Apple has always been a luxury brand, good grief, the price of lowest end hardware from the 1980s was what, $6000K in today's money; also catering to the upper middle is a recent, post 2004 phenomena (early Ipods were very expensive if you consider inflation).
Apple IIe, introduced January 1983 at $1395

https://apple2history.org/appendix/ahb/ahb3/

Using the "Inflation calculator" at:

http://www.in2013dollars.com/1983-dollars-in-2014?amount=1395

Means in today's money Apples "lowest end hardware from the 1980s" would cost $3,315.73, just over half what you thought (guessed?) it would cost.

I'm eager to see what size display this phone will have, and what kind of aspect ratio. Will they go the same route as Samsung and LG and make it super tall 18.5:9 or keep with the more sensible 16:9?

For some reason I feel like Apple will not keep with the times.

Only a few phones on the market have 18:9 screens... and you think it's suddenly the new normal? :)

Nope, that doesn't answer my question.

I asked what the op meant by "Usually never", not what the words mean individually.

Nice try though.
Thanks! Just here to help buddy! Now back to the iPhone 8 discussion.

Thankfully we only have a few weeks to go to finally know what the mystery is all about. If I had to make a bet. I would say it will be face Id all the way.

Yep! Maybe I'm OCD but the angular cutout at the top is quite annoying. Maybe if it's curved it would look better?

You will likely have just signal strength and battery percentage displayed on either side of the cutout with a completely black background behind them. Despite the mockups showing a full-screen background image, I think the top area will remain black at all times and you won't see the cutout unless you look closely.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was deliberate. Samsung moved up the launch of the Note 8 to steal some thunder from the iPhone 8.

you guys are paranoid:

Smartphone Name Release date
Galaxy Note September 2011
Galaxy Note 2 August 29, 2012
Galaxy Note 3 September 25, 2013
Galaxy Note 4 October 17, 2014
Galaxy Note 5 August 21, 2015
Galaxy Note 7 August 2, 2016
Galaxy Note 8 August 23, 2017

Ugh, RIP TouchID. Just as I paid extra for a laptop that has it XD (I know they won't suddenly deactivate existing ones, it just kind of sucks when technology you just paid an extra bunch of money for is deprecated a few months later)
Guessing my next iPhone will be a 7 in a couple of years, then reassess the Android situation.

I wonder how facial detection will work (if at all) in low light situations. I can't see how it would be much use.

I’d imagine as it’s supposed be an IR sensor doing it, it’ll work perfectly in zero light, just like all the other devices that use it: windows hello on the surface pro is instant for example, even in the dark. That said, it’s still a crap alternative to Touch ID.

We currently have the top bar overlaid on the home screen and lock screen background - no way will it be a black bar unless specified by the app Dev...

Which brings us to what will happen in the space in an app... function area?

If this works anywhere near as quickly as the current fingerprint sensor. I'm all on-board.

Then implement this into Macs also and no need for putting a fingerprint sensor on a keyboard.
Make it to where I can use facial recognition as password replacement as well when installing apps too please.

This is where I'm thinking they are headed. Just think about sitting at your desk and your Mac pre authenticates before you even touch the keyboard, sounds really great to me.

Can't see this being a hit with muslim women.

Most likely will just use their eyes lol, but what you said was still funny to think about:)

The AuthenTec guys continued to work on their product at Apple.

Technically when the company was bought they became Apple guys developing stuff inside Apple rather than AuthenTec guys working inside Apple.

Same with my wife, we just bought her a 7 Plus this weekend. She had multiple problems with her 6 Plus and really just wanted something that was the same as what she had. Not real sure what I was expecting but I was kind of disappointed in how similar the 7 Plus was to her 6 Plus.

some units of iPhone 6 Plus have unresponsive touch screen or affected by Touch Disease! It's an engineering design flaw since the Touch IC is located in the motherboard. The design has been corrected by Apple in the iPhone 6S Plus.

I'm sure Apple will of thought about this along with a million other events! Also it's Face ID so it wouldn't necessarily need to read your eyes!

Probably so, but some of us also wear hats, winter or rain gear, etc. There are also numerous scenarios where you want to open your device while not looking directly at it. Facial recognition might be a good approach for some, but it absolutely wouldn't work for many of us.

You don't know what Apple have planned, lets not forget they will have been working on it for years. This always happens every time they introduce a new technology people get all worked up, complain, Apple get on stage announce it, people realise it's not as bad as they were thinking and then pre-order the phone, then the cycle starts all over again.

... I usually never upgrade my iPhone on "s" years. I will make an exception this year. Love the new design. I doubt it will be called the iPhone 8.
Why? Because 8 is a lucky number and millions of Chinese will buy it just for that. Tim Cook won't miss this opportunity. The name is all but guaranteed.

That would be quite backward thinking if people have to enter password to use Apple Pay. It's actually quite unsafe since you're in line at grocery stores people will see your password and rob your phone minutes later.
Yes, like the millions of people that get robbed every day after they use chip&pin or contactless ;)
