional qualities, which is pretty much how things are now.
MacBook Pro Pro!
The pro version of the MacBook Pro :p

I think the term you are looking for here is "aspirational". Apple products have never been cheap, and not everyone will be able to afford them (as evidenced by their comparatively low market share).

Yet there is no shortage of people willing to pay for Apple products, because there are some things the rest of the competition just can't offer.

People have known this since day one, so I don't see why people are suddenly acting all shocked and raising a stink over it.
I'm not so sure... it used to be, few people had iPhones. I suppose popularity and subsidized phones helped that to the point now that many people and their teenage kids are using them. Granted, some kids (and adults alike) are using hand-me-down iPhones, or otherwise just springing for Iph from 2 to 3 generations prior (wasn't really possible before since Iph also held their value well. Now, 3 gen. prior is quite a difference in night and day in terms of features and performance). Perhaps Apple now wants to reinstigate the Iph's traditional status, and will do so with this "Iphone Edition"

The "Tim Cook Apple" is SOOOOO lost. I just can't see how they will EVER be able to afford the the building - with Tim Cook in charge. The new new phone thing sounds like a mad dash to come out with "something" in time.... with NO real direction. just sad to Apple spinning down the drain and rapidly now..... :(

I don't know about you guys... but I'm not in the US... float between Canada and Australia...and I'm feeling like iPhone prices today are already getting to ridiculous territory. I don't know if I can swallow spending a few hundred dollars more than today's prices for a phone that I'll use for 2 years maybe 3 if I'm lucky..
I can afford it for a few more years until my daughter starts college. But that doesn't mean I will be comfortable walking around with something that costly and fragile. My iPhone 7 Plus 256 GB was really pushing it.

I really do make use of the 128-256 GB capacity so I am having to start opening my mind to the different options in the Android world that offer expandable SD storage or generous specs at lower costs like the OnePlus 3T and possibly the LG G6.

Even the Samsungs are starting to get too expensive, unless you get a good deal.

I'd hate to move away from iOS because it definitely has some advantages I'd miss. Fortunely Apple got it right on my 7 Plus and I'm finally happy with the camera enough that I feel comfortable keeping it for two years. Unlike the single year I allotted to the 6 Plus and 6S Plus. My 6Plus was a dud. My 6S Plus was almost perfect as a smart phone, but I was never satisfied with the camera. I am totally satisfied with the 7Plus camera and the phone itself.

"And today we announce iPhone Edition, made from unobtainium, starting at just $9999. Shipping in 2019, since we didn't pick the prototype for mass production yet."
Tim Cook drops the mic.

Sad thing is it could cost $1,500+ and still be the best selling model.

Afford what? They are rolling in cash right now.

None of the iPhones this year will have OLED display.
None of the iPhones this year will ditch Home button.

In 2018 though, yes to both.

Is the big font supposed to add validity to your claims? I think it could go either way, people said this time last year that the headphone jack wasn't going anywhere and we saw how that turned out.

The "rumored" name sucks, but if it has support for capturing wide color in 10 bits, AND displaying 10-bit wide color, then it could be a very BIG hit, regardless of the name.

10-bit wide color would enable it to sync-up with 4K UHD TVs, many of which already have DCI-P3 10-bit support ... so, only a relatively-minor color space conversion would be necessary to display your iPhone 8 (Display P3) content on your 4K UHD TV, in all it's vivid colors.
And HDR. I could care less about 4K but wide color (especially if Apple can pull off full Rec.2020 support) and HDR woild be great.

Yes, i know.
It is really tiresome.
Some people should be a much better ceo.
Apple is lost, etc. Dadadada.
They really can' t handle choice. This are rumors. Not facts. Apple chooses to put the newest tech in a special edition iphone.

Why? Because they can' t make enough of them , they can' t produce enough to handle normal demand. And guess? Noone can. Not samsung, not anyone. Apple sells as much of his flagships in one weekend as samsung sells the s7 in the first 3 weeks.

And the smallest iphone should have the same tech as the bigger iphone. Really , do they understand tech? Come on!

What is in a name? Iphone edition, iphone x, really doesn' t matter. About $80 more expensive? Doesn' t matter for me , i will try to get one on opening day!

Why not just call it : iPhone 8 Pro Edition
I love the way that just rolls off the tongue.
Sounds more exciting .... I'm excited! :D
But hey, what's in a name. If the tech is decent then that's all that matters. :)

...oh wait, wait. One more naming option : iPhone 8 10th Anniversary Pro Edition
:p

Are you confusing the global marketshare graph with the one for the UK?
