Personally, if there is only face detection and no Touch ID on the new phone I plan to hold on to my 7 Plus another year. No interest in swiping my face for Apple Pay.
If this new phone turns out to have a smaller usuable screen than my 7 plus, than I won't get it.
I'll either keep the 7 plus for another year or go for the Note 8.
I'm really skeptical of how silly people will look trying to authenticate facial recognition with a NFC terminal.
I hope you're right. I would hope Apple has considered this and implements it the correct way.IF facial can be used for Apple Pay, it'll no doubt pre-authenticate when it sees who you are.
So I would guess no need to stay in front of it while actually paying.
Infrared and visible light are not the same thing. It shouldn’t matter.I wonder how facial detection will work (if at all) in low light situations. I can't see how it would be much use.
We'll see what happens, I just hope its not small like the 4.7", I can't go back to small screen phones anymore!I think the mockups and rumors suggest the "8" would have just as much screen real estate as the 7+. If you take away the status bar then I guess it would be marginally smaller, yes. Depending on if TouchID goes away or stays, there is also speculation that there could be some dedicated space at the bottom for TouchID, although that is yet to be revealed, obviously. I think that part is going to be kept hidden until the official reveal, or maybe a few days before it could be leaked. That is really the deciding factor for me - TouchID and if/how it is implemented into the iPhone "8".
So, it’s confirmed. This is the new iPhone design! Not that exciting![]()
I wouldn't be surprised if this was deliberate. Samsung moved up the launch of the Note 8 to steal some thunder from the iPhone 8.“Double down on secrecy” - Tim Cook

Indeed. Strategic leaks are probably an important part of marketing.I wouldn't be surprised if this was deliberate. Samsung moved up the launch of the Note 8 to steal some thunder from the iPhone 8.
Seems like it'd be easier to "compel" someone to unlock their device with FaceID than with a passcode or TouchID. Like, "Oops... did I just point the sensor at your face and unlock the phone?? Oh how handy..."
Not a fan. Prankster friends could have a field day with this.
Or police holding your phone to your face to unlock your device. I believe it was (in the U.S.) deemed unlawful for police to force someone to unlock their phone with a passcode without a warrant. Not sure how that works with facial recognition and/or fingerprints....or ANY biometrics, for that matter. But it seems much easier to "accidentally" wave the phone in front of the users face. Especially with how quickly these technologies work now.Seems like it'd be easier to "compel" someone to unlock their device with FaceID than with a passcode or TouchID. Like, "Oops... did I just point the sensor at your face and unlock the phone?? Oh how handy..."

I was actually wondering when someone would use that argument.Seems like it'd be easier to "compel" someone to unlock their device with FaceID than with a passcode or TouchID. Like, "Oops... did I just point the sensor at your face and unlock the phone?? Oh how handy..."
