My wife needed a new phone. She doesn't care about latest and greatest. We got her a 7 this weekend.

Same with my wife, we just bought her a 7 Plus this weekend. She had multiple problems with her 6 Plus and really just wanted something that was the same as what she had. Not real sure what I was expecting but I was kind of disappointed in how similar the 7 Plus was to her 6 Plus.

I'm in the same boat. I'll wait to see if TouchID makes its way back on the next years phone. And see just how well FaceID (or whatever it'll be called) works in real world situations. I'm really skeptical of how silly people will look trying to authenticate facial recognition with a NFC terminal.
$20 says it’ll have both forms of ID.

I may be in the minority but I am excited to see a Face ID only iPhone. If Apple has the courage to add a new Facial Recognition system onto the iPhone X/Pro and are willing to sacrifice Touch ID, one of their most popular features to date, then I feel that this will be a groundbreaking innovation for Apple and the Security industry. I look forward to innovation and to those worried about compatibility in a dark environment, I would not worry as Apple would have tackled that problem around the beginning of development of Face ID.

Apple have not revealed the phone nor have they said Touch ID is gone. Stop making bullish comments bout something Apple has not done.
I was being sarcastic.

Then use a PIN

Apple Pay is about speed with Touch ID. Look up the demo video and every single thing Apple has said about Apple Pay.

What would happen if outside in the sun and I'm wearing sunglasses? Do I have to take my sunglasses off to allow my phone to scan my face to open?

Ah, the Southerner version, of Northerners asking if they had to remove their gloves for TouchId :D

The usual answer is, it depends on how dark or reflective they are. Most facial recognition software likes to know details like the distance between your eyes.

However, if you add a version of yourself with sunglasses to the recognition training (like adding another fingerprint), then you're probably okay.

Interestingly, facial hair, beards and moustaches don't usually cause a big problem. However, if you had long hair and it fell across your face, obviously that would be a problem.

It should be passcode based at the very least. I still haven't given up on the notion of Touch ID under the screen, on the power button, or on the back.
Please God do not put the touch sensor on the back of the phone. I used the Samsung S8 and it was the worst because of that single design "flaw", IMO.

I say it still has Touch ID on the bottom face of the device. It won't be the entire face, just the bottom of course.
I hope you're right but I doubt it. The way Apple wants to be a luxury brand these days I can see them thinking "You know, if a person can afford $1200 for a phone, then surely an Apple Watch as an ApplePay accessory isn't too much to ask".

TouchID is not going away. How are you going to use Apple Pay without TouchID?
OK this is from Apple themselves:

I seriously hope the Face detection will be as fast, fluid and secure as the Touch ID, so it wont be a step back...

If devs could confirm Touch ID in the iPhone 8, that would be great.

Better on the back than no Touch ID at all.

It should. Samsung already has a capable Iris scanner as well. I would expect nothing less from a rival tech giant. Plus, Apple is about refining concepts before implementing them than being aggressive world beaters.

I have an Apple Watch but never use it for Apple Pay. It requires two hands to use Apple Pay with a watch and only one to use it with a phone. If I am carrying anything then I have to put it down to use Apple Pay with my watch where as I don't have to do that with my phone.

Starting to think this is why they released the VR/AR kit before this since they may use it's dead reckoning and depth gauge features to authenticate that it is a real face against a 3D model requiring some motion or facial gesture like a smile to assure it is not looking at a photo. perhaps asking you to tilt or nod your head to reinforce it's 3D model.

Actually it's a screen shot from everythingapplepro video

Here is the video :-

No Touch ID at all hurts the simplicity of avoiding the Pin for Apple Pay and also unlocking the phone without scanning your face or eyes. Apple Watch 3 better include a circular design option for people.

This is the company they bought, this is the product that will be implemented.

Should be even faster since they had time to refine the iPhone modules and software, right?

That would be quite backward thinking if people have to enter password to use Apple Pay. It's actually quite unsafe since you're in line at grocery stores people will see your password and rob your phone minutes later.
