Well whatever, I'm saying where the 5 years came from, you can try to increase that number if you want, but it's not relevant to the discussion.

It kind of is relevant. It speaks to how long Apple decided to keep a connector around before replacing it.

They changed the original connector after 5 years. The current connector has been around for 5 years. Its about time to upgrade everything to USB-C. It will also encourage companies to start making USB-C a standard for every device so Macbook Pros can be used with more devices without dongles sooner rather than later.

The original connector came from the iPod which started using it in 2003, although the iPhone used it from 2007-2011

Earlier this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said the widely rumored 5.8-inch iPhone with an OLED display will feature a Lightning connector with USB-C Power Delivery that enables fast charging capabilities.

Lending credence to that rumor, Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis today in a research note said the so-called "iPhone 8" will come bundled with a 10W power adapter with a USB-C connector and an integrated USB-C Power Delivery chip.

Curtis said the USB-C Power Delivery chips built into both the iPhone and 10W power adapter will be supplied by Cypress Semiconductor. The research note suggests it'll be the same CYPD2104 chip used in the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

An excerpt from the Barclays research note distributed to clients, obtained by MacRumors and edited slightly for clarity:Like the new 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the so-called "iPhone 8" would be capable of fast charging with a Lightning to USB-C cable connected to the new 10W power adapter or Apple's 29W USB-C power adapter for MacBook.

Apple will presumably include a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box if it's going in this direction, possibly instead of the traditional Lightning to USB cable. Apple could also opt to include a female USB-C to male USB-A adapter in the box.

Apple's current 5W Power Adapter for iPhone and 12W Power Adapter for iPad both have slower USB-A ports.

Given the "iPhone 8" is expected to have around a 2,700 mAh L-shaped two-cell battery pack, faster charging would be a welcomed addition. The device is also widely rumored to feature wireless charging on top.

[doublepost=1498713713][/doublepost]Apple would figure out a way to make USB-C non-standard and charge $50 for the cable.

Why can't they just move to using USB-C on the iPhone itself? Sure there will be some wailing and gnashing of teeth for a bit, but it'll finally standardize phone charging across the industry.
Because they can't licence the useage of USB-C and so would lose out on some money.

Lightning to USB-C, why not just stick a double ended USB-C and USB-C on the phone and be done with it...

As an Apple user, I don't care about cable compatibility with other manufacturers. I want compatibility across my Apple devices. So I hope Apple keeps lightning, so I can use the same cable to charge my family's iPhones, iPads, and AirPods. Making the new iPhone different will just cause cable confusion, lol!
As an apple user, I wish Apple used standard ports so that it is compatible with all my tech.

Problem is this will deem useless all the current USB charging methods like from laptop, non-usb-c macs, car ports etc

USB-C instead of A makes sense. They sell laptops with only USB-C ports now, so it is quite weird you can't charge the iPhone with your Macbook or MBP without using an adapter.
But the connector on the iPhone will be lighting as usual. I think they'll keep lighting for a long time, then remove the need for a cable in favour of a completely wireless phone or something like the smart connector on the iPad for charging and transferring data.

Sounds fake. Why would they include a faster wired charging solution just at the moment they're coming with a device with a wireless charging solution.

About time.

it's not just apple, but every manufacturer seems to be skimping on chargers in the box lately.

I don't want to wait 4-5 hours for my device to charge!

Surface Pro, Macbook Pro, iPad Pro - they all ship with chargers that are barely adequate.

It's about time Apple did this, most android phones (even the cheap ones) charge faster than an iPhone.

This is the first iPhone in a few years I am really excited for. The only thing Samsung has on iPhones right now, is Samsung pay and AMOLEDs. Samsung pay is effing amazing if you haven't tried it! Wish Apple would license it!

If we get a battery shaped around camera bulb, capacity will be OK
(saying something about the bulb, not the batt...)

Why not just use USB-C for iOS devices instead of creating this split between iOS and macOS devices? right now iOS uses lightning, and macOS uses USBC. Why not have one standard? USBC is the universal standard now.

If both lightning and USB-C were brand new with no existing devices, then yes USB-C would probably be preferable, but we’re not.

lightning came years before USB-C was developed and so switching requires a tangible benefit that offsets the significant impact any change in connector would bring.

Apple obviously think the benefits of switching are not significant enough.

But Apple switched from Magsafe to USBC and not many people seemed to care about that...

Well I for one hope lightning stays. It's physically a WAY superior connector to USB-C. Much easier to connect, thinner, much more robust and does what it needs to do. Granted I too would hope they upgrade to UsB3 in the phone, but that should be possible with lightning as well.

And since we are no way near a situation where lightning is obsolete why go through all the trouble with incompability with you ipad/airpod charging solution/cable?
